This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Opened in May 2016 Designed by Play by Design (Ithaca, New York) with local community input, “OurSpace at Rec Park” features “Spaces” for all ages and abilities. A flowing smooth surface pathway welcomes visitors of all abilities throughout the park’s many delights. The ramps and playground equipment are perfect for all generations to explore. This multi-generational playground expands the concept of play to beyond the boundaries of ability and age. At nearly 4 acres, this is the largest fully accessible multi-generational playground in the State of New York and 300 mile radius. Highlighting the project is a unique playground that captures the local architecture and history. From the famous “Link Trainer” to the Lackawanna Train Station, the 5-12 playground is fully accessible at all levels. The toddler playground invites the imagination and travel with a locomotive and canal boat feature. Toddler swings also include a “Generations” swing where adults can swing with their children. The playground is “boundryless” for all abilities. Special features include a wheelchair accessible Liberty Swing, accessible merry go round, Sway Fun, beautiful instruments, ramping, transfer stations and a unique natural play area with a rock climbing wall and slide. The play doesn’t end on the playground, this project includes an accessible sensory garden with raised flower beds, a central seating area for friends to gather, mosaic’d game tables, and a beautiful accessible tree house which includes a small amphitheater. With plenty of spaces and places for the imagination to explore, OurSpace at Rec Park welcomes all to enjoy the park. Our Space is included in the historic 24 acre Recreation Park, which also features an historic carousel, pool (with lift chair), accessible bathrooms, ball fields (accessible dug outs), tennis courts, open fields and easy parking. The park is open to the during daylight hours and is free to the public.

Notes Patton Park (formerly City Park) is located in the 1200 block of south Main Street (Highway 83).Patton Park resides on 3 acres and features a shelter house, bathrooms, and Park on the Plains playground (dedicated 12-5-09). Patton Park is located near several restaurants making it an excellent spot for a carryout picnic at one of the many picnic tables. The shelter house is right next to the playground and has electrical outlets for roasting pans, coffee makers, portable stereos, or any other device needed for a good family picnic or business party at the park. A grill and a drinking fountain with a spigot are near the shelter house. The Park on the Plains playground was built in the fall of 2009 by volunteers from the community using funds raised by the community. It is an improvement over the older equipment, much of which was saved and moved to Maddux & Palmer Parks. Biography This Leathers and Associates playground was built by volunteers in 2009.

Paved walkways lead to the rubberized playground surface. This surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. There is a wide assortment of sensory equipment at this park including, tube slides, ride-on bouncing animals, a teeter tooter, and sensory panels. The larger of the two climbing structures is accessible via ramp, allowing access to slides and sensory panels. There are typical, adapted, and baby swings at this park. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Biography Buckle in and rocket to the moon at the space-themed Universally Accessible Playground at Parque De Los Sueños in East Los Angeles. This colorful planetary play space features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing. Older astronauts can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and while hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes. A fully-accessible 3-foot-high maze provides hours of active and imaginative play. And for children with developmental delays, sound pucks embedded in the playground encourage auditory discovery. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground, with equipment from Landscape Structures Inc, and the playground consultant was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography Patricia LeBlanc playground is Fort Worth’s second accessible playground for children of all ages and abilities. It includes musical instruments, audio, swings, slides, and bridges to encourage children’s motor, visual, and auditory processing. This park also has shorter structures and turf to lessen the risk of injury. It also includes two covered pavillions, water fountains, portable restrooms, and benches (some covered).

Biography Read the blogs about this amazing playground and see great pictures: OCmom blog Fun Orange County Parks Pavion Park Playground is about universal play, and providing fun activities and equal access for all, including children and caregivers of all ages and abilities. The City of Mission Viejo contracted RJM to update its old playground with an emphasis on Universal design. The park retained its original features such as a Braille wall and dedicated off-street accessible parking, while adding new features that include a rubberized surface with footprints/signage of indigenous animals from adjacent Oso Creek, and new equipment that reinforces the universal-design principles. The park includes a wide variety of accessible play equipment including a main tree house with slides and accessible ramps and interactive boards, rocking boat that fits a wheel chair, accessible sand diggers, spinners, swings that are equipped with harness/support to protect a child’s neck, and interactive light/sound games. Shade trees surround the playground, and benches and chairs face one another and are embedded throughout the playground to encourage visitors to interact. Biography Play Garden Park is located next to the public library. This park has a Custom Castle Theme with areas for children ages 2-‐5 years old and areas for older kids ages 5–12 years old. The areas are on poured in place surfacing with fencing around the entire play area. Play Garden Park offers beautiful landscaping with sidewalks, benches to rest, and a fountain. There is also a pavilion on the grounds.

