This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Open daily, 10am – 3pm, except holidays and holiday weekends. A $1 donation per child is suggested; train rides cost 50 cents and are offered Monday – Friday at 11:30am and 1:30pm. The playground is filled with swings, slides, see saws, sand boxes, fantasy play houses, miniature golf, an activity center, picnic areas and accessible rest rooms. The facility is easily accessible by taking I-95 to Route 117 (West). Look for our sign on your right at the second light. Contest winner is a sign of success

It has double wide ramps so wheel chairs can pass each other, all steel design, GTImpax Turf which is a synthetic turf safety surfacing. It has a 12′ fall height meaning it protects kids from broken bones and concussions if they (God forbid) fall from the e It has ADA swings too. Everything is in a natural color scheme that blends with the Historic Kennedy Park landscape which is an Olmstead Park.

Biography After being destroyed by fire, the Island Park Playground was rebuilt in 2009, again using Leather and Associates for their design work. Some of the features of the playground include farm-themed Tot Lot, a Boulder, and climbing nets.

Notes Park setting Completely fenced Toddler area 5-12 year old area Combination surfacing Biography Jonathan’s Dream was one of the first inclusive playgrounds created in the United States. It lead to the creation of Boundless Playgrounds a non-profit organization (now closed) that helped create over 100 accessible playgrounds throughout the United States. Jonathan’s Dream is located less than four miles from downtown Hartford at the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. From the city, follow Route 44/Albany Avenue West, then make a slight right onto Bloomfield Avenue/CT Route 189. Jonathan’s Dream will be on your left. The sign for the playground is small, so watch for the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center entrance sign, then follow smaller signs that lead to ample free playground parking. NOTE: The surfacing is a combination of Pour-in-Place and wood mulch (EWF) and as a result maybe difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver around the playground. Notes The Miracle League Park is a regional complex with the world’s largest rubberized ball field for children and adults with physical disabilities. The facility also has a playground with 28 different pieces of equipment, each one being handicap accessible. The purpose of this park is to remove those barriers that keep children and adults with disabilities from experiencing the opportunity and sheer joy of playing the childhood games we all have enjoyed over our lifetimes. The field is capable of being used for baseball, soccer, basketball and flag football, with other sports to be added later, as needed. Currently, we host Spring and Fall leagues for both children and adults. Other amenities include: A full sized concession stand Restrooms A quiet room for children with autism Biography The inclusive playground features a playstructure with an extensive ramping system in addition to many inclusive playground components like the Rollerslide, Sway Fun® glider and multiple activity panels. An Evos® playsystem was also included in the design to deliver more climbing and sliding opportunities for kids of all abilities. Even more, the Sensory Play Center®, OmniSpin® Spinner, Roller Table, Cozy Dome®, We-saw™, Oodle® Swing and many more freestanding play components were added to the design to encourage interactive play among children of all abilities. This playground does NOT have an adapted swing seat. Biography Karst features the Splashpad water play area, the huge Playscape accessible playground, a disc golf course, and a fenced dog park in addition to the Commons rental building, several picnic shelters, smaller playgrounds, and athletic fields. Walking trails circle the arboretum and extend into the natural forested sections of the park, where there are a couple of ponds.

The goal of Kayla’s Playground is to offer the most accessible equipment on the market to date. There are many transfer areas and raised platforms to access slides and equipment. Another piece of accessible equipment on Kayla’s playground is the Merry-Go-Round, which does not require a key and is accessible by 2 wheelchair users.

Biography The playground that opened in September 2022 includes a 2-5-year-old and 5-12 year old areas. Both areas have ramped structures with sensory pieces. The playground includes a group swing, an accessible glider, and an accessible whirl. The playground includes sensory play pieces for children, spaces for solitude, wide ramps for wheelchairs to easily accompany youth onto pieces, diverse seating options allowing wheelchairs or walkers to easily access, safe and soft flooring for transition from piece to piece seamless and safe, and versatile pieces that allow individuals with or without upper/lower mobility to still experience the play features. Biography The playground built by volunteers opened in 2015. Located at 31st Street & 14th Avenue on Kenosha’s north side, Petzke Park is a City of Kenosha park. It includes: Pour-in-place rubber surfacing A picket fence with one entry. A ramping system Swings: accessible swing seats, Liberty Swing (requires a key to operate – contact Public Works for more information), group swing Wheelchair accessible merry-go-round Monkey bars, climbing walls and slides in varying heights and configurations whimsical musical instruments mosaic artwork braille and sign language displays. Biography The mission of Kids’ Park Lafayette is to provide a safe, accessible, learning and recreational environment to people of ALL ages and ALL abilities. There are two accessible playgrounds divided by age groups. In addition to the accessible playgrounds, there is an accessible Sensory Botanical Garden on the grounds of Lafayette Elementary School which stimulates the senses through use of flowers and plants (sight and smell), musical instruments, chimes, and seed pods (hearing), textured plants (touch), and edible herbs (taste).

