This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Designed, manufactured, and installed by Psagot Playgrounds for the Rosh HaAyin Municipality, this playground is especially accessible; including a giant central integrated play system, as well as numerous other playground equipment. The central play system is specially adapted for independent play for those using wheelchairs and includes an entrance ramp and sloping bridges that are 2 stories high and 48 meters long(!!). These bridges are suitable for independent play for wheelchair-bound children, and special handrails are installed along with all the panels. In addition, in the panels along the bridges there are various game boards and musical instruments; all suitable for playing from a wheelchair. A Braille writing game greets those entering the structure and accompanies the players along their way. Because the playground is meant to integrate children of all abilities, children who are not in wheelchairs have additional and varied bridges for crawling and walking; and at the bottom of the play system is a huge cable network that can be climbed to the second floor. Combined in the panels and roofs are colored stained glass panels for games of light and shadow and color, and all the colors of the fixtures and rubber in the infrastructure were selected in consultation with an accessibility specialist and a specialist in visual impairments. What else is in the playground? * A wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round that is suitable for 2 chairs simultaneously, along with additional players. * An accessible globe spinner * A seesaw that enables easy transfer to and from a wheelchair * A special swing for wheelchairs * Accessible swings of 2 other types * Outdoor musical instruments for playing actual songs; a xylophone, a musical flower, drums and more * Flower talk tubes transmit sounds between two flowers on different sides of the playground * Accessible hammocks * Accessible spring disc * A panel for taking souvenir photographs And many other game panels for developing the mind and hand muscles. Biography This is the City of Boston’s first universally accessible playground and is located at the Charlestown Navy Yard. The project includes a new, 23,000 square foot boardwalk and 63 pieces of play equipment contained in a 15,000 square foot rubber playground area, complete with ADA accessible paths and gathering spaces. The park also includes benches, tables, trash receptacles, bike racks, fence/rail systems, signage and lighting, and connection to the Harborwalk liner path system. More than 400 granite blocks were used for construction, some sourced from the original seawall on site. Timbers used for seating were once intended for use for mast during Drydock 5’s shipbuilding era.

Biography The Playground was built by thousands of volunteers over a five day period. The playground features a bigger than life 40 foot long Shiver Me Timbers Pirate Ship. It’s right next to the Eagle’s Nest, a huge climbing structure. This two storied ship features a climbing cargo net, portals, decking and ramps. Notes McCormick Park contains Currents Aquatic Center, a state-of-the-art indoor aquatic facility, Silver’s Lagoon, a wheelchair-accessible children’s fishing pond, baseball diamonds, and MoBASH Skate Park. A rubberized surface enables children and adults alike to navigate the area, and wide spaces between structures and grassy areas surrounding the playground enables children to retreat. Notes Details George R. Sims, one of New Port Richey’s earliest promoters, donated Sims Park (then named Enchantment Park) to the City in 1924. He died in 1954, and in accordance with his instructions, he was buried about 50 feet from Orange Lake without a tombstone – just a redbud tree to mark the spot. (However, his remains were moved to a cemetery some years later.) Sims Park is protected by New Port Richey’s very first ordinance, and because of Ordinance One, Sims Park will remain the people’s park forever. Dogs are welcome in Sims Park and around Orange Lake on a leash. More history can be found here. Biography Sky’s the Limit is the first public playground built in Chester County that meets the ADA guidelines for 100 percent accessibility. Care was taken to insure that children and adults with disabilities of all kinds would be able to fully enjoy the playground together. Special equipment blends into the standard equipment so that all children can play side-by-side regardless of physical or developmental disabilities. Some of the special features of Sky’s the Limit are smooth, shock-absorbent safety flooring, ramped play structures, wheelchair transfer stations, abundant ground-level play opportunities, auditory play panels, Braille, and special-needs swings. All of the traditional climbing, swinging, and rocking activities are also provided. The playground is completely fenced and includes many benches surrounding the area. It is close to a picnic pavilion and drinking fountain, and a short walk from bathrooms that are open seasonally. Sky’s the Limit is located in Kerr Park in the Borough of Downingtown. The closest intersection to the playground is Pennsylvania Avenue and Wallace Avenue. The parking area can be accessed from Wallace Avenue, down the driveway next to the Downingtown Area School District Administration buildings.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. Children ages 5-12 can enjoy climbing walls, zip lines, a ten-tire bouncer, tire swings, a fish music wall and much more. Through a cooperative project between the Maryland Department of Environment, Maryland Environmental Service, and DNR, funding was made available for the construction of a community built tire playground at Smallwood. In a four day period, a playground with the theme of fish and history was created. The playground entrance features art murals by Mattawoman Creek Art Center artists Bob Kenyon and Gene McCandless, and the fishing theme can be seen throughout the playground as over 65 hand-painted fish dot every piece of equipment. More than half of the structures are accessible to children with disabilities.

Smith’s beautiful, 16,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – , wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment. In addition to the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, the 6 1/2 acre Playground has more than fifty pieces of state-of-the-art play equipment for children 10 and younger and includes a Tot-Lot just for children 5 and younger. Biography We have included this playground because there is a fence, a spray park, adapted swing seat, and good surfacing. For many children, this is makes it accessible and inclusive. For others, they may need more adaptations. There are two main play structures, one standard one for younger children and one for larger with several slides, several kinds of climbing walls, a rope wall, monkey bars, suspended “mushrooms”, and two kinds of spinners: one standing and one hanging. There are several swings including infant and adapted swing seat. There’s a balance beam as well. The playground also includes a small football-themed spray ground, fenced from the main playground.
