This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes The Miracle League Park is a regional complex with the world’s largest rubberized ball field for children and adults with physical disabilities. The facility also has a playground with 28 different pieces of equipment, each one being handicap accessible. The purpose of this park is to remove those barriers that keep children and adults with disabilities from experiencing the opportunity and sheer joy of playing the childhood games we all have enjoyed over our lifetimes. The field is capable of being used for baseball, soccer, basketball and flag football, with other sports to be added later, as needed. Currently, we host Spring and Fall leagues for both children and adults. Other amenities include: A full sized concession stand Restrooms A quiet room for children with autism Biography The inclusive playground features a playstructure with an extensive ramping system in addition to many inclusive playground components like the Rollerslide, Sway Fun® glider and multiple activity panels. An Evos® playsystem was also included in the design to deliver more climbing and sliding opportunities for kids of all abilities. Even more, the Sensory Play Center®, OmniSpin® Spinner, Roller Table, Cozy Dome®, We-saw™, Oodle® Swing and many more freestanding play components were added to the design to encourage interactive play among children of all abilities. Biography Surrounded by palm trees and a rubber play surface, a new play park on the Oceanfront features cameras where visitors can look out into the water and view surfers or dolphins. It also has musical drums, a playground with monkey bars and slides, a boardwalk that leads out to the water and a sensory wall for the autistic and visually impaired. The playground equipment comes from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on the project was Sparks@Play. There are three paths that take you near the water where you help build sand castles with sand scoops. Beach wheelchairs will be available. There are shaded as well as sun areas for you to hang out. There is a long, gently-inclined ramp that leads to a “lookout” deck six feet above the ground. The deck has room for four wheelchairs, as well as several accessible telescopes. It provides a bird’s-eye view of the park, beach, and ocean that who use wheelchairs rarely get to see. This unique play space has an extensive ramping system to take children using mobility devices to the center of the action. Some of the components included are the Sway Fun®, a Sensory Play Center™, accessible cyclers, various climbers and slides. Biography The Jumpstart Inclusive Playground at Earl Bales Park in Toronto is over 16,000 sq feet of inclusive, accessible play space. The Playground features rubber surfacing flat to the curbing, to provide east access for all mobility devices from surrounding pathways. This playground goes far beyond basic accessibility standards. The playground structure itself has double-wide ramps throughout, allowing multiple mobility devices to be able to access and move in any direction without issue. The Playground features a ton of other key accessible features – some include: – Roller Slide: removes static electricity so that children with hearing aid devices can participate in sliding – Transfer Benches: found at the bottom of most slides to provide children with a spot to either transfer back into their mobility device or take a breath without tons of kids sliding behind them – Low Entry Elements: the Omnispin, We-Saw, Hexaplex, etc have low and easy entry points – Sensory Elements: a sensory wall & other sensory boards throughout the space – Education Panels: normalizing all abilities teaching about ASL & Braille and highlighting kids of all abilities in art throughout – 5 Kinds of Swings: Standard belt swing, bucket swings with harness for core stability, baby bucket swings, a saucer swing & double friendship swing – Cozy Dome: A place to retreat to for kids that may be feeling over stimulated – Sway Fun: A rocking element that can be boarded by both wheelchair users and non-wheelchair users alike – Music Zone: lots of musical instruments with different vibrations and sounds for stimulation There are bathrooms in the Earl Bales Community Centre a short walk from the playground, and a splash pad/sensory garden right next to the playground.

