This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This playground was built over a week with around 300 volunteers. The design and the assistance with community build was done by Leathers and Associates. Among the attractions: an asparagus climbing forest; a broccoli tree house; a strawberry cottage; an artichoke amphitheater; a spinach harvest rock climbing wall; a berry produce stand; a lettuce maze; and a lettuce triple slide.

Notes Directions to the park: From HWY 99, take the Olive Drive exit and head west on olive drive. Take a right at Fruitvale Avenue. Fruitvale/Norris Park is located on the southeast corner of Fruitvale Avenue and Norris Road. The park is 17.6 acres and includes the following amenities. Four baseball diamonds (two lighted) Multi-purpose field Two basketball courts Two tennis courts Two horseshoe pits Restrooms Family picnic pads Two group picnic shelters Children’s play area Open play area Recreation building Mature shade Biography The Fruitvale Norris Universal Playground is a custom Playworld tree house themed play structure set on a poured-in-place rubber surface. The 2-12 age playground is nestled within a mature park and is in close proximity to our accessible Universal Ball Diamond. Components of the playground include 12″ and 24″ platforms with easy to reach guard rails on each side, a wheelchair accessible ramp and a short length slide. Activity panels include drum and chime panels, a nature search-and-find game with nature sounds and the quintessential steering wheel at an accessible height. One of two key features is the Aero Glider, a hybrid swing & teeter-totter that allows for a full 5′-0″ wheelchair turning radius and enough room for two wheelchair users to sit side-by-side. It also includes seats and exterior ride space to encourage cooperation and teamwork among children of all ages and abilities. The second key feature is the Cozy Cocoon, a specifically designed sphere with autism in mind. This sphere is fun for all children and is an enclosed space with windows to allow for a child to ‘escape’ when overstimulated. The Cocoon sways, rocks and spins within a limited area and has helpful grips for smaller hands to provide easier entry and exit.

Notes 6 acres, divided into 4 areas: Discovery Hill—Discovery Hill is located in the southeast quadrant of Tongva Park. It features a children’s play area, shaded picnic area, and children’s splash pad (hours may vary due to efforts to reduce water usage during the current drought). Garden Hill—Garden Hill is located in the northeast quadrant of Tongva Park. It features seating bays, walking paths, and a shaded picnic area. Gathering Hill—Gathering Hill is located in the northwest quadrant of Tongva Park. It features a grassy ampitheater where many of the free performances produced by the City are held. It’s also home to Weather Field, a public art piece by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle. Observation Hill—Observation Hill is located in the southwest quadrant of Tongva Park. It features 18′ overlooks, shaded seating, walking paths, and public restrooms. Biography The “Tread Town” playground is designed to allow children with and without disabilities to play together. ATD/Tire Pros opened this in partnership with its franchisees. The Tire Pros-sponsored Tread Town parks take the Boundless Playground design one step further, using recycled rubber from approximately 400 scrapped tires for the foundation for each playground. This type foundation creates a universally accessible surface that allows children and caregivers with and without disabilities to navigate freely and safely, ATD said. Tread Towns also feature a specially designed tire swing with state-of-the art solid harnesses for children who need additional back support, along with other cutting-edge fitness and educational-based activities.

Notes Park includes: Childrens play area, basketball courts (unlighted/outdoor). Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground. Kids ages 5 to 12 visit this jungle-themed playground for spectacular sensory and inclusive play fun. A custom Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) sensory wall morphs from a tree into an elephant, with a leopard and other animals hidden within. Kids are encouraged to climb aboard these custom animals and nature-inspired rock climbers, breeze down the Roller and Cloudburst® Slides and enjoy the Sway Fun® Glider with all of their friends. Biography This engaging Universally Accessible Playground centers on a ship theme, providing an accessible Control Central, complete with two balconies with steering wheels to navigate! These steering ports offer children with disabilities the opportunity to sail side-by-side with their peers. A maze panel, which is accessed from the deck and the ground level, also facilitates interaction while honing fine motor skills. For the more adventuresome, a pod walk, which helps develop balance and depth perception, provides a short cut to the Engine Room. After setting your course, you can relax with your friends in the Living Quarters of the good ship SS WilshireCrest. Or why not challenge your co-captain to a friendly game of tic-tac-toe? A signing panel gives all mates the chance to learn a new language while bright talk tubes let you stay in close contact with the Engine Room.
