This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The Mary Virginia Crites Hannan Park sits at the corner of SR 188 and Pontius Road. Considered the crown jewel of the city’s park system, this 72-acre park is the newest and offers a natural park experience. Visitors enjoy an “Boundless Playground”, butterfly garden, a bird watching station, fire pit, a 1.2 mile paved trail, and a splash pad. There is also hiking trails. This is also an adult outdoor fitness area. Read a story about the creator of the park.

Notes Park Features: sports fields a small basketball court bikeways 1,231-square-foot brick shelter that houses restroom facilities. A “sound garden” offers a chance to make music on percussion instruments. Idren a safe way to interact with and study nature. Wire frames mold plants into tunnels A watchtower for parents in the middle of it all. An arbor covered in vines and a willow tunnel are part of the “Plant Play” area a boardwalk leads over a wetlands area. A maintained shallow area offers children a safe way to explore natural waterways. The “Earth Play” area features a pit where children can hunt through sand for casts of fossils. Biography Accessible from Mt. Airy and Westwood, Mt. Airy Forest’s 1,459 acres includes miles of hiking trails and bridle trails (located off Diehl Road) for horseback riders. Mt. Biography The park was built with many custom-designed elements to accommodate youngsters with mobility issues, vision or hearing impairments. Here are a few examples: The park is wired with sounds (train whistle, flowing water, etc) that can help a sight impaired child navigate. The large windows in the village houses allow parents to use sign language to communicate with hearing impaired children while they play inside. Broad ramps throughout the park let youngsters in wheelchairs get a loftier view of the world. And, the slides have transfer decks so children in wheelchairs can be helped onto the equipment. Biography Playground includes a large performer dome, spinner bowls, a spica — which is a rotating play piece — an accessible seat swing, number and letter grid stencils and U.S. and world map stencils on the playground blacktop. Notes SECOR PARK: In 2003, The National Center for Nature Photography opened on the site, rotating exhibits from prominent nature photographers. Additional attractions and amenities include large picnic areas, playing fields, indoor meeting rooms and picnic shelters, and wildlife feedings stations with indoor viewing areas, called Windows on Wildlife. Biography The Phase 1 playground features (which opened in 2018) include: A Rock-N-Raft offers a great way to play with friends while remaining seated; Wide ramps and low hand rails provide easy accessibility up the play structure; sensory wave climber, rings and a hand cycler give kids a chance to use upper body strength to play; slide transfers offer an easy access point to ride down slides, and soft surfacing offers accessibility throughout the play area. The playground’s design is focused around the 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design®, as outlined in Me2®, a program developed in partnership with PlayCore and Utah State University’s Center for Persons with Disabilities. The program provides an overview of why inclusion is so important, helpful research to help stakeholders understand diversity, inclusion, and social equity, and tips for designing inclusive play environments that benefit the whole child, whole environment, and whole community.®

Biography Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities along with the Fairfield County Soil and Water District, the US Natural Resource Conservation Service, the City of Lancaster, the Southeastern Ohio Center for Independent Living, and the Heart of Ohio RC&D created a unique addition to the Lancaster Heritage Trail. Biography The City of Stow, in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of Stow-Munroe Falls, began a fundraising campaign in 2007 to fund the building of a special needs playground. Donations from individuals and businesses in the community, along with funding from the City of Stow, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Kiwanis Foundation, CVS and Tallmadge Asphalt and Paving Company, allowed the project to move forward with construction. SOAR Playground opened for play in August 2008. SOAR Playground is fully accessible to all children, including those with physical or developmental disabilities, and provides an avenue for children of all abilities to play together. A special needs playground is an integrated play area that is specifically designed to insure that children of all abilities are able to play in a safe area created to meet their special needs. The playground includes a variety of stimulating opportunities for self-directed, challenging and independent play. SOAR Playground is located next to an existing playground at Silver Springs Park, allowing whole families to experience a truly barrier-free play environment. The addition of SOAR to the Stow Parks system allows children of all abilities to play, explore, and imagine with their friends and families.

Notes Summit Park, located in the center of Blue Ash, is a 130-acre world-class park project currently under development where visitors will enjoy interactive programming, unique learning opportunities and year-round experiences in one of the region’s most beautiful settings. Biography The Mission of the Walnut Grove Playground is to provide a recreational playground where individuals of all abilities are able to Learn Through Play and enjoy the freedom to interact with their peers. The playground is being completed in two phases, with the second phase being completed in 2019. Currently, The Walnut Grove’s playground – The Hine Memorial Fund Inclusive Playground – incorporates play equipment that is versatile and appeals to children of all age groups and abilities. It includes a large play structure featuring double wide ramps a variety of slides, climbers, activity boards and fire poles. Beyond the main center structure, are free-standing pieces for children to play on, including a We-Saw where up to 4 people can see saw together and wheelchair users have easy access to transferring themselves from their chair, the Rollerslide engages children that use Cochlear implants to slide down without any interference to their device and an Omni Spinner, which spins riders in circles. The entrance of the playground features a large shade structure for picnic tables and musical equipment, which allows children to explore and create their own music on a variety of drums and a metallophone. Each instrument is designed so that all children have access to it, including those in a wheelchair. The second phase of the Hine Memorial Fund Inclusive Playground will feature 5 additional play sections, including: Sand Play, an Imagination area with play structures, swings, motion and a triple Zip Krooz. The surfacing of the playground is poured in place rubber and concrete so that all are able to access the play area. At this time port-a-johns are available for use, but the board of directors is exploring other options for the future.

Biography Tire Pros and ATD have partnered with Boundless Playgrounds, Inc to open public “Tread Town” playgrounds constructed from hundreds of recycled tires. Too often, kids with disabilities are excluded from one of the simplest joys of childhood – playing at a playground. But these playgrounds are built to be completely inclusive, so children of all abilities can play together. Tread Towns include ramped wheelchair access to the highest platforms, state-of-the-art solid harness swings for kids who need extra back support, and lots of fun fitness and education-based activities for everyone.
