This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

The ground cover is recycled tire flooring and is completely accessible allowing kids in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility to get right up into the play. The preschool climber features an old west theme which provides ample opportunities for imaginative play. There is a slide and bridges with room for a wheelchair to move around at the ground level. There is a saucer swing and a small merry-go-round spinner. There are a number of features that spin or swing for children who benefit from vestibular motion. The school-aged climber has ramps that ascend 3 levels with panels, a canopy and a room to turn around at each level. There is also a musical panel on the ground level. There are slides and a flying fox. There is a standing spinner, and a small merry-go-round spinner that can be used by people who were able to be transferred. There is a saucer swing, a regular swing and a baby swing. Street parking is available however payment is required. There are benches and picnic tables near the playground. The trees in the park are young so there is not much shade.

Notes Park Includes: outdoor swimming pool with changing facilities softball and soccer fields lacrosse and ball hockey courts a playground and community garden. A lot of parking is available from 148th Street. Biography It includes climbing structures and play equipment which cater to a variety of needs and abilities for both younger and older children. The playground includes a short walking track inspired by video games. Kids will pass through the power up area and gain points as they pass over medallions, adding their scores as the go. The playground benches have additional space to the side for walkers, strollers and wheelchairs.

Biography The Jumpstart Inclusive Playground at Earl Bales Park in Toronto is over 16,000 sq feet of inclusive, accessible play space. The Playground features rubber surfacing flat to the curbing, to provide east access for all mobility devices from surrounding pathways. This playground goes far beyond basic accessibility standards. The playground structure itself has double-wide ramps throughout, allowing multiple mobility devices to be able to access and move in any direction without issue. The Playground features a ton of other key accessible features – some include: – Roller Slide: removes static electricity so that children with hearing aid devices can participate in sliding – Transfer Benches: found at the bottom of most slides to provide children with a spot to either transfer back into their mobility device or take a breath without tons of kids sliding behind them – Low Entry Elements: the Omnispin, We-Saw, Hexaplex, etc have low and easy entry points – Sensory Elements: a sensory wall & other sensory boards throughout the space – Education Panels: normalizing all abilities teaching about ASL & Braille and highlighting kids of all abilities in art throughout – 5 Kinds of Swings: Standard belt swing, bucket swings with harness for core stability, baby bucket swings, a saucer swing & double friendship swing – Cozy Dome: A place to retreat to for kids that may be feeling over stimulated – Sway Fun: A rocking element that can be boarded by both wheelchair users and non-wheelchair users alike – Music Zone: lots of musical instruments with different vibrations and sounds for stimulation There are bathrooms in the Earl Bales Community Centre a short walk from the playground, and a splash pad/sensory garden right next to the playground.

Notes King George/Cambie Community Park is a large 30 acres park in East Richmond and offers various amenities including an artificial turf field, spray/waterplay, community garden, and a picnic area. This sports oriented community park has many opportunities for outdoor play including 5 sports fields 4 ball diamonds, 3 basketball courts, 3 tennis courts and spectator bleachers. The King George Park artificial turf field opened in September 2008 and provides a top-rate playing surface for all field sports groups. In addition to the the sports amenities in the park, there is a themed waterplay area with geysers, spray toys and more. This spray park opens the week of July 1 and closes after Labour Day, or as weather permits. In extreme dry summers, the waterplay area may be closed for water conservation purposes. Near the waterplay area is the “Gathering Place”, a unique gathering area as it provides seating for Adjacent to the Gathering Place is a large picnic space for large groups and events. The picnic venue is perfect for summertime company events and large family gatherings. This picnic area is available on a first come, first served basis and can no longer be booked through the City of Richmond Rentals office. Biography The playground opened in 2014 in the field shared by Kathleen McNeely Elementary School and King George Park just east of Cambie and No. 5 Road. It has pour-in-place rubber surfacing. A ramped structure with a roller slide. A large disc swing, a mutli-sensory music station and sensory panels.

