This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

This park includes a variety of musical instruments and sensory experiences. There are chimes, drums, a rain wheel and a texture panel. There is a digging pit as well as an elevated sandbox perfect for wheelchairs and walkers. This park also includes typical, baby, and adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography CLEMYJONTRI PARK features a unique playground where children of all abilities can play side-by-side. It is a playground where every child is welcome. This park is a place where children who use wheelchairs, walkers or braces, or who have sensory or developmental disabilities, can have a parallel playground experience of fun and exploration. At CLEMYJONTRI…. Ramps connect structures Swings have high backs, arm rests and special safety features Rubber surfacing allows wheelchairs to roll easily Lowered monkey bars provide easy access Equipment is designed to be sensory rich so all children can participate with peers Wider openings allows easy access to play structures Other features include a carousel and a picnic pavilion. The entrance road leads to an 81-space parking area and a drop-off zone for vehicles whose passengers need close access. Future development will incude other amenities in the surrounding 10 acres of space. PLAYGROUND To the casual observer, the playground at Clemyjontri Park looks like an ordinary playground, with swings, slides and play equipment fun to climb on, under and around. A closer look will reveal that some of those swings have high backs for children who need extra support. Instead of standard transfer platforms there are ramps to the elevated play components. Pathways between equipment are wide and colorful, and the ground surfaces are non-slip and porous designed to provide a greater level of access for children. There is something for everyone – children will be able to find something to climb on, touch, read, do or create. Children will enjoy the challenges of balance and depth perception on the playground’s balance beams. A mini-track can be used to race, playhouses and cubbies offer pleasant spaces for social interaction while also allowing children seeking quiet or separate areas to play in smaller groups. Tent sails provide areas of shade in the playground and benches are located throughout the play area. Just north of the playground is an asphalt trail that connects to site perimeter trails which will eventually encircle the park during future development. The Two Acre Playground Consists of 4 Outdoor “Rooms” Surrounding a Centerpiece Carousel. The Rainbow Room – With rainbow archway, surface with colors of the rainbow and a variety of swings Accommodates all physical levels Integrates sign, Braille, pictures and language Teaches colors of the rainbow The Schoolhouse & Maze – With learning panels forming a maze that may be reconfigured Focuses on educational learning games Teaches where am I reading, maps and a globe Teaches what time it is using time zones and clocks The Movin and Groovin Transportation Area – Designed with transportation themed equipment such as a race track, motorcycles, planes, and trains Stimulates imagination Teaches balance and special skills Mimics true roadway situations Fitness & Fun – Includes the largest piece of play equipment along with various jungle gym components Stimulates imagination Progressive challenges for physical strength Energy burner Builds confidence CAROUSEL Chariots, a spinning tea cup and 14 prancing steeds await only the imagination of children. The carousel is recessed to ground level so that it is accessible for wheelchairs, allowing children to transfer to the tea cup. The Liberty Swing is a swing that allows children in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing in the park. It is the only swing of its type that is fully lockable and allows a maximum swing height – that is, really swinging, not just rocking back and forth. Until now, some children have had to sit and watch from the sidelines as their siblings experience the freedom and exhilaration of a swing – something that most of us have taken for granted. Quote from Occupational Therapist “the therapeutic benefits are significant: visual-spatial, muscle tone, head control, self-regulation, attention, emotion. It’s a wonderful product”. Users please be aware: Prior to use of the Liberty Swing the user (or guardian) needs to complete a liability release. Two keys are required to use the swing: one to unlock the gated area surrounding the swing and another to unlock the swing itself. Keys are only guaranteed available when the park is staffed (carousel is operating). If you plan to visit on a day when the carousel is not operating and you wish to use the swing, please contact the office prior to your visit at 703-388-2807 x0 to make arrangements for a key. For users who desire to have a personal set of keys, they are provided free of charge at the Clemyjontri Park office during carousel operating hours (or by arrangement). PICNIC PAVILION The picnic pavilion, open daily dawn to dusk, is a wonderful location for community meetings, picnics, and gatherings. There is direct access to the pavilion from the parking area and entrance to the playground. The picnic pavilion is available for half-day and full-day rentals. When not reserved, the shelter is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional picnic tables are located on the property outside of the picnic pavilion when the pavilion has been reserved. Picnic Pavilion reservations cannot be made at Clemyjontri Park. Features of the Pavilion:* The shelter is aproximately 38′ by 38′, and holds six accessible tables to seat up to 48 individuals (including spaces for 16 wheelchairs). Cantilevered tops and cut out areas allow easy wheelchair access for children and adults. The pavilion offers both adult and accessible water fountains, as well as accessible restrooms with baby changing tables. Two GFI duplex electrical outlets are provided for public/park use. Notes The Multigenerational Park and Universally Accessible Playground is home to historic Stearns Tavern, one of the oldest buildings in Worcester. Plans include to eventually have accessible bathrooms for individuals with disability. Dedicated in honor of the late State Representative John J. Binienda, Binienda Beach (formerly Coes Pond Beach) includes a bathhouse, swimming area and sandy beach, perfect for family outdoor activities. The beach is located on the western side of Coes Reservoir and serves as the headwaters of the Blackstone River. During the summer months, visitors can rent kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards. Coes Reservoir is annually stocked with trout and is a favorite fishing spot among the locals. Non-motorized watercraft is allowed and informal launch sites are available at the John Binienda Memorial Beach and at the end of Circuit Avenue North. Biography Coes Park, opened in 2017 is a multi-generational, universally accessible playground off Mill Street, on the banks of Coes Pond. The park is sectioned into two, fenced in areas–one for the bigger kids and one for the littles although the younger ones can find lots to do and explore in the older kid’s area making this a great park for siblings. You will find a musical play area, “rock climbing” area, parent and child swings, lots of equipment for climbing and beautiful spots to enjoy a picnic. The wide paths, special play equipment, and rubber surface make the park accessible for those in wheelchairs and grandparents with walkers can enjoy getting up close to their grandchildren playing. It’s truly a park for everybody. The park provides recreational opportunities (passive and active), support facilities, ADA accessible walkways, a scenic overlook area, benches, landscape plantings, kiosks and signage. It includes 57 playground features, all of which are accessible. There also is a sledding hill, so you can have fun here all year-round!

