This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This is the 28th universally accessible and inclusive playground to be developed by Shane’s Inspiration and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The equipment was built by Landscape Structures and features a sea-creatures theme. The playground incorporates some musical elements for kids to engage with. There is plenty of parking and a ton of space for running around. The tot park is separate from the main play equipment. This playground is not fenced. Biography This Shane’s Inspiration playground includes colorful, sensory-rich equipment such as musical instruments, buttons that emit sounds and chime panels, and swings or see-saws with high backs offer support. Canopies over the structures don’t just provide shade, but offer protection to those sensitive to heat or light because of medication. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography This playground opened in 1956. Construction started in 1952 and was the brainchild of Archer Garner and Hank Ketcham, the creator of the famous Dennis The Menace comic strip. While the playground is not 100% accessible, much of it is and it includes a quiet area in the form of a maze. The playground has been updated several times since it opened and new inclusive play pieces have been added. While much of the original playground still exists, there are a lot of opportunities for inclusive play. The playground has many benches for parents to supervise and is fenced all around. This playground was ahead of its time and is a definite favorite among local children. Biography A park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, is home to a PlayBooster® Vibe® that looks like a piece of art. Even more special, it’s an inclusive playground where kids of all abilities, ages 5 to 12, can come together to play, learn and grow. This playstructure artfully packs a lot of play experiences into a small space, including the ever-popular Saddle Spinners, Loop Arch Climber and Pod Climber®. Additionally, lots of accessible panels like the Color Splash Panel™, Marble Panel®, and Xylofun Panel® offer a sensory-rich visual, auditory and tactile play experience. Biography This project touched the hearts of many, as public, private, and faith-based organizations from Choctaw as well as surrounding communities came together to make the initial phases a reality. Phase I of this $610,000 playground/park was constructed by a community of 300 volunteers in October 2004. This phase provided a school aged structure with a variety of slides, climbers, monkey bars, panels, bridges, spinners and a space net climber. Phase II was completed in September 2006, adding two banks of swings, a basketball court, sidewalks and sod, resurfacing the concrete play area with asphalt, and addressing drainage issues. Phase III was completed in October, 2009 adding a Sway Fun and EVOS climbing structure which are Landscape Structures‘ equipment.

Biography Dylan Park is home to a brightly colored PlayBooster® playstructure featuring a wide range of inclusive play activities and extensive ramping inviting all to play. Children of all ages and abilities are able to engage in endless sensory-rich play on multiple play components including the Sway Fun® Glider, Rollerslide and OmniSpin® Spinner. The Cascade Climber and a Sensory Play Center® challenge little bodies and growing minds. Several CoolToppers® shade products help keep the play environment cooler and protect against the sun’s rays. Biography The playground opened in 2014. Some of the features of this Landscape Structure’s playground include: an OmniSpin Spinner, a We-saw with back support, roller slides, bouncers, inclusive swings, several sensory panels and monkey bars. A basketball court and tennis court are also on site. The playground is recommended for children ages 2-12 years old.

Biography Built by the local Rotary, this sprawling PlayBooster® playsystem is inclusive for all abilities. Poured-in-place safety surfacing allows for easy accessibility to the structure and an extensive ramping system takes kids right to the heart of the action. Lots of play components welcome all ages and abilities including the Sway Fun® Glider. Playground equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and was built by General Recreation.

Notes The park features: colorful slides tubes bridges adapted swings interactive puzzles a quiet area a dragon mister a Sway Fun Biography Children with and without special needs are invited to the Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital. This bright and safe play area provides children with integrated play opportunities through specially-designed playground equipment with sensory features. Opened in February 2008, the Playground accommodates children with wheelchairs, leg braces, crutches and other barriers that would otherwise leave them confined to the sidelines at traditional playgrounds. The Playground provides a colorful, safe and stimulating outdoor haven for children in the community — regardless of their physical limits — to come together, play and learn from each other. The nearly half-acre play area features special equipment in a modern and creative environment. The Playground has sturdy foam ground cover to protect children from falls and yet is wheelchair-friendly. The park features a wonderland of brightly colored slides, tubes, bridges, swings, interactive puzzles, a quiet area and lush landscaping for children ages 2 to 12. A water feature shoots columns of water up from the ground while a whimsical blue-eyed red dragon puffs clouds of mist down toward children, which is especially useful on hot days. A gently sloping ramp includes motion sensors that, when triggered, set off musical chimes. Through a joint-use agreement with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the playground is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (except holidays), with maintenance and security provided by the city. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground done in collaboration with RecWest Outdoor Products. Special Saturday Play Dates Hosted by Support Groups The Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital offers free Saturday “Play Dates” with coordinated activities including face painting, arts and crafts, entertainment, and treats (but please feel free to bring a sack lunch). LAOH support groups Las Niñas and Juniors/Pinafores host these events that offer members opportunities to volunteer.

Notes Features: Tot area Mini Climbing Wall Musical Instruments Sensory Wall Splash Fountain Carousel Biography This extraordinary playground has a carousel theme. The playground includes a tot lot for smaller children, an older children’s play area with a mini climbing wall and slide, and drums to beat and bells to ring. The Century Wall that has sounds and a panel on the floor so you can play music with your feet. This unique playground was made by Landscape Structures and Coast Recreation. The area has a splash fountain and a carousel for children. The park also includes handicap accessible rental paddle boats.
