This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes As you would expect Central Park has tons of activities to explore: Baseball Fields Basketball Courts Bathrooms Bicycling and Greenways Dog-friendly Areas Eateries Fishing Fitness Equipment Handball Courts Historic Houses Horseback Riding Trails Ice Skating Rinks Nature Centers Paddleboat Rentals Playgrounds Pools Recreation Centers Soccer Fields Spray Showers Tennis Courts Volleyball Courts Water Fountains Zoos and Aquariums Biography This is a LEVEL 2 (as designated by NYC Parks) accessible playground which can include accessible swings and/or ramped play equipment, transfer platforms, and ground level play features. These playgrounds can also include accessible amenities, which can include drinking fountains and comfort stations. All NYC playgrounds have pour-in-place rubber or tiles for surfacing. This playground does have an adapted swing seat. The oldest playground in Central Park, and the largest at 1.8 acres, Heckscher Playground includes a great variety of play features and spaces. Its primary entrance is the central breezeway of the newly updated Heckscher Building. Features: The playground includes a shaded area with swings and slides; a multiuse area comprised of synthetic turf and safety surfacing; and a large, maze-like climber and water feature with tunnels, ramps and slides. Water Feature: Water flows from the highest point of the climber and down to elevated water channels, which children can walk through. The water ends at ground level in an area where a variety of water jets spray into the air. Younger children can cool off in a semi-enclosed area with a low and gentle spray. Recent Reconstruction: The Central Park Conservancy reconstructed Heckscher Playground in 2005 and the Heckscher Building in 2007 Nearest bathroom: Located inside the Heckscher Building, which features separate entrances for playground users and the general public.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. The playground is located across Park Drive from accessible Office and accessible Cabin #17 and #20.

Biography There is a tiny tot area for those who are just crawling or learning to walk, a medium sized area for preschool age tots and a larger play structure for the more experienced climbers. The giant rope sphere is the highlight of the playground. There are also two baby bucket swigs as well as a super cool giant disc swing (see photos.) And to top it all off, the entire playground has the soft, cushy floor we parents all love. The Hippo Playground Project is an all-volunteer, community based organization that works in conjunction with the Riverside Park Fund (a 501(c)(3) organization) and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to maintain the playground and provide free activities for the community. For over 25 years, The Hippo Playground Project has improved and maintained equipment and provided free activities for one of the Upper West Side’s favorite playgrounds. The popularity of the playground is a testament to the amazing care and concern the neighborhood has for one of its treasures. See pictures

Biography Located on the grounds of Hollis Elementary School, this public playground houses a variety of smooth plastic structures for kids to climb over, through and around. It is right off Washington Street, but enclosed by a sturdy fence. There are bucket swing seats and a Sway Fun Glider. Benches are also strategically located for parents to watch their kids play. Parking is available in the school’s lot. The surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Notes Park Includes: outdoor swimming pool with changing facilities softball and soccer fields lacrosse and ball hockey courts a playground and community garden. A lot of parking is available from 148th Street. Biography It includes climbing structures and play equipment which cater to a variety of needs and abilities for both younger and older children. The playground includes a short walking track inspired by video games. Kids will pass through the power up area and gain points as they pass over medallions, adding their scores as the go. The playground benches have additional space to the side for walkers, strollers and wheelchairs.

Biography The playground facilitates wheelchair accessibility with wide ramps, cushioned rubberized pathways for safety, and swings with high backing for stabilized support. They have also reconstructed the sidewalk around so that it is entirely inclined, allowing wheelchairs easy entry. In addition, the park features colorful musical instruments such as drums and sound pads on the ground, that play different noises when touch activated.

Biography This is a conceptual plan of the Hope Park. It was built in 2013 by community volunteers over the span of a week. The playground is completely fenced. There is a toddler area as well as a 5-12 year old area. There are swings in both areas that include adapted swing seats. This is a Leathers and Associates designed and built playground. The playground includes a bird nest swing and sensory wall. The surfacing is pour-in-place

Biography The playground has a Smith Rock theme and includes 10 slides and parallel zip lines for children with and without disabilities. There is a 5-12 year old area and a 3-5 year old area. There are even a few pieces of equipment designed for toddlers. There is a group swing as well as accessible swing seats, belt seats, and toddler seats. Other equipment includes: an accessible glider, basketball hoops, two ramped structures, climbing rocks and much more. Sidewalks are 8 feet across, wide enough so that two wheelchairs can be operated next to each another. And the entire playground area has a soft surface. An inclusive wheelchair whirl was added to the playground in 2017.
