This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Beilenson Park on Monday, June 9, 2008. The accessible playground at Beilenson Park has two separate play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and two sections for five to twelve-year-olds. All of the areas have a “Maritime” theme and feature swings, ladders, a variety of balancing elements, climbers and slides. Special features to the 19,600-square-foot playground is an interactive drum play area and sensory wall. Other elements include spring toys, crawl tunnels, landscaping and drinking fountains. Enjoy the new 19,600-square-foot addition to a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility in the San Fernando Valley – Lake Balboa. Included in the design is a lighthouse-themedLandscape Structures PlayBooster® playstructure, as well as other themed components throughout. A Sway Fun® glider, swings, climbers and slides offer lots of sensory experiences. The playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography The Marina at Mercer County Park has been selected as the winner of the 2007-2008 Excellence in Design Award by the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association. The area includes the newly constructed “Lakeside Village.” Among the improvements made were the creation of a 10,500-square-foot “barrier-free” playground; paddleboat refurbishments; installation of three permanent pavilions; improved trail connections; extensive seating; new landscaping, water fountains and lighting; redevelopment of boat launch to accommodate canoes, sailboats and kayaks; purchase of 18-person pontoon boat for nature tours and group rentals. From NJ Playgrounds, “The playground is big with two main play sets, one for kids 2-5yrs, and another for 5 – 12yrs. In between is a swing set with 2 baby swings, 2 standard swings, and 1 (there used to be 2) of the chair type swings with a 5-point harness. Everyone love the chair swing as you can be pushed so high that it is scary (fun scary). Relative to the other facilities the swings are in short supply so there is usually a waiting line. This signature playground design mimics a freeway, overpass and common traffic signals found in the city. Notes Legacy Commons is a community gathering area adjacent to the Memorial Park Promenade. While the Promenade encourages people to walk between Downtown Rapid City and the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Legacy Commons offers a destination for more community members and visitors to stay and enjoy Memorial Park. In keeping with the Remembrance and Renewal theme of the 2012 40th anniversary of the 1972 flood, Legacy Commons has features to help remember the flood while offering new features for current and future generations. Remembrance features include a coordinated look at existing memorials, and includes moving the war memorial from its current location to a prominent place adjacent to the Promenade and adding a spray jet fountain in the pond that resembles the smaller spray in the existing flood memorial. The renewal features in Legacy Commons include five separate play areas with adjacent themed gardens Climber area with art garden Accessible inclusive play area with an elevated accessible garden Nature climbing area with adjacent Black Hills, prairie and medicinal gardens Age 2-5 play area with a children’s garden Active play area with an adjacent sustainable landscape. The play areas and gardens surround a three-fourths acre Great Lawn for spontaneous and planned gatherings. Discovery features within Legacy Commons include 70 images of plants, animals and fossils hidden throughout the park, and, for the parents, ample benches to relax, or three separate fitness features to work out. The existing hillside amphitheater features a new at-grade concrete stage/platform for events as well as a comtemplative area next to Rapid Creek. All bike path connections and through routes remain. The restroom interiors at the existing bandshell will be remodeled to accessibility standards. All children can have fun in the inclusive play area that includes a Sensory Play Center®, Sway Fun® Glider and accessible sensory garden. In the natural play area, kids discover a mix of nature-inspired components, including custom rock outcrops typical of those found in the Black Hills. LATCP is dedicated to improving the lives and dignity of all children by developing accessible playgrounds and inclusive recreation programs allowing children with disabilities the opportunity to experience play, side-by-side, with their able-bodied peers. David Weingarten, Vice-Chair of LATCP was introduced to the organization that spent years researching, developing and designing Israel’s first accessible playground, which opened in Ra’anana, Israel in 2005. Michael Alon, Chairman and Founder of LATCP, worked on the Ra’anana playground paired up with Weingarten to establish the organization as a 501 c 3 in 2006. Michael Alon and David Weingarten worked together to build the organization to what it is today. Collaborating with government officials, organizations, civic groups and parents they established a mission to create a similar playground in Nassau County. Notes Features: Interactive Maze Accessible Slides Accessible Swings Water Play Two “Tree Houses” Biography This 10,000-square-foot playground’s colorful zoo and carousel theme draws on historic community landmarks, enchanting adults and children. Little ones can travel through a fun-filled, interactive maze while school-age kids slide, swing, and play with the animal artistry. Two zoo animals guard the entrance…ready to spray water at the touch of a button. For the more adventuresome, two “tree houses” provide hours of mystery and intrigue. The playground was made possible through the combined efforts of Councilmember Ed Reyes, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, and Shane’s Inspiration. The equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography The playground which opened in 2014 is located at Memorial Park, the site of the 9-11 Garden of Reflection on Woodside Road. The playground is just to the left of the bathrooms and picnic pavilion. From the article announcing the playground, “The most exciting part of this playground will be the rubberized surface that will be easily accessible for children in wheelchairs or children that may have difficulty walking. It will be laid out with a wonderful design of vines and leaves keeping with the ‘Secret Garden’ theme,” said Huchler-Smith. “A huge Sequoia Log that can be climbed on, rolled through, run through, or just sat in is a perfect example of children of all abilities being able to use the same piece of equipment alongside each other,” said Huchler-Smith. “Activity panels will be used by all to increase eye hand coordination and make sounds with the Merry Musical section,” she continued. One of the playground pieces, the Rock N Raft, will be accessible by wheelchair and then others can join in on the raft and glide back and forth, she said. “Of course there will be swings and various climbing structures,” said Huchler-Smith. “We tried to have most of the pieces with the garden theme – Mushroom table, Dragonfly seesaw, etc.”

Biography The playground is adjacent to Abilities United and close to the Mitchell Park Library. With seven zones specifically designed to accommodate the needs of all kinds of children, everyone will feel safe and included. The zones include: A music zone which includes: The 24-string laser harp in the Music Zone, created by artist Jen Lewin. When a user breaks one of the laser beams, the harp creates a sounds based on how quickly the person was moving and on the height of their hand (or wheelchair). The pleasing sounds of the laser harp are magical whether one or 50 are playing on it! A Swinging Zone includes accessible swing seats and bird nest swings. A Spinning zone includes a wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, a Cozy Cocoon, a rope climber that spins and other pieces. A Tot Zone A Pretend Play Zone includes a stage and treehouse A Sliding Zone which is a grassy hill with many different ways to get up to the top and many ways to slide back down. Some other the features include: A 2-story fully wheelchair-accessible playhouse and small theater; A kid-friendly stage, complete with costumes to get imaginations going; A magical treewalk that takes visitors through the trees as never before; Retreat areas throughout the playground for children with autism that get over-stimulated by traditional park experiences; Socially inclusive playground zones, specifically designed to make the park easy to navigate; Interactive music experiences to excite all musical interests and abilities; A “Kindness Corner” to ensure that our kids know that bullying has no place here, and will serve as a powerful reminder to be kind to those around us. Biography Located off Snow Road in Marshfield Center. The playground is 10,000 sq feet, and has 16 slides, a rock climbing wall, and full access for all children. The playground also incorporates representations of historic town spots, such as the Winslow House and the Marshfield Hills General Store, owned by actor Steve Carell, into the design. Kids at Play in Marshfield is a huge, flat, soft, safe and popular spot with 16 slides, a rock wall, and cute play houses that rise up out of the asphalt of Liberty Plaza. More of a tot spot than for kids looking for thrills or challenges. However, it’s a workout keeping track of your child as there are lots of hidden spots. It’s fully accessible and environmentally sustainable. A big source of pride for the residents who made it happen. Unfortunately, it has no shade except what is created by the huge structure,