Biography KC2 is an all-inclusive playground, sensory garden and outdoor classroom. The community did fundraisers, wrote grants and help fund the project using Community Development Corporation funds. After two community build days the project is now complete and we will host a community-wide grand opening on Friday, May 10th, 2013 Kids Colony 2 is a playground for all children of all abilities in our community and surrounding area!1 acre of playground area with new playground equipment and pavilion with plenty of seating for parents. Phase II of Kids Colony 2 is a community-built all-inclusive playground, sensory garden and outdoor learning center planned to be built in early spring 2013. The theme of Phase II is Pioneer Town with a school house, cotton gin, bank, general store and jail. Plus a little house on the prairie. There will be native plants with interpretive signs and lots of fun! This play structure replaced the much beloved Kids Colony that was community built in 1993. These are the playground renderings. Biography Located at the trail head of St. Tammany Trace, the Kids Konnection Playground was designed based on the theory of “parallel play,” which means that individuals with and without disabilities can play side by side. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires 50 percent handicap accessibility. The Kids Konnection Boundless Playground is 70 percent handicap accessible. The fence and gates offer added safety for parents of all children. The surfacing of the playground provides added safety and accessibility. It is “latex free,” allowing individuals with Spina Bifida to play without the worry of exposure to latex. The Roller Slide was added to the design to offer a slide that individuals with Cochlear implants could enjoy. The Sway Fun offers a safe alternative for individuals in a wheelchair to experience swinging The playground provides sensory experiences with sand, plants and sound. Individuals who are hearing or sight impaired or those with autism can benefit greatly from these sensory centers. Kids Konnection Playground Hours: 7 days a week (except closed for ½ day Christmas Eve, all day Christmas Day & Thanksgiving Day) 8 am – 5 pm November, December, January, February 8 am – 6 pm March, April, September, October 8 am – 7 pm May, June, July, August CLOSED every MONDAY morning until 11:00am for maintenance

Winding paths and ramps are integrated into the design; chair swings are side-by-side with traditional-style swings; varied surfacing on walkways provides textural cues; and lush landscaping appeals to the senses of sight, touch and smell. Restroom facilities include adult-size changing tables and extra room for wheelchairs and strollers. Combining Play with the Natural Environment Kids Together Playground could be described as “a playground in a garden” or “a garden in a playground”. The extensive use of landscaping features – trees, plants and rolling hills – makes Kids Together Playground unique and inviting for all generations of visitors at all times of the year. Plants at KTP have been specially chosen to be child-friendly, with a stimulating variety of colors, textures and fragrances. Plants provide natural materials – leaves, sticks, seeds and flowers – that can be used in creative and imaginative play. Art for Play As Kids Together raised funds for playground construction, another community group, Cary Visual Art, joined the effort by commissioning and funding artwork for Kids Together Playground. This added dimension was the perfect complement and brought even greater opportunities for kids to explore creative and imaginative play. By expressing their interest and commitment during the design phase, Cary Visual Art was able to work with our design team to reserve spaces for functional art. KATAL – by William Moore, Pittsboro, NC This multi-piece sculpture invites children of all ages to climb aboard. There’s an especially cozy spot in the curl of KATAL’s tail! CVA held a contest for children to name the sculpture and KATAL was born, as an acronym for Kids Are Together At Last. Many children identify KTP as “the Dragon Park”. This wonderful sculpture also inspired the Kids Together mascot. Oracle Benches and Dinosaur Bench – by Jim Gallucci, Greensboro, NC The oracle bench invites interactive fun – whisper into one trumpet-shaped tube, and your friend on the other end can hear you! It’s designed so wheelchair-users can play, too. The bright purple dinosaur bench adds color and a resting place near the toddler swings. Botanical Benches – by Rodney Carroll, Baltimore, MD Giant, aluminum leaves decorate these four benches, each one accurately representing the leaves of a different tree – gingko, sassafras, redbud and tulip poplar. Biography The playground opened in September 2021 and is a place where all children, regardless of abilities, can play together. The City of Clinton partnered with Shane’s Inspiration/Inclusion Matters on the project Children with physical, social-emotional, sensory, cognitive, and communicative disabilities can play alongside able-bodied children, with ALL benefiting from the health and socialization aspects of a playground. Adults with disabilities are able to access the play area to accompany their children/grandchildren while playing. This is especially beneficial to military members who are facing the challenges associated with reintegrating into civilian life after deployment. For military members with physical disabilities, full participation in family life is vital to the family’s well-being. The all-inclusive playground is located adjacent to the Clinton Community Center and Aquatic Center at 1002 E. Sedalia Avenue.
