This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Hadley’s Park Playground at Dulles Town Center is a 5000 square foot playground and was built in keeping with the “shopping theme,” and was built around Main Street USA, where you have everything from your local bank to a post office. The playground provides accessibility to disabled children and their able-bodied friends and siblings. Hadley’s Park, Inc. is a local grassroots non-profit organization created in 1996 by Shelley Kramm, of Potomac, Maryland to design, develop, fund and build “A place for all kids to play together”. Project is located in the Dulles Town Center Commons within the 554-acre master planned community and adjacent to the 1.4 million square foot Dulles Town Center super-regional mall and planned 4.5 million square foot Class A Office Park.

Biography From Kids Haven, “Hannah’s Dream is a huge playground in the huge East Shore Park, not to be confused with East Rock Park. Both are in New Haven, but Hannahs’ Dream is in the eastern part of New Haven, across a bit of water. It feels like a different city and far away, but the access is by the highway so it takes no time to get there on I95-North to exit 50 (the second exit across the Q bridge). Turn immediately onto Woodward Avenue for 1 mile south. The entrance is at the corner of Hervey Street. The park can also be reached by the G bus line that goes down Townsend Avenue to Lighthouse Park. East Shore Park has an ice rink, tennis courts, access to the water, and several playing fields. Hannah’s Dream includes a sandbox (bring your own toys), several swing stations, and several play structures, including half a dozen slides. One section is for younger kids. There is a portable toilet in warmer months. Note that the park is not fully fenced and that Woodward Avenue is busy. A full list of Boundless Playgrounds in CT visit Places for Kids CT.

Biography Located in the Roger Williams Park Carousel Village; left of the Carousel Village Café. The colorful, fully enclosed playground with a Mr. Potato Head who greets children of all ages as they enter the park, now boasts a toddler area, slides, drums, play panels throughout the labyrinth of walkways, swings, slides and climbing structures. Children with physical disabilities can enjoy at least 70% of the play activities without having to leave their support equipment behind. The equipment is designed to be sensory rich and developmentally appropriate so children with all types of abilities can laugh, play and grow together. There is also a 3,500 square foot sensory garden which houses over 500 plants. Visitors learn about horticulture and the natural world through plants that have different textures, scents and colors. The ground cover is recycled tire flooring and is completely accessible allowing kids in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility to get right up into the play. The preschool climber features an old west theme which provides ample opportunities for imaginative play. There is a slide and bridges with room for a wheelchair to move around at the ground level. There is a saucer swing and a small merry-go-round spinner. There are a number of features that spin or swing for children who benefit from vestibular motion. The school-aged climber has ramps that ascend 3 levels with panels, a canopy and a room to turn around at each level. There is also a musical panel on the ground level. There are slides and a flying fox. There is a standing spinner, and a small merry-go-round spinner that can be used by people who were able to be transferred. There is a saucer swing, a regular swing and a baby swing. Street parking is available however payment is required. There are benches and picnic tables near the playground. The trees in the park are young so there is not much shade.

Biography Designated as “Boundless Playground #49 by the National Center for Boundless Playgrounds, this playscape features a separate loose-fill play area that included pour-in-place rubbern surfacing into the main deck of the KOMPAN Pirate ship. This Kindergarten area also features a colorful trike track and rocking piece with support back and sides. The 2nd-3rd composite structure is ramp accessible but activities for children with disabilities, although in compliance with ADA, are still limited. The KOMPAN Galaxy structure is accessible at ground level to get ALL children into the Center of Play. It has the same concrete ramp and access area as Woodland Elementary. Spinning pieces compliment this great playground that will help ALL children play together. Located in a fast developing area of town.

Notes A green oasis in the downtown area, located at 30 E Broad St, across from the City Municipal Building. It’s a great place for lunchtime picnics. The Department’s Performance Pavilion is located in this park. This park is also home to a beautiful interactive fountain which flows daily throughout the spring/summer season. The Heart of the City Playground, the area’s only all-inclusive, fully-accessible playground, was also built inside the park in late 2015. This Leather and Associates designed playground has a NASCAR theme. The larger playground is modeled after a racetrack complete with cars and road. There is rubberized playground surfacing. The larger of the two playgrounds is divided into ages 2-5 and 5-12. Special care was taking in designing this playground in order to include a wide variety of textures and materials. Sensory equipment includes musical instruments, various moving bridges, and sensory wheels. The park also includes a large number of adapted swings.

These playgrounds can also include accessible amenities, which can include drinking fountains and comfort stations. All NYC playgrounds have pour-in-place rubber or tiles for surfacing. This playground does have an adapted swing seat. The oldest playground in Central Park, and the largest at 1.8 acres, Heckscher Playground includes a great variety of play features and spaces. Its primary entrance is the central breezeway of the newly updated Heckscher Building. Features: The playground includes a shaded area with swings and slides; a multiuse area comprised of synthetic turf and safety surfacing; and a large, maze-like climber and water feature with tunnels, ramps and slides. Water Feature: Water flows from the highest point of the climber and down to elevated water channels, which children can walk through. The water ends at ground level in an area where a variety of water jets spray into the air. Younger children can cool off in a semi-enclosed area with a low and gentle spray. Recent Reconstruction: The Central Park Conservancy reconstructed Heckscher Playground in 2005 and the Heckscher Building in 2007 Nearest bathroom: Located inside the Heckscher Building, which features separate entrances for playground users and the general public.

