This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Tread Town’s foundation was constructed from recycled rubber including approximately 400 recycled tires, creating a universally accessible surface that allows children and caregivers with and without disabilities to navigate the playground freely and safely. The playground promotes inclusive, unstructured play with ramped wheelchair access to the highest platforms, and features an exclusive Tread Town tire swing, state-of-the art solid harness swings for children who need additional back support, and a multitude of other cutting-edge fitness and educational-based activities. This Boundless™ Playground was built with funding in part from the American Tire Distributors, Inc. Note: A portion of the surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Davie Park includes an impressive playground that is securely fenced in. The rubberized surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The equipment includes many different play structures and even a castle! There are many opportunities for dramatic play at this playground in the castle and with built-in puppet theaters. Sensory equipment includes, swinging bridges and a moving barrel to balance on. There are traditional swings as well as an adapted swing on the playground. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Biography Playground opened in June 2016. It includes a ramped structure with an Aeroglider, slides, and play panels. Ground based play includes accessible swing seats, a Unity Dome and a Teeter Tunnel. There is also a Liberty Swing. This is one of 30 playgrounds that Trillium Health helped to fund.

Biography The playground, a project of Playworld Systems, includes a Aeroglider, a ramped structure, sensory activities, large climbing webs, quiet areas, accessible swing seats, a large sand area, wheelchair swing, a huge hill slide and more. It was a community build with KaBOOM! The Wheelchair Swing is locked to avoid any damage to it. There is a phone number on the swing to call if you want to use it. A parks staff person will come and unlock it for you and will stay at the playground as long as you want to play. When you are done, they will lock it back up. NOTE: One section of the playground has wood mulch (EWF) as surfacing which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground. The hill slide has a fairly steep slope up to the top, but that does not seem to stop people using wheelchairs to get up to slide.
