This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground facilitates wheelchair accessibility with wide ramps, cushioned rubberized pathways for safety, and swings with high backing for stabilized support. They have also reconstructed the sidewalk around so that it is entirely inclined, allowing wheelchairs easy entry. In addition, the park features colorful musical instruments such as drums and sound pads on the ground, that play different noises when touch activated.

Biography This is a conceptual plan of the Hope Park. It was built in 2013 by community volunteers over the span of a week. The playground is completely fenced. There is a toddler area as well as a 5-12 year old area. There are swings in both areas that include adapted swing seats. This is a Leathers and Associates designed and built playground. The playground includes a bird nest swing and sensory wall. The surfacing is pour-in-place

Biography The playground has a Smith Rock theme and includes 10 slides and parallel zip lines for children with and without disabilities. There is a 5-12 year old area and a 3-5 year old area. There are even a few pieces of equipment designed for toddlers. There is a group swing as well as accessible swing seats, belt seats, and toddler seats. Other equipment includes: an accessible glider, basketball hoops, two ramped structures, climbing rocks and much more. Sidewalks are 8 feet across, wide enough so that two wheelchairs can be operated next to each another. And the entire playground area has a soft surface. An inclusive wheelchair whirl was added to the playground in 2017.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s Playground opened in 2014. Kids of all ages and abilities can go under the sea at this playground. This park delivers yellow submarine- and sealife-themed PlayBooster® play structures that are fully inclusive with ramps, the Sway Fun® glider, Roller Table, Cozy Dome® and lots of sensory-rich activity panels. Notes Huckleberry Park is located at Highway 61 South and Huckleberry Drive. It consists of 63 acres of rolling hills, wooded areas, a pond and scenic natural views. Amenities include two rentable shelters. Shelter #1 has electricity, shelter #2 does not. Park also has picnic tables, benches, an 18-hole disc golf course, 4 non-lighted tennis courts, half-court basketball, 2 outdoor racquetball courts, 1 lighted softball field, Hannibal Ramp Park, nature trails and restrooms next to the main shelter Biography The playground includes: Omni Spinner Oodle Swing Musical Instruments Module Structures Swings (Belt seats and accessible swing seat) There is an orientation path around the entire playground. The surfacing in engineered wood fiber which might make it more difficult for some people to maneuver throughout the playground.

Click here for a printable key request form Biography Trillium Health Resources has awarded New Hanover County Parks and Gardens with a $750,000 Play Together Grant which will go towards constructing an inclusive playground at Hugh MacRae Park. The new playground which opened in 2016 provides inclusive play opportunities for children with all abilities and of all ages. Features include accessible equipment for children with mobility issues, bright colors for the visually impaired and quiet nooks for children with autism. There are elements for smaller children, ages 2-5, and a separate area for those 5-12 years old. Nearby, adults can exercise on the new fitness stations while their children play on the playground. The project also included a new 2,700 square foot splashpad, which opened in April 2017. Notes Ke’Opuolani Regional Park composes of 110 acres with 85 acres of the park developed and is the largest park in the County of Maui parks system. The park is centrally located in Central Maui and is adjacent to the world renowned Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The War Memorial Complex the site of the annual Maui County Fair, home of the 2001 Hula Bowl and numerous sports activities is located across the street. Also adjacent to Ke’Opuolani Regional Park along Kanaloa Drive is the Maui YMCA complex and the Central Maui Building of the Boys and Girls Club of America. Biography The playground features pavilions, swings, jungle gyms, a mini climbing wall and rubberized surfaces for safe play.