Winding paths and ramps are integrated into the design; chair swings are side-by-side with traditional-style swings; varied surfacing on walkways provides textural cues; and lush landscaping appeals to the senses of sight, touch and smell. Restroom facilities include adult-size changing tables and extra room for wheelchairs and strollers. Combining Play with the Natural Environment Kids Together Playground could be described as “a playground in a garden” or “a garden in a playground”. The extensive use of landscaping features – trees, plants and rolling hills – makes Kids Together Playground unique and inviting for all generations of visitors at all times of the year. Plants at KTP have been specially chosen to be child-friendly, with a stimulating variety of colors, textures and fragrances. Plants provide natural materials – leaves, sticks, seeds and flowers – that can be used in creative and imaginative play. Art for Play As Kids Together raised funds for playground construction, another community group, Cary Visual Art, joined the effort by commissioning and funding artwork for Kids Together Playground. This added dimension was the perfect complement and brought even greater opportunities for kids to explore creative and imaginative play. By expressing their interest and commitment during the design phase, Cary Visual Art was able to work with our design team to reserve spaces for functional art. KATAL – by William Moore, Pittsboro, NC This multi-piece sculpture invites children of all ages to climb aboard. There’s an especially cozy spot in the curl of KATAL’s tail! CVA held a contest for children to name the sculpture and KATAL was born, as an acronym for Kids Are Together At Last. Many children identify KTP as “the Dragon Park”. This wonderful sculpture also inspired the Kids Together mascot. Oracle Benches and Dinosaur Bench – by Jim Gallucci, Greensboro, NC The oracle bench invites interactive fun – whisper into one trumpet-shaped tube, and your friend on the other end can hear you! It’s designed so wheelchair-users can play, too. The bright purple dinosaur bench adds color and a resting place near the toddler swings. Botanical Benches – by Rodney Carroll, Baltimore, MD Giant, aluminum leaves decorate these four benches, each one accurately representing the leaves of a different tree – gingko, sassafras, redbud and tulip poplar. Biography “Cobb Park (Kidscape Village I & II) was my winner simply because it has several different play structures for all ages and abilities – most of which were updated within the last 4 years. One of those playgrounds is fully wheelchair accessible and includes swings with additional support for those children who need it. Whether your child wants to climb, hang, spin, swing, or slide there are multiple areas for them in this 5.8 acre park. Large umbrellas provide a bit of shade on the play structures for the kids, though the parents are mostly left out in the sun despite the many mature trees in the area. The toddler playground seems to get the best shade. There is a pavilion with picnic tables and the restrooms are somewhat close, depending on where you are in the park (they’re in the concession building near the baseball field). As if that’s not enough, there is a very small play area on the opposite side of the park (on Bank Street) that is for young toddlers. It has a playhouse, a variation on a merry go round, swings, small slides, and a “hive” climbing structure. There are 2 potential downsides: first the park is open on 3 sides: to the parking lot on one side, and to low traffic roads on the other 2 sides. However, it’s large enough that accidentally running out to the road is not really a problem. The other issue is that it is across the street from Campbell High School and when school lets out there is an influx of teens trying to sneak a cigarette before going home and releasing some pent up energy. Separate Playgrounds: 3 play structures (toddlers, 5+, and the wheelchair accessible one), 3 separate swing areas, multiple netted climbing areas, rock wall and train…and that’s not including the additional playground on the far side of the park described above! Ground: Mulch throughout most of the playground, rubber on the wheelchair accessible playground and swings. These convert to volleyball courts for youth and adult leagues. “Open gym” recreation is available when leagues are not in session. A four-lane, 25-yard lap pool. Large play structure. Lazy River. A large serpentine slide that is part inside and part outside the building. Therapy pool. Eight-person spa. Party pit area. Biography The playground opened in September 2021 and is a place where all children, regardless of abilities, can play together. The City of Clinton partnered with Shane’s Inspiration/Inclusion Matters on the project Children with physical, social-emotional, sensory, cognitive, and communicative disabilities can play alongside able-bodied children, with ALL benefiting from the health and socialization aspects of a playground. Adults with disabilities are able to access the play area to accompany their children/grandchildren while playing. This is especially beneficial to military members who are facing the challenges associated with reintegrating into civilian life after deployment. For military members with physical disabilities, full participation in family life is vital to the family’s well-being. The all-inclusive playground is located adjacent to the Clinton Community Center and Aquatic Center at 1002 E. Sedalia Avenue. The playground, which is completely fenced and has poured-in-place surfacing includes: • 2 multiple activity play units: 1 for 2-5 yr. olds and 1 for 5-12 yr. olds with: Slides Climbing structures Activity panels Rocker/Glider Transfer stations in appropriate locations A variety of other play stations Swing set with inclusive seats, tot seats and adult/child combo seats Musical instrument area (5-6 instruments) Cozy dome We-Saw, a 4-child see-saw apparatus We-Go-Round Climbing Net Loft Playhouse for 2-5 yr olds Nook Playhouse for 6-24 months Benches Shaded areas over equipment and seating A fully accessible restroom facility Parking area with ADA spaces (car and van) that exceed the required amount
