This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground opened in 2016. It includes a ramped structure and a variety of types of swings. The surfacing appears to be sand which may make it more difficult for people using a wheelchair to maneuver throughout the playground.

This carpeted playground has a large play structure with an airplane theme, but the best part of the playground are all of the ground level play activities that provide great vestibular motion. There is an accessible swing, a 4 person see-saw, a 2 person airplane rocker, and a tea cup spinner. There is good shade in the play area and there is a flat grassy area nearby.

Notes Bellevue Park is Sault Ste. Marie’s main passive park. It is 17 hectares in size and offers a large playground area, 2.4 kilometres of asphalt walkway, multiple floral beds and a display greenhouse which is open to the general public. Biography The playground which opened in July 2016 includes outdoor musical instruments like a drum, ‘metallophone’, and chimes, designs and shapes designed to enhance tactile sensations, a ‘cozy dome’ cave that lets over-stimulated children have a quieter playing space, and several other “of the newest” climbing and spinning devices.

Biography Located right on the lake, this huge Ajax park is a great place to spend the day. It has two unique play structures — one for big kids and one for preschoolers. Both are fully accessible, and so is the large splash pad. The park also boasts a pavilion with washrooms and a concession stand. There are tables and chairs for picnics, big trees that provide shady spots and plenty of green space for burning off energy.

Biography The park equipment includes a rotating net, arch swing, wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, see-saw, diggers and spinners. Due to its location just south of the Courtenay Airpark, the Rotary Skypark has an airplane theme, with an airplane climber, and a gazebo that kids can pretend is their very own air-traffic control tower.

Biography This playground for children in grades K-3 was built by Circle K volunteers. Children in the school helped design the playground which is a Landscape Structures and Habitat Systems Playground. Notes Features: Large Climbing Structure 2 Ramps Slide Rock Wall Ladder Bridge Dinosaur Climber 4 Seater Wobbler 2 Bowl Spinners 2 Swings 2 Infant Swings Biography St. Andrews Heights Playground features a large climbing structure with a slide, ramps, a rock wall, and a ladder bridge. There is a dinosaur climber, a 4 seater wobbler, and 2 bowl spinners. There are 4 swings, two of which are infant swings. The recycled tire flooring allows accessibility right up into the play and in a few places, you can go under and through. There are two ramps to the first level of the play structure so you can ride around in a loop. The swings and bowl spinners are great for kids who benefit from vestibular motion. Although this is a community playground, it is next to a school and will be used by the children at the school during recess and lunch. The park area is fenced but has a couple of ungated exits. There is some shade offered at the playground by a few large trees. There are 4 benches and a picnic table to provide seating.

Notes Biography The Teresa Cameron playground is the heart of PlayRights mission. The playground originally conceived by local Kiwanians was over 15 years in the making. Over 150 community volunteers participated in the four day build for this project. Features include: concrete sidewalk attaching the playground borders to existing paved walking trails and parking at the nearby community centre. The playground also feature 45% rubberized surface, with the Remaining base comprised of Fibar. Multiple ramps over accessible entry on the equipment from both the north and south sides. There are also staged transfer points along the length of the main component. A tapered rockwall leads to multiple sensory panels including musical instruments, colour wheels, and Braille panels. This playground also features a “rolling” boat apparatus, and a climbing netplex component. Also included at this site is a separate structure specifically designed for 18 month to 4 year olds. This project was made possible by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Kiwanis Club of Ingersoll, Amico Infrastructures, Ingersoll Community Foundation, and the town of Ingersoll.

Notes This playground and spray park are part of the huge Chinook Winds Regional Park complex. The park area is still being developed. There is currently a skate park, a number of baseball diamonds and a hockey rink with boards that contains basketball courts in the warmer months. A seasonal concession with washrooms is opening this summer (2012) located between the spray park and playground. Biography This playground features preschool structure with steering wheel and double slide; school-age structure with slide and climbing wall; wave balance beam; 2 bowl spinners; tri-motorcycle bouncer; 4 swings (2 saucer swings); 2 stand spinners; large ring spinner; surf board. The ground floor of this playground is completely accessible. Although there is nothing that could be directly accessed from a wheelchair, you could get right up to the play on all items. There are also many items that could be accessed by people who could be transferred or just had low motor skills. There are many things that swing, spin or bounce for children who benefit from those types of vestibular motion. The large school-aged climber has stairs so older children with low motor skills could still get to the top. The sprayground features: many small sprays; two water cannons; 2 tall water dumping towers; musical piano sprayer; hoop sprayer.

Biography This playground was built in 2018 as a partnership between the communities of Thorncliffe, Greenview, Variety Club Alberta, volunteers from the Rotary Club, Parks Foundation Calgary, and the City of Calgary. It features assessible parking, pathway access, shaded assessible table seating, pour in place rubber surfacing, partial fencing from roads, a tandem assessible zip line, assessible spring teeter, rotating rope climber, musical instruments, ramped multi play unit, enclosure seat, saucer swing, assessible tandem swing, standard belt and baby swings, standard height and lower height bench seating. Assessible washrooms are available to the public in the community center building. Rocks and ornamental grasses were added to the perimeter to enhance the natural aspect of the playground. Sincere effort was made to make this playground as inclusive as possible.
