This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The City of Stow, in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of Stow-Munroe Falls, began a fundraising campaign in 2007 to fund the building of a special needs playground. Donations from individuals and businesses in the community, along with funding from the City of Stow, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Kiwanis Foundation, CVS and Tallmadge Asphalt and Paving Company, allowed the project to move forward with construction. SOAR Playground opened for play in August 2008. SOAR Playground is fully accessible to all children, including those with physical or developmental disabilities, and provides an avenue for children of all abilities to play together. A special needs playground is an integrated play area that is specifically designed to insure that children of all abilities are able to play in a safe area created to meet their special needs. The playground includes a variety of stimulating opportunities for self-directed, challenging and independent play. SOAR Playground is located next to an existing playground at Silver Springs Park, allowing whole families to experience a truly barrier-free play environment. The addition of SOAR to the Stow Parks system allows children of all abilities to play, explore, and imagine with their friends and families.

Notes Called the “Gateway to the Bronx River,” Soundview Park is situated where the Bronx River opens into the East River. When the City of New York acquired the original 93 acres of land for this park in 1937, the entire area was composed of marshland. For a good chunk of its history, Soundview Park was a partially developed park built on a landfill. The southern third was once open water, while the remaining 2/3 of the park was tidal marsh, complete with three streams. Landfill operations began in the 1920s and lasted forty years. The landfill increased the height of the shoreline up to 30 feet above the marsh elevation, decreasing public access to the water. Happily, the park is now revered for its sports fields, fishing, and gorgeous views across Hunts Point to Manhattan. Today, the 205-acre park offers six grass baseball fields, a cricket pitch, a running track, a soccer field, six basketball courts, six handball courts, a running track with synthetic turf field, walking/biking paths and a new performance lawn. Biography The small playground includes wheelchair-accessible ramps and platforms wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass one another. They also have specialized swings designed for different age groups as well as handlebars at the slides and climbing walls. Wheelchair-accessible facilities also include the Basketball and Sand Volleyball Courts, the Wave Pool, the Horse Show Ring, and the Picnic Complex.

Three distinct age appropriate play areas have been designed to include a rubber surfaced play area for infants under the age of 2, a tot lot for pre-school age children (2-5 year olds), and an adventure play area for school age children (5-12 year olds). Unique play features are included in the design to create a sensory enriched accessible playground. Such unique play elements in the play areas include an adventure play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a tot lot play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a merry-go-around, swings, spring riders, group rocking units, self propelled spin play units, independent climbing apparatuses and play units with sound features. Brightly colored protective rubber play surfacing in shapes of different planets also add to the space theme. One focal point in the accessible playground is the decorative central seating area with seat walls and a colored sun pattern in the concrete paving which further enhance the solar galaxy theme. A 10-foot wide concrete walkway borders the entire accessible playground site and provides two entries into the accessible playground from 6th Street. This pathway can support persons in wheelchairs and pedestrians. Pathways have various colors and textures to again stimulate different senses. Additional security is provided by a 3-foot high decorative wall and ornamental metal fence that secures the west portion of the accessible playground by eliminating direct access from the playground to the adjacent street. Other amenities in the accessible playground include an art sculpture, raised planters, therapeutic gardens with various textured and scented plants, picnic tables, benches, trash receptacles, a drinking fountain, bike racks, flowering shrubs and groundcovers.

Notes Southwind Park is a National Model Park. The unique 80 acre state-of-the-art park serves as a national model by providing a new dimension of inclusion for all people, “without boundaries.” It has gone beyond full compliance of the American Disabilities Act, with a special emphasis and attention given to individuals with physical and cognitive needs. Biography The park includes: Three completely accessible fishing piers on the lake allow anglers to try their luck at catching bluegill, bass and catfish. One of the city’s largest playgrounds is barrier-free and includes accessible swings and outdoor musical instruments. For safety and comfort, there is pour-in play surface. This 8-acre grassy area is ideal for kite flying, Frisbee and just hanging out with friends and family. Five picnic shelters, equipped with ceiling fans and electric outlets, are scattered throughout the park. A large familiy picnic shelter is located near the great lawn and sports courts. The Enabling Garden has raised planters for seated gardening. The Tranquility Garden, for persons with Alzheimer’s or dementia, has seating areas and a grove of white birches. The Fragrant Garden features a waterfall and sensory plants in easy reach. The Children’s Garden includes a vegetable garden, native plant area, bird attracting garden and many different paths and whimsical items. The Butterfly Garden has interpretive signage, seating and a water feature. Navigating the park is easy with a 2 1/2 mile concrete trail that has built-in directional guides and a color-coded wayfinding system for individuals with cognitive disabilities. The park’s exclusively designed tram is accessible and carries up to 8 people, providing either a complete tour or a ride to a specific park location. a barrier-free tree house/nature observatory

Biography The Danville Swimming Pool at Garfield Park is home to – The Sprayground for Everyone. It is a zero-depth water-play area accessible to all people, regardless of their abilities. So many children have enjoyed the water features at the AMBUCS Playground for Everyone AMBUCS thought they would try to create an entirely water based playground. It also seemed like a good way to assist the City of Danville with the pool. As with the Playground for Everyone, this playground is designed around enabling disabled children to play in the water – not just roll up and sit in it.
