This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground manufactured by Landscape Structures. The playgrounds meet First 5 LA’s goals of developing new tot parks, improving existing parks and making them safe for children under the age of 5, and equipping neighborhood parks with specialized play equipment for children with special needs. The Department of Recreation and Parks and the Exceptional Children’s Foundation also collaborated on the playground at Ritchie Valens Park. This playground has many musical elements that are sure to make everyone smile. Children love the four-sided “On Stage/Jukebox/ Recording Studio” feature as well as a piece that children can enter and pretend to be tending a radio station. Turntables, levers, switches and the like keep a child’s attention for quite some time. Biography Located right on the lake, this huge Ajax park is a great place to spend the day. It has two unique play structures — one for big kids and one for preschoolers. Both are fully accessible, and so is the large splash pad. The park also boasts a pavilion with washrooms and a concession stand. There are tables and chairs for picnics, big trees that provide shady spots and plenty of green space for burning off energy.

Biography The Sensory Garden Playground is a combination of sensory-integrated playground equipment and amenities along with gardening areas. The 40-acre facility is being developed in four phases. Phase I opened spring 2015. The playground is located in Danada South Park. Accessible, portable washrooms are available onsite for your convenience. Phase I Thanks to the gracious support of donors, Phase I of the Sensory Garden Playground project is complete and opened in spring 2015. Phase I includes the following: 2-5-Year-Old Playground Area Fragrance Garden Paved Pathways Sound Garden Sensory Garden Playground Project Phases II-IV will be completed as funding is secured. These phases will include: 5-12 Year Old Playground Area Art Along the Way (sculptures to be installed Summer 2016) Art Along the Way is a component of the Sensory Garden Playground that will encourage appreciation for art and recreation/play, inspire a spirit of inclusion and imagination for all ages and abilities, as well as foster a welcoming and playful entrance environment for visitors to engage with during their visit. Biography The playground features two brightly colored, large climbing structures, swings, a sand table and a zip line, all of which can be accessed by kids of any ability. Centered between the pool and the baseball field at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, the sprawling play area is not fully enclosed, but it is surrounded by walking paths and plenty of grass, providing a safety net for those tots that tend to be runners. Travel and adventure is the theme of the new playground. The smaller of the two play structures is designed to look like a whimsical train. The rubber padded play-space is for the younger set, featuring tunnels, slides and low climbing walls at each train section, all connected by bridges. The larger play area resembles an airport tower, complete with an orange windsock fluttering from the top. A modern merry-go-round, a tall curved slide, a rope web, monkey bars and, a perenial playground favorite roller slide offer plenty to explore, but the real gem of this spot is the zip line. The second zip line features an accessible seat with a safety bar, so that anyone can enjoy the thrill of the ride. Biography This is the City of Boston’s first universally accessible playground and is located at the Charlestown Navy Yard. The project includes a new, 23,000 square foot boardwalk and 63 pieces of play equipment contained in a 15,000 square foot rubber playground area, complete with ADA accessible paths and gathering spaces. The park also includes benches, tables, trash receptacles, bike racks, fence/rail systems, signage and lighting, and connection to the Harborwalk liner path system. More than 400 granite blocks were used for construction, some sourced from the original seawall on site. Timbers used for seating were once intended for use for mast during Drydock 5’s shipbuilding era.

Biography The Playground was built by thousands of volunteers over a five day period. The playground features a bigger than life 40 foot long Shiver Me Timbers Pirate Ship. It’s right next to the Eagle’s Nest, a huge climbing structure. This two storied ship features a climbing cargo net, portals, decking and ramps. Children in the school helped design the playground which is a Landscape Structures and Habitat Systems Playground. Biography Sky’s the Limit is the first public playground built in Chester County that meets the ADA guidelines for 100 percent accessibility. Care was taken to insure that children and adults with disabilities of all kinds would be able to fully enjoy the playground together. Special equipment blends into the standard equipment so that all children can play side-by-side regardless of physical or developmental disabilities. Some of the special features of Sky’s the Limit are smooth, shock-absorbent safety flooring, ramped play structures, wheelchair transfer stations, abundant ground-level play opportunities, auditory play panels, Braille, and special-needs swings. All of the traditional climbing, swinging, and rocking activities are also provided. The playground is completely fenced and includes many benches surrounding the area. It is close to a picnic pavilion and drinking fountain, and a short walk from bathrooms that are open seasonally. Sky’s the Limit is located in Kerr Park in the Borough of Downingtown. The closest intersection to the playground is Pennsylvania Avenue and Wallace Avenue. The parking area can be accessed from Wallace Avenue, down the driveway next to the Downingtown Area School District Administration buildings.

Smith’s beautiful, 16,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – , wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment. In addition to the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, the 6 1/2 acre Playground has more than fifty pieces of state-of-the-art play equipment for children 10 and younger and includes a Tot-Lot just for children 5 and younger. Biography We have included this playground because there is a fence, a spray park, adapted swing seat, and good surfacing. For many children, this is makes it accessible and inclusive. For others, they may need more adaptations. There are two main play structures, one standard one for younger children and one for larger with several slides, several kinds of climbing walls, a rope wall, monkey bars, suspended “mushrooms”, and two kinds of spinners: one standing and one hanging. There are several swings including infant and adapted swing seat. There’s a balance beam as well. The playground also includes a small football-themed spray ground, fenced from the main playground. Three distinct age appropriate play areas have been designed to include a rubber surfaced play area for infants under the age of 2, a tot lot for pre-school age children (2-5 year olds), and an adventure play area for school age children (5-12 year olds). Unique play features are included in the design to create a sensory enriched accessible playground. Such unique play elements in the play areas include an adventure play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a tot lot play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a merry-go-around, swings, spring riders, group rocking units, self propelled spin play units, independent climbing apparatuses and play units with sound features. Brightly colored protective rubber play surfacing in shapes of different planets also add to the space theme. One focal point in the accessible playground is the decorative central seating area with seat walls and a colored sun pattern in the concrete paving which further enhance the solar galaxy theme. A 10-foot wide concrete walkway borders the entire accessible playground site and provides two entries into the accessible playground from 6th Street. This pathway can support persons in wheelchairs and pedestrians. Pathways have various colors and textures to again stimulate different senses. Additional security is provided by a 3-foot high decorative wall and ornamental metal fence that secures the west portion of the accessible playground by eliminating direct access from the playground to the adjacent street. Other amenities in the accessible playground include an art sculpture, raised planters, therapeutic gardens with various textured and scented plants, picnic tables, benches, trash receptacles, a drinking fountain, bike racks, flowering shrubs and groundcovers.

Notes Features: Large Climbing Structure 2 Ramps Slide Rock Wall Ladder Bridge Dinosaur Climber 4 Seater Wobbler 2 Bowl Spinners 2 Swings 2 Infant Swings Biography St. Andrews Heights Playground features a large climbing structure with a slide, ramps, a rock wall, and a ladder bridge. There is a dinosaur climber, a 4 seater wobbler, and 2 bowl spinners. There are 4 swings, two of which are infant swings. The recycled tire flooring allows accessibility right up into the play and in a few places, you can go under and through. There are two ramps to the first level of the play structure so you can ride around in a loop. The swings and bowl spinners are great for kids who benefit from vestibular motion. Although this is a community playground, it is next to a school and will be used by the children at the school during recess and lunch. The park area is fenced but has a couple of ungated exits. There is some shade offered at the playground by a few large trees. There are 4 benches and a picnic table to provide seating.
