This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Some play features include: The Airplane: Young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. They can communicate with the Control Tower via a talk tube radio and plan their route on the navigation panels. Accessible Slides: The accessible slides lead to rubberized surfacing designed for children with mobility challenges. Sand Castle: Our Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. Water Play: Water offers a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. Biography The playground,located in South Los Angeles, has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Features include a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. The UAP also has resilient rubberized surfacing and shade structures for each play area. A totally inclusive play environment incorporates a a Landscape Structures Inc PlayBooster® playstructure with climbers, slides, accessible play panels, ramps, and tunnels. The playground also features a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. One of the features in the Airplane where young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. Notes The beautifully landscaped and peaceful park across from the east entrance to Macy’s Department Store is named for four women, all with the same first name, who made significant contributions to education on the Peninsula. Biography The playground’s design will facilitate sensory experiences in the following areas: visual, vestibular, tactile, kinesthetic/proprioception, auditory and will offer children an interactive experience when visiting the shopping center. Along with sensory play, the playground will also feature interactive mobile experiences. Guests will be able to download the special app to listen to the stories in up to 16 languages, as well as, create and save photos with their children and characters from the stories. The playground will be themed after two classic Hans Christian Anderson stories- The Little Mermaid and the Ugly Duckling. Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s playground and splashpad opened in 2014. A medieval-themed playground was designed for kids ages 2 to 5 to encourage imaginative play. Kids of all abilities can storm the castle, congregate with knights at the round table and jump on the TuffRider® Horse for a quick getaway. Plus, kids ages 5 to 12 will stay active on the sports-themed PlayBooster® play structure. Components mimicking soccer balls, basketballs and baseballs help carry the theme throughout the play experience. There are textured slides for blind kids and metal slides for kids with cochlear ear implants. The ramps and pathways are wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass. Located in Hillcrest Park, the playground project was spearheaded by Concord resident Liz Lamach whose son, Matteo, uses a wheelchair and is blind. As a member of the City of Concord Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission and the Lions Club of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, Lamach brought people together to make Matteo’s dream of an accessible playground a reality. During the build that took place from April 20 to 29, 2007 over 2,000 volunteers constructed the massive playground, the largest in Concord covering an area a third the size of a football field. The playground incorporated many accessible elements allowing children with disabilities to play alongside able-bodied children. Accessible elements and fun features include: Wheelchair ramps allowing children in wheelchairs or walkers to be positioned on upper levels of the structure where they can “play on the colossal Rocking Boat and platform tree houses Visually impaired children have access to a sensory garden and tactile Alpine slide with three types of surfaces for children to feel High back swings Clear see through tunnel for autistic children who have difficulty transitioning from light to dark places. Low and high overhead ladders and sets of rings allow wheel chair access Large scale xylophone style instrument Water misters Aluminum slide was installed for children with cochlear implants. Static derived from plastic slides fry the surgically implanted cochlear devices. Slide surfaces stay cool even when temperatures exceed 90 degrees. Biography The playground combines the spherical design of Evos® with the traditional PlayBooster® playstructure. Landforms were used to create elevation so that space wasn’t taken up by really long lengths of ramps. A gradually sloped boardwalk takes visitors to the top of a mound so that everyone can see the amazing views of the water and the city. Horizontal bars installed at varying heights were incorporated so that individuals working on building upper body strength can truly progress from one level of challenge to the next. Biography Parking in and around the park is very limited. There is a parking garage which for a 3 hour visit will $5.00 he new Mayor’s Grove Playground is a Boundless™ playground, which has sensory-rich features that allow children and caregivers of all abilities to interact with each other at his or her highest standard. It is an interactive playground that is accessible and fun for children of all abilities. On a Boundless™ playground, you will find: Play structures that support children’s development Universally accessible pathways and surfacing Swings and bouncers with back support NOTE: The surfacing is a combination of pour-in-place and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Notes The Renton Accessible Playground is an exciting joint effort between the City of Renton, the Renton School District, Renton Rotary and is also supported by multiple community funding partners and individual contributors. The accessible playground is being designed for all ages and abilities. It will share property between the new Meadow Crest Early Learning Center (formerly Hillcrest Early Childhood Learning Center) and the North Highlands Neighborhood Center. Biography Designed as a Boundless Playground, the playground equipment is designed for 2 to 5-year-olds and 5 to 12-year-olds. It includes a play structure with a ramp wide enough for mobility devices. You’ll find accessible swings, along with traditional belt and bucket swings. And there also are a variety of drums and other noise-making play pieces. The surface under all of the equipment is rubber matting.

Biography Mikey’s Place has two primary playscapes. The one for smaller children feels like it goes on forever and is in a well fenced area with other equipment and activities. The playscape for older children is quite high, and features both some unique climbing options and a more gradual ascent that even a 2 year old can manage. Biography Milagro Playground includes wheelchair accessible picnic tables, a 720-foot Challenge Circuit that surrounds the park, a Triple-Shootout basketball court with baskets of varying heights, seat walls and a Tot Lot. The Tot Lot includes a sand and water play area, swings for tots, climbing structure with slide, a teeter-totter, diggers, surfaces made of rubberized cement (Tot Turf) and a shade structure. It is the World’s First Ultra Accessible Family Fun Park designed specifically for children and adults with special needs, their family members, caregivers, friends and the entire community. This 25-acre park is a unique oasis, that through the spirit of inclusion, allows people of all abilities to play, learn and share life changing experiences together, in a fun and safe environment.