This play area also features an inclusive PlayBooster® playstructure designed to welcome children and families of all abilities with its ramps, sensory-stimulating activities and a Sway Fun® Glider. There are two separate play areas in this park. The largest one located next to the parking lot includes a rubberized surface great for walkers and wheelchairs. The climber includes a ramp allowing wheelchairs access to some of the slides and equipment. The lower playground is accessible via ramp and includes climbers and both traditional and an adapted swing. Biography This picturesque 28-acre public park in Huntley, Illinois, is home to the Discovery Zone, which opened in 2010. It’s basically a play village for toddlers and preschoolers – with a rubber-cushion surface covering most everything that’s not a sidewalk, which are done in concrete. And despite looking like a junior amusement park, there is no admission fee. Your kids can pretend to get their hair cut at Hoppy’s Barber Shop, or serve up imaginary ice cream cones at the Huntley Dairy Mart. (There’s an abacus for keeping track of orders and money!) They can scramble around playground equipment that looks like a firetruck, steer a “school bus” that rolls from side to side, ride in a playground train, play a variety of musical instruments, put mommy in the “zoo,” or practice their shot at a series of basketball hoops of different heights.. The playground has a fence all the way around it and pour-in-place rubber surfacing. Just outside the Discovery Zone is a small brick building that contains men’s and women’s restrooms. (No diaper changing station.) You’ll likely want to bring your lunch or at least a snack. There are several tables inside the Discovery Zone, and more options outside the wrought iron fence that encloses it. There is a: sandbox with dinosaur bones buried in the sand. a musical area where the kids can make noises, and if they step on certain spots on the ground, chimes will ring. a chalk wall to color on (bring your own chalk) a Bankshot basketball court with hoops of all heights with crazy backboards (bring your own ball)

Biography The playground has a rubberized surface and low-level play structures. It is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers with a huge emphasis on pretend play. The playground encourages interaction with the senses, including touch, sight and sound. There are sensors beneath the rubberized surface play musical notes when they’re pressed. When two or more children press the sensors at the same time, they play a melody. Children can pretend to get their hair cut at Hoppy’s Barber Shop, or serve up imaginary ice cream cones at the Huntley Dairy Mart. There is a firetruck and school bus, a playground train, musical instruments, a zoo, and basketball hoops at different heights. There is also a sand area. Bells actually sound at the railroad crossing, and there is a giant chalkboard.

The 6,300-square-foot park has other special touches that include a therapeutic swing, a low ladder and crawl tunnel, and a ramp to a rocking covered wagon that allows a child in a wheelchair to join the fun.
