This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography One of the three accessible playgrounds built in honor of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. This one is located at Celebration Plaza. Themed “Nature Play, Play with Nature,” the new playground touches on Whistler’s resort history, outdoor recreation culture and 2010 Winter Games competition environments. The inclusive playground features a wooden play house for children aged up to six years old, and a tree house play structure for those aged seven to 12 years old. Both have weather protection to offer 12 months of safe and sheltered play. Key design features of the Whistler accessible playground include a multi-sensory wall, which takes its inspiration from the skyline of the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, and a large, accessible tree house inspired by the region’s forests. Other elements include a rope climber similar to the existing rope climber, swings, slide, rubberized surfacing and other equipment. Seating integrated into the design allows parents and kids to sit comfortably, gaze at the mountain views and take it all in. From a parent, “There is a large Treehouse structure with a slide, a smaller toddler treehouse with a smaller slide, a rocking boat, swinging discs, a water play area, padded play surfaces, and swings (no infant swings, though). There are restrooms, dining, and shopping all right there.” See more pictures

Biography Our generous community raised nearly $400,000 to build our Inclusive Playground named “Sue-Ville.” We opened in June, 2019 and the playground has been very popular ever since. The playground is on the site of Osceola Medical Center just south of town. We are open 24/7, the playground is gated, and adult supervision is required. There are no public bathrooms, although visitors are welcome to come into Osceola Medical Center or Wild River Fitness during regular business hours to use our public restrooms. Sue-Ville has many features designed for all abilities so that all kids can have fun on our site. We installed a high-tech artificial turf that is padded and safe. There are benches and picnic tables on site. Our playground is part of our larger health campus that includes other activities and venues that allow for kids of all ages, parents, and grandparents to have fun together. The Jeff Meyer Fitness Trail is one of the best outdoor fitness trails in our area, with more than a dozen exercise stations spread around a 1/2 mile walking and jogging loop. The Royal Credit Union Sport Court is multi-functional, providing visitors with access to all racket sports, basketball, volleyball, and other uses. Wild River Fitness is a full-purpose health fitness facility available to members with extensive free weights, exercise machines, childcare, and a variety of fitness classes for all abilities. We are still raising final funding to complete Sue-Ville and add more features to our wonderful new community asset.

Biography The Landscape Structures playground opened in June 2015 The Oshkosh Inclusive Park Project is a community effort, made possible through a partnership of individuals, businesses, and the city of Oshkosh. The mission of the Oshkosh Inclusive Park Project is to create a safe and accessible outdoor recreational environment for individuals of all abilities and ages. The park includes a completely accessible play area with a rubberized ground surface and safety fence. The project includes accessible playground equipment, shade canopies, accessibility ramps and a poured-in-place rubber surface that makes it easier for residents of all ages to access the playground. Equipment is wide enough to allow children in wheelchairs to play alongside other kids, includes sensory panels, and one item, a cozy dome, will allow children to crawl inside an igloo-like structure and observe other children on the playground. There is an accessible restroom and shelter that comply with the American Disabilities Act (ADA), along with an accessible picnic area for all ages.

Biography Opened in May 2016 Designed by Play by Design (Ithaca, New York) with local community input, “OurSpace at Rec Park” features “Spaces” for all ages and abilities. A flowing smooth surface pathway welcomes visitors of all abilities throughout the park’s many delights. The ramps and playground equipment are perfect for all generations to explore. This multi-generational playground expands the concept of play to beyond the boundaries of ability and age. At nearly 4 acres, this is the largest fully accessible multi-generational playground in the State of New York and 300 mile radius. Highlighting the project is a unique playground that captures the local architecture and history. From the famous “Link Trainer” to the Lackawanna Train Station, the 5-12 playground is fully accessible at all levels. The toddler playground invites the imagination and travel with a locomotive and canal boat feature. Toddler swings also include a “Generations” swing where adults can swing with their children. The playground is “boundryless” for all abilities. Special features include a wheelchair accessible Liberty Swing, accessible merry go round, Sway Fun, beautiful instruments, ramping, transfer stations and a unique natural play area with a rock climbing wall and slide. The play doesn’t end on the playground, this project includes an accessible sensory garden with raised flower beds, a central seating area for friends to gather, mosaic’d game tables, and a beautiful accessible tree house which includes a small amphitheater. With plenty of spaces and places for the imagination to explore, OurSpace at Rec Park welcomes all to enjoy the park. Our Space is included in the historic 24 acre Recreation Park, which also features an historic carousel, pool (with lift chair), accessible bathrooms, ball fields (accessible dug outs), tennis courts, open fields and easy parking. The park is open to the during daylight hours and is free to the public.

Biography Owen’s Playground (which opened in 2016) offers a recycled smooth rubber surface instead of wood chips, a relaxation station for reading, double-wide ramps, climbing structures, adaptive swings, wheelchair accessible play equipment, and two Gaga pits – a variant of dodgeball that is played with one ball.

Biography Hillcrest’s playground, which opened in 2016, offers something for all kids, no matter their interests or abilities. With a rubber surface instead of woodchips, double-wide ramps, and adaptive swings, it’s fully wheelchair accessible, and complete with merry-go-round, rocking bus, and climbing walls. A relaxation station allows quiet time for children who are over-stimulated to soothe themselves. Play panels, including a marble maze, provide hands-on activities for kids who want sensory play or independent games.

