This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes The park area surrounding the WARF, the Warrenton Sports Complex, features seven rectangular playing fields, the Athey Fields, paved hiking paths (click here for Trail Map), an inline skating rink and skate park, and the new Claude Moore Fun For All Playground. The Claude Moore Fun For All Playground was constructed for all children, with particular focus on accessibility for children with disabilities. The park is designed to help all children with physical, social and psychological development and provides a place where children of differing abilities and their families can come together and have fun. The Town of Warrenton opened the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF) in September 2007 as a response to the growing recreational needs of its population of families, active adults and seniors. The WARF is a 59,738 square foot building featuring an 11 lane, 25 yard-by-25 meter, 364,000 gallon indoor competition pool; a 3,600 gallon therapeutic spa and a 68,000 gallon leisure pool with a water slide, lazy river, vortex and a zero depth entry for easy entrance by toddlers, seniors and those in wheel chairs. The WARF also has a 3,200 square foot fitness room equipped with upright and recumbent cycles, treadmills, elliptical trainers, circuit training gear and free weights. Fitness classes for those of all abilities are held in the WARF’s multi-purpose room. Biography “Claude Moore is a similar concept to Clemyjontri, but on a smaller scale. The bouncy rubber surface is a reassurance for parents. There are opportunities galore to balance such as various beams and stepping stumps. A four person teeter totter has high backs for children needing more support along with four spring rockers that have very good spring power! Opportunities abound for those wanting to reach new heights literally! There are two rock climbing pieces including a traditional wall as well as a semi-circular one that you can climb over or crawl through the structure. The most popular equipment was one of two cargo net pieces, with the favored one being the giant spider web as I called it. However, it looks more like a soccer ball. There were more slides than I could count, but there is definitely no shortage. Of the six swings available, there is a harness swing for children with special needs, one bucket swing for wee ones, and four standard swings for the older set. Little ones can bang on drums, crank gears, steer wheels, play tic-tac-toe, crawl through bumpy caterpillar-like tunnels, and enjoy their own mini play area.” Quote from https://www.our-kids.com/activity/54230

This park includes a variety of musical instruments and sensory experiences. There are chimes, drums, a rain wheel and a texture panel. There is a digging pit as well as an elevated sandbox perfect for wheelchairs and walkers. This park also includes typical, baby, and adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography CLEMYJONTRI PARK features a unique playground where children of all abilities can play side-by-side. It is a playground where every child is welcome. This park is a place where children who use wheelchairs, walkers or braces, or who have sensory or developmental disabilities, can have a parallel playground experience of fun and exploration. At CLEMYJONTRI…. Ramps connect structures Swings have high backs, arm rests and special safety features Rubber surfacing allows wheelchairs to roll easily Lowered monkey bars provide easy access Equipment is designed to be sensory rich so all children can participate with peers Wider openings allows easy access to play structures Other features include a carousel and a picnic pavilion. The entrance road leads to an 81-space parking area and a drop-off zone for vehicles whose passengers need close access. Future development will incude other amenities in the surrounding 10 acres of space. PLAYGROUND To the casual observer, the playground at Clemyjontri Park looks like an ordinary playground, with swings, slides and play equipment fun to climb on, under and around. A closer look will reveal that some of those swings have high backs for children who need extra support. Instead of standard transfer platforms there are ramps to the elevated play components. Pathways between equipment are wide and colorful, and the ground surfaces are non-slip and porous designed to provide a greater level of access for children. There is something for everyone – children will be able to find something to climb on, touch, read, do or create. Children will enjoy the challenges of balance and depth perception on the playground’s balance beams. A mini-track can be used to race, playhouses and cubbies offer pleasant spaces for social interaction while also allowing children seeking quiet or separate areas to play in smaller groups. Tent sails provide areas of shade in the playground and benches are located throughout the play area. Just north of the playground is an asphalt trail that connects to site perimeter trails which will eventually encircle the park during future development. The Two Acre Playground Consists of 4 Outdoor “Rooms” Surrounding a Centerpiece Carousel. The Rainbow Room – With rainbow archway, surface with colors of the rainbow and a variety of swings Accommodates all physical levels Integrates sign, Braille, pictures and language Teaches colors of the rainbow The Schoolhouse & Maze – With learning panels forming a maze that may be reconfigured Focuses on educational learning games Teaches where am I reading, maps and a globe Teaches what time it is using time zones and clocks The Movin and Groovin Transportation Area – Designed with transportation themed equipment such as a race track, motorcycles, planes, and trains Stimulates imagination Teaches balance and special skills Mimics true roadway situations Fitness & Fun – Includes the largest piece of play equipment along with various jungle gym components Stimulates imagination Progressive challenges for physical strength Energy burner Builds confidence CAROUSEL Chariots, a spinning tea cup and 14 prancing steeds await only the imagination of children. The carousel is recessed to ground level so that it is accessible for wheelchairs, allowing children to transfer to the tea cup. The Liberty Swing is a swing that allows children in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing in the park. It is the only swing of its type that is fully lockable and allows a maximum swing height – that is, really swinging, not just rocking back and forth. Until now, some children have had to sit and watch from the sidelines as their siblings experience the freedom and exhilaration of a swing – something that most of us have taken for granted. Quote from Occupational Therapist “the therapeutic benefits are significant: visual-spatial, muscle tone, head control, self-regulation, attention, emotion. It’s a wonderful product”. Users please be aware: Prior to use of the Liberty Swing the user (or guardian) needs to complete a liability release. Two keys are required to use the swing: one to unlock the gated area surrounding the swing and another to unlock the swing itself. Keys are only guaranteed available when the park is staffed (carousel is operating). If you plan to visit on a day when the carousel is not operating and you wish to use the swing, please contact the office prior to your visit at 703-388-2807 x0 to make arrangements for a key. For users who desire to have a personal set of keys, they are provided free of charge at the Clemyjontri Park office during carousel operating hours (or by arrangement). PICNIC PAVILION The picnic pavilion, open daily dawn to dusk, is a wonderful location for community meetings, picnics, and gatherings. There is direct access to the pavilion from the parking area and entrance to the playground. The picnic pavilion is available for half-day and full-day rentals. When not reserved, the shelter is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional picnic tables are located on the property outside of the picnic pavilion when the pavilion has been reserved. Picnic Pavilion reservations cannot be made at Clemyjontri Park. Features of the Pavilion:* The shelter is aproximately 38′ by 38′, and holds six accessible tables to seat up to 48 individuals (including spaces for 16 wheelchairs). Cantilevered tops and cut out areas allow easy wheelchair access for children and adults. The pavilion offers both adult and accessible water fountains, as well as accessible restrooms with baby changing tables. Two GFI duplex electrical outlets are provided for public/park use. Biography Clifford Bowey Public School Playground opened in 2016– located a behind Clifford Bowey Public School and the Deborah Anne Kirwan City Pool. The playground features a rubberized play surface, accessible playstructures with ramps and transfer stations, a raft swing, a swaying boat, a spinning cup, a variety of activity panels, and a communication board. A perimeter fence provides additional safety. The playground is open to the public outside of school hours.

