This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography From Time Out Chicago Kids, “This 5,500-square-foot park is best known for its slide: Wheelchairs can be rolled up the eight-foot-long ramp, with room on top for someone to help a child out of a chair and down the slide. It’s named in memory of Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner’s son, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy who loved slides so much that his parents would carry him up, then ride down with him. The park also has wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and ground covering made of ground-up tires, which is both a smooth surface for wheelchairs and good for cushioning falls.”

Biography Although located in the middle of bustling Brisbane, Australia, this park’s wooded setting is ideal for such a nature-inspired playstructure. In this magical, woodland kingdom of play, there is something for everyone. Notes The Boyce Mayview Park is home to the Upper St. Clair Community Recreation Center as well as Regulation Baseball Field,Baseball/Softball Field, Multipurpose Field, The Miracle League Field, Pavilions, Concession Stand, Batting Cage and The Outdoor Classroom Biography Opened in the spring of 2015 at the Upper St. Clair Miracle League Field, this unique playground was designed like the skyline of Pittsburgh. The yellow all accessible bridge is built to resemble Roberto Clemente Bridge as seen from Pittsburgh Pirates PNC park. There are Red LED lights that are push button activated, which are the same lights asused on a truck trailer on top of bridge light up. Another climber resembles Ft. Duquesne bridge. There is blue climber that resembles PPG Place. There are accessible swing seats and a bird nest swing. A NEOS 360. A piano that one can roll and run over to make it play. Biography The playground opened in September 2016. There are chair swings along with typical swings; a chair zip line, next to a typical zip line; and the main structure doesn’t have rope ladders or other moving objects that could prevent a person with disabilities or a small child from using it. There is merry-go-round was designed to be wheelchair-transferable. There is a sensory wall. The playground was developed by Hope Helps which is dedicated to promoting local scholarships, research & advocacy to those individuals diagnosed with autism and their families.

Biography Playground includes: Wheel Chair Swing, Roller Table, Omni Spinner, Sway Fun, Sand Diggers and Adult Molded Bucket Swing all from Landscape Structures. The park was the signature project of the United Way’s Day of Caring on May 8, 2012. On that day, 75 volunteers contributed 450 man-hours to installing the equipment and beautifying the park. The playground’s surfacing is engineered wood mulch which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver throughout the playground.

Notes Directions to the park: From HWY 99, take the Olive Drive exit and head west on olive drive. Take a right at Fruitvale Avenue. Fruitvale/Norris Park is located on the southeast corner of Fruitvale Avenue and Norris Road. The park is 17.6 acres and includes the following amenities. Four baseball diamonds (two lighted) Multi-purpose field Two basketball courts Two tennis courts Two horseshoe pits Restrooms Family picnic pads Two group picnic shelters Children’s play area Open play area Recreation building Mature shade Biography The Fruitvale Norris Universal Playground is a custom Playworld tree house themed play structure set on a poured-in-place rubber surface. The 2-12 age playground is nestled within a mature park and is in close proximity to our accessible Universal Ball Diamond. Components of the playground include 12″ and 24″ platforms with easy to reach guard rails on each side, a wheelchair accessible ramp and a short length slide. Activity panels include drum and chime panels, a nature search-and-find game with nature sounds and the quintessential steering wheel at an accessible height. One of two key features is the Aero Glider, a hybrid swing & teeter-totter that allows for a full 5′-0″ wheelchair turning radius and enough room for two wheelchair users to sit side-by-side. It also includes seats and exterior ride space to encourage cooperation and teamwork among children of all ages and abilities. The second key feature is the Cozy Cocoon, a specifically designed sphere with autism in mind. This sphere is fun for all children and is an enclosed space with windows to allow for a child to ‘escape’ when overstimulated. The Cocoon sways, rocks and spins within a limited area and has helpful grips for smaller hands to provide easier entry and exit.

Notes This playground and spray park are part of the huge Chinook Winds Regional Park complex. The park area is still being developed. There is currently a skate park, a number of baseball diamonds and a hockey rink with boards that contains basketball courts in the warmer months. A seasonal concession with washrooms is opening this summer (2012) located between the spray park and playground. Biography This playground features preschool structure with steering wheel and double slide; school-age structure with slide and climbing wall; wave balance beam; 2 bowl spinners; tri-motorcycle bouncer; 4 swings (2 saucer swings); 2 stand spinners; large ring spinner; surf board. The ground floor of this playground is completely accessible. Although there is nothing that could be directly accessed from a wheelchair, you could get right up to the play on all items. There are also many items that could be accessed by people who could be transferred or just had low motor skills. There are many things that swing, spin or bounce for children who benefit from those types of vestibular motion. The large school-aged climber has stairs so older children with low motor skills could still get to the top. The sprayground features: many small sprays; two water cannons; 2 tall water dumping towers; musical piano sprayer; hoop sprayer.

Biography This is an inclusive playground where the equipment is almost all wheelchair accessible. The equipment is designed to encourage co-operative play and is large enough to be used by older disabled children who may need more space for wheelchairs and sometimes helpers. A safe community space due to adequate fencing and gates, it contains sensory equipment such as sand, textured surfacing and sensory planting, along with tactile signs for less well sighted visitors and pictorial signs for people with learning difficulties. Notes Located in the southeast corner of Elmhurst, Butterfield Park was renovated in 2016 and is home to the Park District’s inclusive playground, the Playground for Everyone, which is perfect for children of all abilities. Butterfield Park also has four baseball diamonds as well as a recreation building, picnic shelter, lighted tennis courts and soccer field. The recreation building serves as a satellite location for Sunbeams & Rainbows. Those with sight and hearing impairments will find that the play equipment offers fun, sensory-rich activities. Braille and sign panels encourage learning and interaction. Children with mobility issues can join in the play via a series of ramps and transfer systems that allows access to 90% of the play structure. A rubberized ground surface and covered picnic areas are available to the whole family so that everyone can interact at the playground. Those who may have felt that the world was not open to them will know that this is a place for them and for all children.

The park not only includes a playground, but it also includes a bankshot basketball court and a splash pad. Rotary Centennial Park was made possible by the 3 Rotary Clubs in Jonesboro (Rotary Club of Jonesboro, Rotary Club of Jonesboro – University, and Rotary Club of Jonesboro – Metro), and it was dedicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rotary International.

Biography This playground is dedicated to the memory of Sarah McCullough, a little girl that inspired her mother to dream of a place that all children can play. A true inclusive playground, this play area allows for all children to put aside physical and mental differences and play together. The rubber Poured in Place surfacing allows for great mobility to all pieces of equipment. This playground with equipment from Landscape Structures Inc has poured-in-place safety surfacing and a variety of play panels, overhead events and ramps. In addition, a Sway Fun® glider and Elevated Sand Table provide sensory-rich experiences. The playground consultant for this playground was O’Brien & Sons.

The park is open to the public during daylight hours. Visitors are greeted with a one-of-a-kind sculpture. This sculpture was created by local artist, Bill Kolok, from refurbished wheelchair wheels. Like all the amenities in the park, this sculpture blends aesthetic beauty with interactive design- spin the wheels to hear all the fun sounds they make. There is a play structure where children of all ability levels can play alongside one another as equals. Slides, tunnels, and obstacle course features make this playground a fun challenge for our more able-bodied visitors as well. There is a large table with stackable blocks. There is a fish pond, bridge, and dry bed creek for children to explore. There are other unique features including a wheelchair maze. See pictures. code