Notes Park Features: 55 acres Picnic shelters and tables Playground 2 Softball Fields 1.5-mile nature trail Biography Idelwild Park includes a large playground with widely spaced equipment. The rubberized surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The climbers include a ramp allowing wheelchairs access to some of the climbing equipment. There is a variety of sensory equipment including tubes and sensory panels. There is also an assortment of monkey bars perfect for building arm strength. The park includes both traditional and an adapted swing. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Biography Once known as the Ocean Avenue Playground, Imagination Playground was transformed in 1995 into one of the Park’s most fanciful and innovative play areas. The $1.5 million renovation included the addition of a dragon sculpture water feature and a storytelling area centered on a statue of Ezra Jack Keats’ storybook characters Peter and his dog Willie. The playground and its dragon were designed by Alliance landscape architect Christian Zimmerman, and the Keats characters were sculpted by Brooklyn artist Otto Neals. Both men received City of New York Art Commission Excellence in Design awards for their work on this project. Readers of Time Out New York Kids crowned Imagination Playground New York’s best in the magazine’s annual NYC Parents Awards reader poll. From the article: “You’ll notice the absence of standard kiddie fare like seesaws, swings or slides. Instead, Prospect Park’s Imagination Playground encourages inventive play with fixtures like a bronze dragon statue that spews water instead of fire, a sculpture of a boy reading while reaching down to pet his dog, cutout animal masks that kids can set their faces in, and a stage with multiple platforms of different heights for little ones to play on. In the summer, programs including storytelling, plays, music and crafts are available.” This is Level 4: Accessible playgrounds with Transfer Platforms and Ground Level Play Features: Transfer platforms allow children to transfer out of their wheelchairs (if they choose and are able to) onto a play surface to use equipment such as slides and bridges. Ground level play features allow a child who can not transfer out of his/her wheelchair or climb to be able to interact with others in a play environment.

Biography Imagination Playground at Burling Slip, designed by famed architect David Rockwell, is an interactive, transformable space that prompts children to manipulate their environment and create a play space of their own with sand, water and loose parts. With giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric, and crates at their fingertips, children have the potential to build and explore endless possibilities. Imagination Playground addresses a broader spectrum of play needs through opportunities for fantasy and cooperative play, in addition to the traditional running, jumping, and climbing. Kids need to be active on many levels, and they need to exercise their minds as well as their muscles. Research shows that children at the age of eight who have experienced varied and challenging play are considerably better prepared to benefit from ongoing formal education. Imagination Playground at Burling Slip is free and open to the public from 9:00 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. daily, as of Monday, September 17 . Staff is on site during these hours to facilitate play. Biography Open daily, 10am – 3pm, except holidays and holiday weekends. A $1 donation per child is suggested; train rides cost 50 cents and are offered Monday – Friday at 11:30am and 1:30pm. The playground is filled with swings, slides, see saws, sand boxes, fantasy play houses, miniature golf, an activity center, picnic areas and accessible rest rooms. The facility is easily accessible by taking I-95 to Route 117 (West). Look for our sign on your right at the second light. Contest winner is a sign of success

It has double wide ramps so wheel chairs can pass each other, all steel design, GTImpax Turf which is a synthetic turf safety surfacing. It has a 12′ fall height meaning it protects kids from broken bones and concussions if they (God forbid) fall from the e It has ADA swings too. Everything is in a natural color scheme that blends with the Historic Kennedy Park landscape which is an Olmstead Park.

Biography Playground which opened in 2014 includes: Water Play Area Wheelchair platform swings Sand Pit Accessible fishing dock Village: A village of four tent structures provides unique experiences for children to explore. Each structure houses a different children’s activity. Living Willow Hut– This hut is open on both ends to allow easy walkthrough. Children in wheelchairs are able to access the hut on a trail. Rock Pile–Children can climb a small rock pile to simulate rock climbing. The pile is a gradual incline. Hill Slide Sled Hill Stage Tree House–The playground has its very own tree house with different levels easily accessible by ramps. Bamboo Maze–Get lost in a maze of bamboo during the summer months. Each year, the design will change. Playground Hours Monday – Saturday 10am – 8pm Sunday Noon – 8pm The playground has a daily admission fee.
