This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Legacy Commons is a community gathering area adjacent to the Memorial Park Promenade. While the Promenade encourages people to walk between Downtown Rapid City and the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Legacy Commons offers a destination for more community members and visitors to stay and enjoy Memorial Park. In keeping with the Remembrance and Renewal theme of the 2012 40th anniversary of the 1972 flood, Legacy Commons has features to help remember the flood while offering new features for current and future generations. Remembrance features include a coordinated look at existing memorials, and includes moving the war memorial from its current location to a prominent place adjacent to the Promenade and adding a spray jet fountain in the pond that resembles the smaller spray in the existing flood memorial. The renewal features in Legacy Commons include five separate play areas with adjacent themed gardens Climber area with art garden Accessible inclusive play area with an elevated accessible garden Nature climbing area with adjacent Black Hills, prairie and medicinal gardens Age 2-5 play area with a children’s garden Active play area with an adjacent sustainable landscape. The play areas and gardens surround a three-fourths acre Great Lawn for spontaneous and planned gatherings. Discovery features within Legacy Commons include 70 images of plants, animals and fossils hidden throughout the park, and, for the parents, ample benches to relax, or three separate fitness features to work out. The existing hillside amphitheater features a new at-grade concrete stage/platform for events as well as a comtemplative area next to Rapid Creek. All bike path connections and through routes remain. The restroom interiors at the existing bandshell will be remodeled to accessibility standards. The sculptural play area features an artful Evos® playsystem for kids ages 5 to 12. All children can have fun in the inclusive play area that includes a Sensory Play Center®, Sway Fun® Glider and accessible sensory garden. In the natural play area, kids discover a mix of nature-inspired components, including custom rock outcrops typical of those found in the Black Hills. Interwoven throughout the area for 2- to 5-year-olds are custom features celebrating Ellsworth Air Force Base. And finally, kids can play Pulse™ Tennis and Pulse™ Table Tennis, the interactive and multisensory games for 2 to 8 players. Biography The inclusive playground was installed in association with the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. In addition to being fully inclusive, the playground offers a nature-inspired play experience with log steppers, climbers that mimic logs and boulders, and a tree house. The nature-inspired features along with the sensory- and accessible-focused playground components help to welcome children of all abilities.

Notes Features: Interactive Maze Accessible Slides Accessible Swings Water Play Two “Tree Houses” Biography This 10,000-square-foot playground’s colorful zoo and carousel theme draws on historic community landmarks, enchanting adults and children. Little ones can travel through a fun-filled, interactive maze while school-age kids slide, swing, and play with the animal artistry. Two zoo animals guard the entrance…ready to spray water at the touch of a button. For the more adventuresome, two “tree houses” provide hours of mystery and intrigue. The playground was made possible through the combined efforts of Councilmember Ed Reyes, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, and Shane’s Inspiration. The equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography Thi sLandscape Structures Inc playground includes a PlayBooster® playstructure which provides lots of fun for kids ages 5 to 12. There is a TurboTiwster™ Tunnel Slide, Summit Climber™, and Corkscrew Climber. Plus a PlayOdyssey® Roof provides shade from harmful UV rays. A portion of the playground has been surfaced with Playground Grass. The other portion of surfacing in wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground. Notes Kershaw County-West Complex – 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff. Located on Hwy. #1 between Lugoff and Elgin. Includes 4 tennis courts, 3 lighted soccer fields, 4 lighted baseball fields, walking track, 2 shelters, Handicapped Accessible playground and restrooms. Biography The playground includes a fully ramped play structure, another structure featuring various climbing challenges and rockscape climber, swings including adaptive seats, freestanding play components and poured rubber safety surfacing. The park is also fenced, and has site furnishings and shaded areas for caregivers to sit while their children play.

Biography The 16,000-square-foot all-inclusive playground with sun-shade covered play decks, swings, sensory play equipment and ramps for wheelchair access opened in 2016. The playground includes: A swing for wheelchairs. A 50-foot “zipline” ride for kids in bucket seats. A shady tunnel with star-shaped inserts that light up on sunny days. A bucket-seat merry-go-round. Special slides that don’t generate static electricity, which could interfere with cochlear implants or hearing aids. The “Learning Wall” with Braille letters. There is a Splash Pad next to the playground.

Biography Key features of the playground which opened in 2015 include areas of music, motion, and sanctuary such as sensory elements with drums, xylophones, and a boat that sways; a slide equipped to eliminate static electricity that can inhibit the play experience for students with cochlear implants; and visual panels with letters, numbers, and puzzles that include braille. The playground also features an area for outdoor experiential learning, including sandblasted animal footprints and a garden area with plants for identification and discovery.

Notes Some play features include: The Airplane: Young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. They can communicate with the Control Tower via a talk tube radio and plan their route on the navigation panels. Accessible Slides: The accessible slides lead to rubberized surfacing designed for children with mobility challenges. Sand Castle: Our Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. Water Play: Water offers a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. Biography The playground,located in South Los Angeles, has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Features include a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. The UAP also has resilient rubberized surfacing and shade structures for each play area. A totally inclusive play environment incorporates a a Landscape Structures Inc PlayBooster® playstructure with climbers, slides, accessible play panels, ramps, and tunnels. The playground also features a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s playground and splashpad opened in 2014. A medieval-themed playground was designed for kids ages 2 to 5 to encourage imaginative play. Kids of all abilities can storm the castle, congregate with knights at the round table and jump on the TuffRider® Horse for a quick getaway. Plus, kids ages 5 to 12 will stay active on the sports-themed PlayBooster® play structure. Components mimicking soccer balls, basketballs and baseballs help carry the theme throughout the play experience. Notes Hours: The park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Parking: $7 per vehicle for day use. Dogs: Permitted on leash no longer than 6′ in length. License required. Accessibility: Paved, wheelchair accessible trails, accessible playgrounds and picnic areas. Restrictions: Alcohol not allowed in park without a group picnic area reservation. This popular park in northwest Sonoma has fields for soccer and baseball, tennis and volleyball courts, an accessible playground and picnic sites, and 2.5 miles of nature trails winding through 40 acres of backcountry. Biography The playground combines the spherical design of Evos® with the traditional PlayBooster® playstructure. Landforms were used to create elevation so that space wasn’t taken up by really long lengths of ramps. A gradually sloped boardwalk takes visitors to the top of a mound so that everyone can see the amazing views of the water and the city. Horizontal bars installed at varying heights were incorporated so that individuals working on building upper body strength can truly progress from one level of challenge to the next. Notes The Renton Accessible Playground is an exciting joint effort between the City of Renton, the Renton School District, Renton Rotary and is also supported by multiple community funding partners and individual contributors. The accessible playground is being designed for all ages and abilities. It will share property between the new Meadow Crest Early Learning Center (formerly Hillcrest Early Childhood Learning Center) and the North Highlands Neighborhood Center. And there’s an official name,Meadow Crest Playground. Biography This playground opened in 2014.