Notes Park Features: A “Boundless Playground”–swings, music area, sand and water play Splash Pad Shelters Baseball Basketball Paved Walking Trail Skate Park Biography In September of 2009, a 10,000 square foot playground was assembled at the park in one day by volunteers from CVS Pharmacy. The playground was built with a $225,000 grant from CVS Caremark/All Kids Can and Boundless Playgrounds. The playground is fully accessible to people of all abilities and features a poured rubber surface making for easy maneuvering. The playground has ADA wide ramps, a variety of play equipment, swings with zero-G seats, tot seats and open seats, many climbing features, music play area, a sandlot with backhoes (one accessible), sand and water tables and other fun features, plus many swinging benches and covered tables to watch your kids play! The sprayground at Clippard Park will be open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend from 11 AM – 7 PM daily. It features a variety of motion activated features for all to enjoy plus a nice shaded picnic table for those who prefer to stay dry. Clippard Park has a paved walking trail that is 1/2 a mile long. A natural trail winds through the woods behind Shelter C adding another 1/4 mile. Park Access Springdale Road to north on Season Drive. Turn left on Pottinger Road and another Left on Dewhill Lane to the Park Entrance. Colerain Avenue to east on Redskin Drive (in between Outback Steakhouse and Frisch’s back entrance/exit). Turn left on Fairglen Drive. Fairglen dead-ends at the side entrance of Clippard Park. Visiting from out of the Area: If you are visiting the park from outside of Colerain Township and are not familiar with the area, take the Colerain Avenue exit off of I-275 and go south on Colerain Avenue and continue with the directions above. Notes The Multigenerational Park and Universally Accessible Playground is home to historic Stearns Tavern, one of the oldest buildings in Worcester. Plans include to eventually have accessible bathrooms for individuals with disability. Dedicated in honor of the late State Representative John J. Binienda, Binienda Beach (formerly Coes Pond Beach) includes a bathhouse, swimming area and sandy beach, perfect for family outdoor activities. The beach is located on the western side of Coes Reservoir and serves as the headwaters of the Blackstone River. During the summer months, visitors can rent kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards. Coes Reservoir is annually stocked with trout and is a favorite fishing spot among the locals. Non-motorized watercraft is allowed and informal launch sites are available at the John Binienda Memorial Beach and at the end of Circuit Avenue North. Biography Coes Park, opened in 2017 is a multi-generational, universally accessible playground off Mill Street, on the banks of Coes Pond. The park is sectioned into two, fenced in areas–one for the bigger kids and one for the littles although the younger ones can find lots to do and explore in the older kid’s area making this a great park for siblings. You will find a musical play area, “rock climbing” area, parent and child swings, lots of equipment for climbing and beautiful spots to enjoy a picnic. The wide paths, special play equipment, and rubber surface make the park accessible for those in wheelchairs and grandparents with walkers can enjoy getting up close to their grandchildren playing. It’s truly a park for everybody. The park provides recreational opportunities (passive and active), support facilities, ADA accessible walkways, a scenic overlook area, benches, landscape plantings, kiosks and signage. It includes 57 playground features, all of which are accessible. There also is a sledding hill, so you can have fun here all year-round!

Notes It is located in the Austin Community, Columbus Park totals [135.12] acres. The field house features: a fitness center; 2 gymnasiums; 3 kitchens; meeting rooms; senior center and banquet room. Outside, the park offers a nature area, boundless children’s accessible playground with an interactive water feature, bicycle path, jogging path, pavilion and 9-hole golf course. In addition Columbus is a multi-faceted recreation park with an outdoor swimming pool, fishing lagoon, baseball fields, and athletic fields for football and soccer and basketball courts. The beautiful “Refectory” building sits on the park’s grounds and is a popular destination for weddings and special events. Many of these spaces are available for rental such as parties and athletic tournaments. Patrons are especially fond of renting the beautiful Refectory Building for weddings and other formal parties. Park-goers can play basketball, football or soccer at the facility. Afterschool programs are offered throughout the school year, and in the summer youth attend the Park District’s popular six-week day camp. In addition to programs, Columbus Park hosts fun special events throughout the year for the whole family, such as Movies in the Park and concerts.”
