This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This playground was built by volunteers from Terasen Gas as part of their annual Community Giving Day. The new playground is aimed at children six and under and is accessible to all young ones regardless of any disability they may have. It features a special, safe sponge surface and a variety of playground equipment including swings, slides, climbing structures and special toys like a giant toy turtle for the kids’ entertainment.

Notes Features: 2 Saucer Swings Double Bench Shark/Dolphin Bouncer Large Ring Spinner Large Climber with Tall Slide and Spinner Large Web Climber Biography Valleyview Park 5-12+ Playground, with recycled tire flooring, is completely accessible allowing children in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility to get right up into the play. There are saucer swings, a large web climber, and a large ring spinner. There is a double bench shark/dolphin bouncer, a large climber with a tall slide and spinner. This playground provides many opportunities for kids who benefit from vestibular motion to spin, swing, and bounce. There is a limited of shade at the park. There are an ample amount of picnic tables and benches in the park area.

Children in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility are able to get right up into the play. There is a climber with a slide and a climbing wall. A house climber with a slide, a space ship climber with a ladder, and the scoop climber are sure to provide great play time. There is a seat bouncer and a motorcycle bouncer, as well as a standing spinner and a bowl spinner. The preschool playground area is completely fenced with two gates that latch so kids can have a lot of safe freedom for play. There is limited shade in the park area but there are two picnic tables with umbrellas. Valleyview Spray Park is typically open from mid-June until Labor Day. Open 9am-9pm June and July, and 9am-7pm August through Heritage Day. This spray park is completely wheelchair accessible, with a concrete ground cover, as long as you don’t mind getting wet! This water park is set up really well for young children. There are multiple spray features. There are a lot of small sprays on the edges of the splash pad and the larger sprayers don’t do anything unexpected. The sprays appear to run continuously during operating hours and there was a staff member who knew first aid. There is limited shade in the spray park itself and a small amount nearby. It would be great to bring along a park umbrella, and a blanket to sit on. There are a couple of picnic tables near the washrooms by the spray park.

Notes South Glenmore Park in Calgary’s southwest is the area surrounding the south side of the Glenmore Reservoir which includes the Weaselhead Natural Area and has numerous trails and pathways, tennis courts, playgrounds and the Variety Spray Park. Park features Picnic area & shelter Playgrounds Spray park Tennis courts Polo field Washrooms (seasonal) Water fountains (seasonal) Bike and hiking trails Sailing school, boat rentals (Glenmore Sailing School) Cross-country skiing Hiking trails Biography It was the first barrier-free spray park in Calgary when it opened in the summer of 2017. The goal of the new space was to increase accessibility and inclusivity for all kids at the park. The playground has Landscape Structure’s equipment that include a Roller Table, Omnispinner, and a post and platform structure with a slide.

Biography The enclosed playground provides a safe and fun venue for blind children, with tactile markers and audible cues to define where they are. The facilities include multi-deck components with wheelchair ramps, accessible swings and ground-level panels, bells and drums, and brightly painted pavement markings. The playground has been designed around an airport theme – a tribute to the first municipal airport, which was located on the site 75 years ago. Play structures include a simulated control tower, runway and emergency fire trucks. A mobility challenge course, a special feature at the site, helps improve the skills of wheelchair users has 18 to 20 different surfaces and challenges for wheelchair users of any age. The components will simulate real-life obstacles like asphalt and gravel surfaces, concrete curbs, inward- and outward-opening doors and small hills. The school has also put in a butterfly garden and continue to look for ways to beautify their outdoors. Biography This innovative, barrier-free play space invites people of all ages and abilities to play and explore together, in a public park. Designed as “A River of the Senses” its many ‘islands’ offer distinct play areas that stimulate the senses including touch, scent, sight and hearing. Here’s a sampling of highlights: Adventure Island, sponsored by the Police Retirees of Ontario, Inc., provides numerous gross motor play opportunities (including swings), is fully wheelchair accessible, and is surrounded by rubberized play surfacing, looking like a beach with a few waves washing ashore! Sound Island features hanging & hammer chime panels each measuring approximately 3m wide x 2.5m high; turn the nose on ‘talking Bobs’ to record then play back your own voice in an altered state; twist the vertical poles to create interesting sounds too. Most of the equipment in this area has been custom manufactured for this playground. Touch Island is the place to explore the mosaic wall, Braille play panels, move a marble through a maze, feel the surface below your feet, play at the flower-shaped elevated sand & water tables, use the diggers in the sand pit, and pump water to flow along the trough! Maybe even make some mud! Imagination Island has a wonderful stage … just the right place to do impromptu performances for admiring audiences! Scent Island is planted with lots of wonderful ‘smelly stuff’ to explore with your nose and you don’t even need to bend down! Sniff the centre of the big bold ‘flowers’ and figure out that scent; enjoy the huge butterfly sculptures. Sight Island is the place to try out the ‘human sundial’; admire the patterns of light and shadow cast by the arbours & vines on the textured pathway; enjoy the wood sculptures and trees. Look for some birdhouses too! Mother Nature’s Island is a naturalized area, planted with native plant species, which will mature into an interesting home for lots of critters! Circle of Friends is in the centre of it all, a place to sit and count your blessings, watch the fun, and recognize the many donors who have helped bring our vision to life.
