This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Schoolhouse Manor has the following amenities: conservation area, creative play area, parking, shelter, sledding and walking paths. The shelter is available for rental. Biography The playground is one acre and is an equestrian theme. A sprawling PlayBooster® playstructure and Evos™ playsystem make up the unique play area called Scott’s Play. The playground welcomes children and families of all abilities with innovative play activities like the Sway Fun® glider. An extensive ramping system brings children using mobility devices to the center of the action where they’ll encounter lots of play panels, crawl tunnels, slides and more. Across from the PlayBooster is the Evos playsystem, which has a whole different set of challenges for all abilities. Biography Built in 2019 with features for a wide variety of abilities. Featuring a poured in place rubber surface which allows for safe play for all. Interactive panels designed to allow space for wheelchairs to fit, multiple cozy spaces for sensory relief and a variety of swings (traditional bucket, toddler bucket, adaptive and disc for interactive play). With the goal of having something for everyone the park also features a large net climbing structure designed support children’s development of balance and appropriate risk taking skills. There are bathrooms onsite, benches and an ADA picnic table. For anyone with mobility challenges it is recommended you park on 184th vs. the lower parking lot as the grade is much easier to navigate for this park sits on top of a hill.

The Village of South Elgin and the FUNdation have spent the past three and a half years planning the construction of a regional one-of-a-kind inclusive playground with almost 2 acres of stimulating, thrilling, and fully accessible play, known as the SEBA Park Project. An extensive ramping system brings kids of all abilities to the center of the action, and inclusive playground components like the SwayFun® glider and Roller Table encourage social play among everyone. And with nature-inspired playground components like the Log Steppers, Log Slide, Log Tunnels and more, this playground, designed in partnership with Shane’s Inspiration, delivers a nature adventure in which everyone can participate. Notes SECOR PARK: In 2003, The National Center for Nature Photography opened on the site, rotating exhibits from prominent nature photographers. Additional attractions and amenities include large picnic areas, playing fields, indoor meeting rooms and picnic shelters, and wildlife feedings stations with indoor viewing areas, called Windows on Wildlife. Biography The Phase 1 playground features (which opened in 2018) include: A Rock-N-Raft offers a great way to play with friends while remaining seated; Wide ramps and low hand rails provide easy accessibility up the play structure; sensory wave climber, rings and a hand cycler give kids a chance to use upper body strength to play; slide transfers offer an easy access point to ride down slides, and soft surfacing offers accessibility throughout the play area. The playground’s design is focused around the 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design®, as outlined in Me2®, a program developed in partnership with PlayCore and Utah State University’s Center for Persons with Disabilities. The program provides an overview of why inclusion is so important, helpful research to help stakeholders understand diversity, inclusion, and social equity, and tips for designing inclusive play environments that benefit the whole child, whole environment, and whole community.®

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. There are four accessible playgrounds located throughout the park. 1) Bob White Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter; 2) Buck Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter; 3) Doe Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter and 4) Fawn Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter. Biography SENSES Park is an All-Inclusive Playground that caters to children on the autism spectrum. The structures are separated by space to allow for self-learning, exploration and less intense social play experiences for those on the autism disorder spectrum. A key feature for parents is a perimeter fence, so that children can’t wander or bolt. The inclusive play space is fully accessible for children who use wheelchairs. The park is located in Buenaventura Lakes at the intersection of Florida Parkway and Buenaventura Boulevard. Biography The Sensory Garden Playground is a combination of sensory-integrated playground equipment and amenities along with gardening areas. The 40-acre facility is being developed in four phases. Phase I opened spring 2015. The playground is located in Danada South Park. Accessible, portable washrooms are available onsite for your convenience. Phase I Thanks to the gracious support of donors, Phase I of the Sensory Garden Playground project is complete and opened in spring 2015. Phase I includes the following: 2-5-Year-Old Playground Area Fragrance Garden Paved Pathways Sound Garden Sensory Garden Playground Project Phases II-IV will be completed as funding is secured. These phases will include: 5-12 Year Old Playground Area Art Along the Way (sculptures to be installed Summer 2016) Art Along the Way is a component of the Sensory Garden Playground that will encourage appreciation for art and recreation/play, inspire a spirit of inclusion and imagination for all ages and abilities, as well as foster a welcoming and playful entrance environment for visitors to engage with during their visit. Biography Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities along with the Fairfield County Soil and Water District, the US Natural Resource Conservation Service, the City of Lancaster, the Southeastern Ohio Center for Independent Living, and the Heart of Ohio RC&D created a unique addition to the Lancaster Heritage Trail. The trail has life-sized musical instruments, a boardwalk through a wetland, and an accessible tree house. There are many pictures of both the Sensory Trail and the accessible tree house HERE

Biography The playground features two brightly colored, large climbing structures, swings, a sand table and a zip line, all of which can be accessed by kids of any ability. Centered between the pool and the baseball field at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, the sprawling play area is not fully enclosed, but it is surrounded by walking paths and plenty of grass, providing a safety net for those tots that tend to be runners. Travel and adventure is the theme of the new playground. The smaller of the two play structures is designed to look like a whimsical train. The rubber padded play-space is for the younger set, featuring tunnels, slides and low climbing walls at each train section, all connected by bridges. The larger play area resembles an airport tower, complete with an orange windsock fluttering from the top. A modern merry-go-round, a tall curved slide, a rope web, monkey bars and, a perenial playground favorite roller slide offer plenty to explore, but the real gem of this spot is the zip line. The second zip line features an accessible seat with a safety bar, so that anyone can enjoy the thrill of the ride.
