This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This is Family Fitness and Fun Park built by American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in partnership with KaBOOM! There is equipment for balance, flexibility, strength and a walking/running track for aerobic exercise. In the middle of the Park there is a safe, accessible playground. The various activities of the Park help reduce and prevent falls, build strong bones and give those recovering from joint replacement a safe place to exercise. The different stations will include descriptions of how to do the exercises, why they are important and injury prevention tips. This is truly a place where three generations — children, parents and grandparents — can get fit and have fun together!

The park has a paved walking trail perfect for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers. There are paved paths that lead from the parking areas to the wooded, mulched playground. The playground includes two adapted swings as well as typical and baby swings. The climbing structure is accessible via ramp and includes slides and tunnels. There are bathrooms located beside the playground. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Notes Park includes: baseball / softball basketball court benches grill large play field pavilion picnic tables playground restrooms softball field tennis court(s) volleyball Biography A new, fully accessible, 1.2-acre playground was built at Patriarche Park with the help of hundreds of community volunteers in 2014. The Playground in the Park “Re-Imagined” project was the result of a great partnership between the City of East Lansing and the Rotary Club of East Lansing; and could not have been built without the tremendous support of the community. There are trees to climb and swings to fly on, and garden seating for adults still is in the works. The 1.2-acre playground is handicap accessible, has a rubberized play surface, walkways and a rain garden.

The first stage was a swinging area which includes a variety of accessible and adapted swings. The second stage was the development of the 1900 sq. ft Splash Pad with 26 different activities. The John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground (SNAP) Splash Pad of Morgan County was recognized by Aquatics International magazine the as “Best of Aquatics” facility for 2011. The third phase includes restrooms, a grand entrance, and a pavilion with picnic tables. The forth and final phase is a 9600 sq. ft ramped playground which opened in 2016.

Biography The local Rotary raised the money for the playground which opened in 2005. They then raised additional money for a splash pad which opened in 2012. In addition to the playground, there are walking trails and The Wetlands Bridge, which won the Accessibility Enhancement Award by the Coalition of Recreational Trails in 2008.

Notes Park setting Completely fenced Toddler area 5-12 year old area Combination surfacing Biography Jonathan’s Dream was one of the first inclusive playgrounds created in the United States. It lead to the creation of Boundless Playgrounds a non-profit organization (now closed) that helped create over 100 accessible playgrounds throughout the United States. Jonathan’s Dream is located less than four miles from downtown Hartford at the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. From the city, follow Route 44/Albany Avenue West, then make a slight right onto Bloomfield Avenue/CT Route 189. Jonathan’s Dream will be on your left. The sign for the playground is small, so watch for the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center entrance sign, then follow smaller signs that lead to ample free playground parking. NOTE: The surfacing is a combination of Pour-in-Place and wood mulch (EWF) and as a result maybe difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver around the playground. Notes The Miracle League Park is a regional complex with the world’s largest rubberized ball field for children and adults with physical disabilities. The facility also has a playground with 28 different pieces of equipment, each one being handicap accessible. The purpose of this park is to remove those barriers that keep children and adults with disabilities from experiencing the opportunity and sheer joy of playing the childhood games we all have enjoyed over our lifetimes. The field is capable of being used for baseball, soccer, basketball and flag football, with other sports to be added later, as needed. Currently, we host Spring and Fall leagues for both children and adults. Other amenities include: A full sized concession stand Restrooms A quiet room for children with autism Biography The inclusive playground features a playstructure with an extensive ramping system in addition to many inclusive playground components like the Rollerslide, Sway Fun® glider and multiple activity panels. An Evos® playsystem was also included in the design to deliver more climbing and sliding opportunities for kids of all abilities. Even more, the Sensory Play Center®, OmniSpin® Spinner, Roller Table, Cozy Dome®, We-saw™, Oodle® Swing and many more freestanding play components were added to the design to encourage interactive play among children of all abilities. Biography Surrounded by palm trees and a rubber play surface, a new play park on the Oceanfront features cameras where visitors can look out into the water and view surfers or dolphins. It also has musical drums, a playground with monkey bars and slides, a boardwalk that leads out to the water and a sensory wall for the autistic and visually impaired. The playground equipment comes from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on the project was Sparks@Play. There are three paths that take you near the water where you help build sand castles with sand scoops. Beach wheelchairs will be available. There are shaded as well as sun areas for you to hang out. There is a long, gently-inclined ramp that leads to a “lookout” deck six feet above the ground. The deck has room for four wheelchairs, as well as several accessible telescopes. It provides a bird’s-eye view of the park, beach, and ocean that who use wheelchairs rarely get to see. This unique play space has an extensive ramping system to take children using mobility devices to the center of the action. Some of the components included are the Sway Fun®, a Sensory Play Center™, accessible cyclers, various climbers and slides.
