This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground that opened in September 2022 includes a 2-5-year-old and 5-12 year old areas. Both areas have ramped structures with sensory pieces. The playground includes a group swing, an accessible glider, and an accessible whirl. The playground includes sensory play pieces for children, spaces for solitude, wide ramps for wheelchairs to easily accompany youth onto pieces, diverse seating options allowing wheelchairs or walkers to easily access, safe and soft flooring for transition from piece to piece seamless and safe, and versatile pieces that allow individuals with or without upper/lower mobility to still experience the play features. Winding paths and ramps are integrated into the design; chair swings are side-by-side with traditional-style swings; varied surfacing on walkways provides textural cues; and lush landscaping appeals to the senses of sight, touch and smell. Restroom facilities include adult-size changing tables and extra room for wheelchairs and strollers. Combining Play with the Natural Environment Kids Together Playground could be described as “a playground in a garden” or “a garden in a playground”. The extensive use of landscaping features – trees, plants and rolling hills – makes Kids Together Playground unique and inviting for all generations of visitors at all times of the year. Plants at KTP have been specially chosen to be child-friendly, with a stimulating variety of colors, textures and fragrances. Plants provide natural materials – leaves, sticks, seeds and flowers – that can be used in creative and imaginative play. Art for Play As Kids Together raised funds for playground construction, another community group, Cary Visual Art, joined the effort by commissioning and funding artwork for Kids Together Playground. This added dimension was the perfect complement and brought even greater opportunities for kids to explore creative and imaginative play. By expressing their interest and commitment during the design phase, Cary Visual Art was able to work with our design team to reserve spaces for functional art. KATAL – by William Moore, Pittsboro, NC This multi-piece sculpture invites children of all ages to climb aboard. There’s an especially cozy spot in the curl of KATAL’s tail! CVA held a contest for children to name the sculpture and KATAL was born, as an acronym for Kids Are Together At Last. Many children identify KTP as “the Dragon Park”. This wonderful sculpture also inspired the Kids Together mascot. Oracle Benches and Dinosaur Bench – by Jim Gallucci, Greensboro, NC The oracle bench invites interactive fun – whisper into one trumpet-shaped tube, and your friend on the other end can hear you! It’s designed so wheelchair-users can play, too. The bright purple dinosaur bench adds color and a resting place near the toddler swings. Botanical Benches – by Rodney Carroll, Baltimore, MD Giant, aluminum leaves decorate these four benches, each one accurately representing the leaves of a different tree – gingko, sassafras, redbud and tulip poplar. The rubberized surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The larger of the two climbing structures is equipped with a ramp, making slides and tubes accessible. Sensory equipment includes tubes and a collection of ride-on bouncy animals. The sandpit contains different types of diggers. One digger is accessible from the grass on the edge of the sandpit. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. The playground is a wonderful inclusive play area with equipment to meet many developmental levels. The playground surface is a rubberized material great for wheelchairs and walkers. The climber includes a ramp and a variety of sensory equipment such as a sensory panel that makes noise, spins around, and includes various textures. There is also a whistle that is played by pulling a lever. The playground also includes a wheelchair accessible water table, spinning solar system sensory table, bouncy car, and dinosaur slide. The park includes both typical and adapted swings and elevated garden beds. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. Biography Designed as a Boundless Playground, the playground equipment is designed for 2 to 5-year-olds and 5 to 12-year-olds. It includes a play structure with a ramp wide enough for mobility devices. You’ll find accessible swings, along with traditional belt and bucket swings. And there also are a variety of drums and other noise-making play pieces. The surface under all of the equipment is rubber matting.

The larger playground is modeled after a racetrack complete with cars and road! The rubberized playground surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The larger of the two playgrounds is divided into ages 2-5 and 5-12. Special care was taking in designing this playground in order to include a wide variety of textures and materials. Sensory equipment includes musical instruments, various moving bridges, and sensory wheels. The park also includes a large number of adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Located behind the nature center is a wooded playground with musical equipment, a sandpit, a fort building area, and a tree house. Accessing this playground requires traveling down a wooded path but the sensory experience makes it worth the effort. The $2.3 million project is seven years in the making and designed to be a place where children of all abilities can play side by side. You’ll find a variety of pieces that are built with kids with mobility or strength issues and other disorders in mind. They will allow all kids to be incorporated into play across the 3.5-acre playground – the largest in Raleigh. The pieces are definitely spread out. If your children are young or if they could run off, this isn’t a playground where you can hunker down on a bench and read a book. There are some fences around the perimeter – but not all of the way around. But it’s definitely a place families will spend hours at for years to come. Here are 14 things to look out for when you go: Wide Decking: The massive main play structure features lots of wide decking so kids in wheelchairs and walkers can get in on the play. Handicapped Accessible Picnic Tables: Instead of being stuck at the end of the table, people in wheelchairs can sit with everybody else in these specially designed picnic tables. The tables will sit on one side of the playground in three small picnic shelters, which also are designed to offer a quiet, cozy place for kids with sensory issues to take a break. Equipment Accessed from Ground Level: This play piece and others are examples of play equipment that can be accessed from the ground level instead of climbing or rolling up onto above ground decking that’s mostly found at traditional playgrounds. Notes Municipal Park is a diversified 18-acre community park with entrances on both Commerce Drive and Main Street Extension. The park’s amenities include a Recreation Center, multi-use fields, a picnic pavilion, tennis courts, a basketball court, skateboarding park, a playground, small picnic shelters, a .66 mile fitness/nature trail, and a concessions/restrooms building. Biography Playground which opened in September 2016 includes a Liberty Swing.

Biography The playground which opened September 2016, is located at Swinson Park, located off of Swinson Park Road near Morehead Primary School in Morehead City. It includes a Liberty Swing, adaptive swings, zip line with adaptive seating, shading, sensory slides, and tandem slides. A portion of the surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for people using mobility devises to maneuver around the playground.