Biography The playground which opened in 2016 includes: a 4,000 square foot play area that features a rope wall, rock wall, along with a variety of castles, swings, slides and monkey bars for children of all ages and abilities. Biography About Palmetto Bay Park Soon after Village incorporation, this park transitioned from a 5-acre park to a 25-acre park facility — a veritable oasis of passive and active attractions, tucked off US-1 just east of the Village Municipal Complex. Formerly known as Perrine Park, Palmetto Bay Park was renamed by the Village Council in 2006. The new Palmetto Bay Park features expansive greenspace, basketball courts, the largest Boundless Playgrounds in South Florida, and a six-field, state-of-the-art softball complex, Palmetto Bay Park is truly a multi-recreational facility. The focal point of the park is a two-story concession building and observation deck. The park also houses an air-conditioned recreation room that allows for indoor recreation activities and meetings. A meandering tree-shaded pathway for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists surrounds the entire property. Covered picnic pavilions within the large open green spaces are a haven for family gatherings and party rentals.

Notes Recreation Centre offers other accessible activities: 25 metre salt purification swimming pool with six lanes, a multi -use leisure pool (includes features such as a zero-depth entry, a lazy river, a tots’ area, two additional lanes, spray toys and benches with hot tub jets), sauna, steam room, swirl pool, additional multi-purpose rooms and an accessible waterslide tower with an elevator allowing people with mobility issues to share in the enjoyment of riding southern Vancouver Island’s tallest and longest waterslide. (Min height to ride the waterslide is 42″) Aquatic Complex Project History two skating arenas, which are bare for four months in the summer, for ice and dry floor activities a weight room with cardio and strength equipment aerobics/fitness, fencing, yoga and a several of other courses indoor and outdoor tennis courts racquetball and squash courts community recreation programs such as arts, music, dance, computers, cooking, language and sports. A Sway Fun™ glider provides a unique play experience for children, Reach Play Panels offer lots of fun games, and overhead events, crawl tunnels, slides and more keep all children engaged while they play for hours. The playground consultant on this project was Habitat Systems. The surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography This universally-accessible playscape was designed after the many beautiful and unique landscapes found in Michigan-the Great Lakes State. Little explorers can discover Michigan’s wonders and learn about the Great Lakes State through simulated rock, water and fossil features. The playscape includes: an “Up North Woods” cabin, simulated tree fort, sand dunes area, marsh challenge course with simulated cattails, raised sand play area and multiple climbing areas. Colorful rubberized surfacing depicts Michigan’s Lakes and rivers. Biography A partnership between the Lafayette Consolidated Government and the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette, Parc Independence was designed specifically to accommodate children that have physical and developmental disabilities. It eliminates separations, thereby allowing all children to play together. Some features of the playground include extra-wide entrances and ramps to provide access for wheelchairs and other personal equipment, specially-designed swing sets to accommodate wheelchairs, limited entrance and exit points to assist parents and guardians in watching over their children, and many more features typically not considered in park design. Because even the smallest design elements can create the largest obstacles for many children with disabilities, careful attention has been paid towards making the Park ADA-compliant. Our intent is to eliminate barriers and create a place where all children can play together – regardless of abilities. In addition to the playground, Girard Park includes: Main office of Lafayette Parks & Recreation Department, Girard Park Recreation Center outdoor pool (seasonal lessons), 1.25 mile jogging trail, work-out station, covered pavilion with restrooms and grill (reservations required), open play area, tennis courts, hitting wall, basketball courts, backstop ball diamond, covered picnic areas, restrooms, handicapped restrooms, water fountain, children’s playground with baby equipment, 9-hole disc golf course, four petanque courts, pond, natural wildlife, and historical or commemorative markers.

Notes The Raanana Park is one of the largest green lungs in the Sharon area, offering vast, clean and well-kept spaces, as if it was only newly opened. There are many sitting areas here near a big lake, walking and bicycle paths and several sports grounds for a variety of activities. The Raanana Park also offers playgrounds with amusement facilities for children (including the “Friends Park”- a special disabled-accessible playground, the “Gan-Hai” covered zoological garden, a new bird-watching center, an observation point which is situated on a high topographic point and provides landscape views, a café and an exhibition space for works of art. By the way, it is not allowed to have a fire in the park’s area, which means that there are no barbeques here- a real advantage for those who look for a smoke-free peacefulness. The Raanana Park is situated nearYerushalayim (Jerusalem) Street, not far from Beit Levinstein Hospital. Biography In 2005, Beit Issie Shapiro opened the first accessible, integrated park for children in Israel. The project was a cooperative undertaking between the Municipality of Ra’anana, JNF UK, Keren Kayemet, – and was the first of its kind in Israel. The playground, established on a 9-acre area within the Ra’anana City-park, ensures that children with special needs are able to enjoy the recreational facilities of the park with their ‘regular’ peers. Park Chaverim (Friendship Park) includes paths, swings and carousels that can accommodate a wheelchair, as well as adaptations for children (or accompanying adults) with hearing and sight impairment See more pictures