Biography There is a tiny tot area for those who are just crawling or learning to walk, a medium sized area for preschool age tots and a larger play structure for the more experienced climbers. The giant rope sphere is the highlight of the playground. There are also two baby bucket swigs as well as a super cool giant disc swing (see photos.) And to top it all off, the entire playground has the soft, cushy floor we parents all love. The Hippo Playground Project is an all-volunteer, community based organization that works in conjunction with the Riverside Park Fund (a 501(c)(3) organization) and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to maintain the playground and provide free activities for the community. For over 25 years, The Hippo Playground Project has improved and maintained equipment and provided free activities for one of the Upper West Side’s favorite playgrounds. Biography This is a conceptual plan of the Hope Park. It was built in 2013 by community volunteers over the span of a week. The playground is completely fenced. There is a toddler area as well as a 5-12 year old area. There are swings in both areas that include adapted swing seats. This is a Leathers and Associates designed and built playground. The playground includes a bird nest swing and sensory wall. The surfacing is pour-in-place

Biography The playground has a Smith Rock theme and includes 10 slides and parallel zip lines for children with and without disabilities. There is a 5-12 year old area and a 3-5 year old area. There are even a few pieces of equipment designed for toddlers. There is a group swing as well as accessible swing seats, belt seats, and toddler seats. Other equipment includes: an accessible glider, basketball hoops, two ramped structures, climbing rocks and much more. Sidewalks are 8 feet across, wide enough so that two wheelchairs can be operated next to each another. And the entire playground area has a soft surface. An inclusive wheelchair whirl was added to the playground in 2017.

Click here for a printable key request form Biography Trillium Health Resources has awarded New Hanover County Parks and Gardens with a $750,000 Play Together Grant which will go towards constructing an inclusive playground at Hugh MacRae Park. The new playground which opened in 2016 provides inclusive play opportunities for children with all abilities and of all ages. Features include accessible equipment for children with mobility issues, bright colors for the visually impaired and quiet nooks for children with autism. There are elements for smaller children, ages 2-5, and a separate area for those 5-12 years old. Nearby, adults can exercise on the new fitness stations while their children play on the playground. The project also included a new 2,700 square foot splashpad, which opened in April 2017. Biography Once known as the Ocean Avenue Playground, Imagination Playground was transformed in 1995 into one of the Park’s most fanciful and innovative play areas. The $1.5 million renovation included the addition of a dragon sculpture water feature and a storytelling area centered on a statue of Ezra Jack Keats’ storybook characters Peter and his dog Willie. The playground and its dragon were designed by Alliance landscape architect Christian Zimmerman, and the Keats characters were sculpted by Brooklyn artist Otto Neals. Both men received City of New York Art Commission Excellence in Design awards for their work on this project. Readers of Time Out New York Kids crowned Imagination Playground New York’s best in the magazine’s annual NYC Parents Awards reader poll. From the article: “You’ll notice the absence of standard kiddie fare like seesaws, swings or slides. Instead, Prospect Park’s Imagination Playground encourages inventive play with fixtures like a bronze dragon statue that spews water instead of fire, a sculpture of a boy reading while reaching down to pet his dog, cutout animal masks that kids can set their faces in, and a stage with multiple platforms of different heights for little ones to play on. In the summer, programs including storytelling, plays, music and crafts are available.” This is Level 4: Accessible playgrounds with Transfer Platforms and Ground Level Play Features: Transfer platforms allow children to transfer out of their wheelchairs (if they choose and are able to) onto a play surface to use equipment such as slides and bridges. Ground level play features allow a child who can not transfer out of his/her wheelchair or climb to be able to interact with others in a play environment.

Biography Imagination Playground at Burling Slip, designed by famed architect David Rockwell, is an interactive, transformable space that prompts children to manipulate their environment and create a play space of their own with sand, water and loose parts. With giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric, and crates at their fingertips, children have the potential to build and explore endless possibilities. Imagination Playground addresses a broader spectrum of play needs through opportunities for fantasy and cooperative play, in addition to the traditional running, jumping, and climbing. Kids need to be active on many levels, and they need to exercise their minds as well as their muscles. Research shows that children at the age of eight who have experienced varied and challenging play are considerably better prepared to benefit from ongoing formal education. Imagination Playground at Burling Slip is free and open to the public from 9:00 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. daily, as of Monday, September 17 . Staff is on site during these hours to facilitate play. There is nothing here that is has been adapted for children with disabilities. It is inherently inclusive. Watch Video that explains why it works.
