This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes 6 acres, divided into 4 areas: Discovery Hill—Discovery Hill is located in the southeast quadrant of Tongva Park. It features a children’s play area, shaded picnic area, and children’s splash pad (hours may vary due to efforts to reduce water usage during the current drought). Garden Hill—Garden Hill is located in the northeast quadrant of Tongva Park. It features seating bays, walking paths, and a shaded picnic area. Gathering Hill—Gathering Hill is located in the northwest quadrant of Tongva Park. It features a grassy ampitheater where many of the free performances produced by the City are held. It’s also home to Weather Field, a public art piece by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle. Observation Hill—Observation Hill is located in the southwest quadrant of Tongva Park. It features 18′ overlooks, shaded seating, walking paths, and public restrooms. Biography This playground was built by volunteers from Terasen Gas as part of their annual Community Giving Day. The new playground is aimed at children six and under and is accessible to all young ones regardless of any disability they may have. It features a special, safe sponge surface and a variety of playground equipment including swings, slides, climbing structures and special toys like a giant toy turtle for the kids’ entertainment.

Biography The wide ramps and rubber surface accommodate wheelchairs. The bucket-seat swings are good for kids who need extra support. A slide made out of roller balls is designed for children, such as those with autism, who like touch sensations. One of the slides is made out of metal instead of plastic, which can be a hazard to children with cochlear implants, which aid hearing. The equipment comes from Landscape Structures Inc. The playground is tucked away in a residential neighborhood up a steep hill behind the School for the Deaf, off Route 62. There’s a flower garden, a picnic table, three benches and a good-sized grassy area. The park is closed to the public when the School for the Deaf is in session but is otherwise open to anyone.

The playground promotes inclusive, unstructured play with ramped wheelchair access to the highest platforms, and features an exclusive Tread Town tire swing, state-of-the art solid harness swings for children who need additional back support, and a multitude of other cutting-edge fitness and educational-based activities. This Boundless™ Playground was built with funding in part from the American Tire Distributors, Inc.
