This picturesque 28-acre public park in Huntley, Illinois, is home to the Discovery Zone, which opened in 2010.

It’s basically a play village for toddlers and preschoolers – with a rubber-cushion surface covering most everything that’s not a sidewalk, which are done in concrete. And despite looking like a junior amusement park, there is no admission fee.

Your kids can pretend to get their hair cut at Hoppy’s Barber Shop, or serve up imaginary ice cream cones at the Huntley Dairy Mart. (There’s an abacus for keeping track of orders and money!) They can scramble around playground equipment that looks like a firetruck, steer a “school bus” that rolls from side to side, ride in a playground train, play a variety of musical instruments, put mommy in the “zoo,” or practice their shot at a series of basketball hoops of different heights..

The playground has a fence all the way around it and pour-in-place rubber surfacing.  Just outside the Discovery Zone is a small brick building that contains men’s and women’s restrooms. (No diaper changing station.)

You’ll likely want to bring your lunch or at least a snack. There are several tables inside the Discovery Zone, and more options outside the wrought iron fence that encloses it.

There is a:

sandbox with dinosaur bones buried in the sand.

a musical area where the kids can make noises, and if they step on certain spots on the ground, chimes will ring.

a chalk wall to color on (bring your own chalk)

a Bankshot basketball court with hoops of all heights with crazy backboards (bring your own ball)

Owen’s Playground for Children of All Abilities opened in August 2016. The 14,000 sq. ft. playground is located at Hillcrest Elementary, 1435 Jefferson Avenue, Downers Grove, IL 60516.

It is open to the public after school, on the weekends and during the summer.

The playground features 111 play events, double wide wheelchair accessible ramps, accessible swings, a relaxation station for quiet breaks, shade and benches. There is plenty of climbing, spinning and sliding opportunities for kids of all abilities. In addition, the playground features two accessible GaGa Pits. The poured rubber surfacing provides easy access to the equipment.

There is free street parking and a parking lot.