Morgan’s Wonderland is a seasonal park. Opening and closing times may vary throughout the year, dependent upon the season. Please note that our park is closed in January and February. Our operating seasons runs from March through December.

Children under 2 and people with special needs are free. The admission for the rest of the family ranges from $10-$15.

Morgan’s Wonderland and the STAR Soccer Complex are located just northeast of downtown San Antonio at Thousand Oaks and Wurzbach Parkway. This is the former site of the Longhorn Quarry and is directly across from Heroes Stadium, the North East ISD Stadium and Sports complex.

	Butterfly Playground Our brightly colored butterfly-themed play area is filled with lively activity. The play area is shaded and has a rubberized surface for comfort and safety too! The two playgrounds were built with Landscape Structures Inc equipment and the playground consultant on the project was Lone Star Recreations.
	Wonderland Express & Depot All aboard! Gather at our 1930s-style train depot to climb aboard the Wonderland Express! The Wonderland Express pulls multiple cars with specially designed wheelchair-accessible ramps so the whole family can enjoy a fun and relaxing ride together. The train runs all the way around our scenic eight-acre lake.
	Starlight Amphitheater With our picturesque eight-acre lake as a backdrop, the Morgan’s Wonderland Amphitheater provides the perfect setting for joyful and captivating performances and special events!
	Off-Road Adventure Ride Hop on or wheel into an off-road vehicle and cruise around the twisting, turning Morgan’s Wonderland track!
	“Taking Flight” Bronze Sculpture Artist Doug Roper’s inspiring sculpture is the unique and beautiful centerpiece of the Morgan’s Wonderland Family Fun Park. The 25-foot-tall work of art is the first thing guests see as they get set to explore the park. “Taking Flight,” the largest cast-bronze sculpture in San Antonio, took 800 pounds of clay, 1,500 pounds of steel and 6,200 pounds of bronze to create.
	Carousel Visitors young and old, regardless of ability to play, can experience the gigantic, whimsical merry-go-round!
	The Wharf “Drop anchor” at our rustic Fishing Wharf for an afternoon of fishing and fun!
	Pirate Island Playground & Garden Ahoy, mateys! Cross a bridge and get ready to explore an island full of fantasy and fun!
	Walk & Roll Path Take the scenic route around Morgan’s Wonderland and enjoy a quiet stroll or roll with great views of the lake, gardens and fountains!
	Garden Sanctuary & Memorial Wall This peaceful garden along the lake shore has been landscaped to create a lush oasis within the park. Winding trails and quaint alcoves serve as the perfect escape for those who want a quiet retreat and a cool, relaxing break.
	Water Works Get set to get (a little) wet! Our Water Works play area is an interactive array of water-related gizmos such as squirting pipes and spinning water wheels, plus special dams that control water flow. All of it is specially designed with many sensory activities involving lights, sound and tactile features, and of course it provides full wheelchair access to all the wet and wacky fun!
	The Picnic Place Lunching was never so much fun! Enjoy a snack from Morgan’s Wonderland or from your own lunchbox here in this delightful, shaded oasis!

Although there is nothing that can be directly accessed from a wheelchair, you can get right up to play on all items except for the tall play structure. There are also many items that can be accessed by people who can be transferred or just had low motor skills. There are many play features that swing, spin, or bounce for children who benefit from those types of vestibular motion. The large school-aged climber has stairs so those with low motor skills can still get to the top. There is ample shade in the park with a variety of seating to include Adirondack chairs for those who may need some back support, benches, and picnic benches. There is also a fountain with a dog bowl attached.

The larger playground is modeled after a racetrack complete with cars and road! The rubberized playground surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The larger of the two playgrounds is divided into ages 2-5 and 5-12. Special care was taking in designing this playground in order to include a wide variety of textures and materials. Sensory equipment includes musical instruments, various moving bridges, and sensory wheels. The park also includes a large number of adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.”

Biography The Oak Brook Sandlot, a Universal Playground is designed so everyone, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to socialize, play, and explore together. Play is a critical part of the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of every child. Unfortunately, the vast majority of playgrounds deny children with disabilities and critical illnesses the opportunity for exercise, entertainment, and social interactions other children enjoy. The Oak Brook Park District built the Oak Brook Sandlot, a Universal Playground filled with poured in place surfacing, double wide ramping and is fully fenced to ensure everyone has the opportunity to play and build meaningful relationships. This one of a kind playground has multiple slides, is fully ramped and has a dual track zip line. Come visit us to experience this universal playground for yourself! These playgrounds can also include accessible amenities, which can include drinking fountains and comfort stations. All NYC playgrounds have pour-in-place rubber or tiles for surfacing. This playground does NOT have an adapted swing seat.