Biography This is a Level 1–Playground for All Children. See pictures Opened in 1984 and renovated in 1997, this play facility, one of a few of its kind in the entire nation, serves youngsters with and without disabilities. Available to the public and to school and community groups, the playground offers a variety of recreational and instructional activities. The site features a wide variety of activities for children ages 3 to 12. This playground was designed to accommodate children using crutches, canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, and to provide many opportunities for social, cognitive, sensory and motor activity. The Apparatus Area has play equipment with safety surfacing, a traffic bridge with traffic lights, slides and swings, and a 12-foot-long suspension bridge. Children learn about nature on the Interpretive Trail with plaques in English and Braille. The Racing Track winds around the Water Wheel area for children to cool off in. The Amphitheatre contains a performance area with a basketball court and seating, and the adjacent Meadow Play Area provides space for running games and the like. The Sports Games Arena has a basketball court, a baseball diamond, and an area for volleyball, badminton, and other net games. There are also benches and drinking fountains throughout the playground. The Playground for All Children also provides Parks sponsored learning programs. The Gardenature and Nature Crafts Program teach children simple methods of conservation through hands-on activities, and the Arts and Crafts Program is designed to enhance self-expression and creativity. The Sensitization Program helps able-bodied children better understand disabilities, and the After School Program includes board games, arts and crafts, and indoor sports. Sports games include basketball, volleyball, football and a Playground for All Children softball league. the Playground for All Children is open from April to November.

Biography This Leather and Associates playground includes a centralized Pirate Ship complete with waves, a rain wheel and a motion platform. There are numerous slides, bridges, rings and monkey bars (both high and low), and tunnels to explore. There is a lighthouse just like the in Port Washington’s Harbor, a rock wall with a fantastic underwater mural, chain walk, and balance beams. In the TOT Lot, a fairy tale castle, bouncy bridge, police car and a raised sandbox inspire younger children. Both areas include a variety of swings, including several designed with additional support for children with limited muscle strength. A music area features palm drums, metalliphones and a drum shaped like an alligator! Biography The park was built with many custom-designed elements to accommodate youngsters with mobility issues, vision or hearing impairments. Here are a few examples: The park is wired with sounds (train whistle, flowing water, etc) that can help a sight impaired child navigate. The large windows in the village houses allow parents to use sign language to communicate with hearing impaired children while they play inside. Broad ramps throughout the park let youngsters in wheelchairs get a loftier view of the world. And, the slides have transfer decks so children in wheelchairs can be helped onto the equipment. Biography The playground is located at the back of the park, by Long Lake. Ramona Park has a fully-staffed and lifeguarded beach. The playground has both a large play structure for five- to 12-year-olds and a smaller play structure. The playground has a Sway Fun, two bouncing bug toys, a spinning toy and a PlayMotion X-Wave 2. Biography Renee’s Place has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Each play area has a swing set and shade structures. The UAP also has colorful resilient rubberized surfacing and benches embellished with whimsical artist created tiles. The five to twelve-year-old area is in the shape of a train. Sound features include a train engine, whistle and sound of a train going over tracks. Another special feature of the 17,000-square-foot playground is a foot path with a water element that will provide a unique sensory activity, complete with gentle mist. This carpeted playground has a large play structure with an airplane theme, but the best part of the playground are all of the ground level play activities that provide great vestibular motion. There is an accessible swing, a 4 person see-saw, a 2 person airplane rocker, and a tea cup spinner. There is good shade in the play area and there is a flat grassy area nearby.