Biography The city’s largest fully accessible playground is a legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and one of three showcase inclusive playgrounds built in the 2010 Winter Games host communities of Vancouver, Whistler and Richmond. New play opportunities such as sand play table, rotating climber, and saucer swings have been included to ensure universal access and encourage imaginative play, sensory experiences and fun for children of all ages and abilities. A wheelchair accessible surface also allows parents and caregivers with physical disabilities access to the playground. Read more about this playground.

Notes Generations of families have enjoyed Lions Park since 1931. The Park spans over 12 acres. Biography Thi sLandscape Structures Inc playground includes a PlayBooster® playstructure which provides lots of fun for kids ages 5 to 12. There is a TurboTiwster™ Tunnel Slide, Summit Climber™, and Corkscrew Climber. Plus a PlayOdyssey® Roof provides shade from harmful UV rays. A portion of the playground has been surfaced with Playground Grass. The other portion of surfacing in wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground. There is an accessible play area dedicated to Travis Carter that includes an accessible play structure and swings. Onsite parking is available. There are accessible swings. There are sensory components. Part of one of the play structures has a ramp which our son can walk up in his walker and there is a portion where he can walk holding the handrail and holding my hand. Biography Located close to the Olympic Oval–one of three playgrounds built in honor of the 2010 winter Olympics. Shane’s Inspiration and Cre8play worked together on an innovative playground. The playground is designed to look like a real sized Tug Boat. It includes 2 slides, an observation deck, a control room, a log ADA transfer station, interactive sounds, a bell to ring and it is all accessible by a wide ramp. Although there is nothing that can be directly accessed from a wheelchair, you can get right up to play on all items except for the tall play structure. There are also many items that can be accessed by people who can be transferred or just had low motor skills. There are many play features that swing, spin, or bounce for children who benefit from those types of vestibular motion. The large school-aged climber has stairs so those with low motor skills can still get to the top. There is ample shade in the park with a variety of seating to include Adirondack chairs for those who may need some back support, benches, and picnic benches. There is also a fountain with a dog bowl attached.

Biography One of the three accessible playgrounds built in honor of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. This one is located at Celebration Plaza. Themed “Nature Play, Play with Nature,” the new playground touches on Whistler’s resort history, outdoor recreation culture and 2010 Winter Games competition environments. The inclusive playground features a wooden play house for children aged up to six years old, and a tree house play structure for those aged seven to 12 years old. Both have weather protection to offer 12 months of safe and sheltered play. Key design features of the Whistler accessible playground include a multi-sensory wall, which takes its inspiration from the skyline of the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, and a large, accessible tree house inspired by the region’s forests. Other elements include a rope climber similar to the existing rope climber, swings, slide, rubberized surfacing and other equipment. Seating integrated into the design allows parents and kids to sit comfortably, gaze at the mountain views and take it all in. From a parent, “There is a large Treehouse structure with a slide, a smaller toddler treehouse with a smaller slide, a rocking boat, swinging discs, a water play area, padded play surfaces, and swings (no infant swings, though). Notes Recreation Centre offers other accessible activities: 25 metre salt purification swimming pool with six lanes, a multi -use leisure pool (includes features such as a zero-depth entry, a lazy river, a tots’ area, two additional lanes, spray toys and benches with hot tub jets), sauna, steam room, swirl pool, additional multi-purpose rooms and an accessible waterslide tower with an elevator allowing people with mobility issues to share in the enjoyment of riding southern Vancouver Island’s tallest and longest waterslide. (Min height to ride the waterslide is 42″) Aquatic Complex Project History two skating arenas, which are bare for four months in the summer, for ice and dry floor activities a weight room with cardio and strength equipment aerobics/fitness, fencing, yoga and a several of other courses indoor and outdoor tennis courts racquetball and squash courts community recreation programs such as arts, music, dance, computers, cooking, language and sports. Biography This is an accessible Landscape Structures Inc PlayBooster® playstructure. An extensive ramping system bring children of all abilities to the center of the playground action. A Sway Fun™ glider provides a unique play experience for children, Reach Play Panels offer lots of fun games, and overhead events, crawl tunnels, slides and more keep all children engaged while they play for hours. The playground consultant on this project was Habitat Systems. The surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.
