This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The 3,428-square-foot playground features a unique design to meet the special needs of the students. The playground includes rubber safety surfacing material, wheelchair accessible ramps, play panel activities and transfer stations to make play easier for the children. It also features slides, climbing and balancing activities and steering wheels for imaginary play activities. The playground was built by American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons as part of their annual meeting in partnership with KaBOOM!

Biography Located at the Greenway’s Baseline Road Trailhead, this playground is operated and maintained by Marion County. It is one of the many recreational sites within the 110-mile long, 80,000-acre Cross Florida Greenway, which stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to the St. Johns River. Boundless Playgrounds® give all children and all generations the chance to enjoy the natural wonders of the environment as they learn together through play. A Boundless Playground® contains elements that provide recreational and educational opportunities for children of all abilities. Simple differences include a poured-in-place rubber surface, ramps on the play sets, an elevated sand table and activity panels ,and swings and bouncers with high-back support. The trailhead includes picnic pavilions , restroom facilities and the 5-mile, paved, multi-use Baseline Road Trail which is a popular venue for walking, running , bicycling and inline skating.

Biography About Palmetto Bay Park Soon after Village incorporation, this park transitioned from a 5-acre park to a 25-acre park facility — a veritable oasis of passive and active attractions, tucked off US-1 just east of the Village Municipal Complex. Formerly known as Perrine Park, Palmetto Bay Park was renamed by the Village Council in 2006. The new Palmetto Bay Park features expansive greenspace, basketball courts, the largest Boundless Playgrounds in South Florida, and a six-field, state-of-the-art softball complex, Palmetto Bay Park is truly a multi-recreational facility. The focal point of the park is a two-story concession building and observation deck. The park also houses an air-conditioned recreation room that allows for indoor recreation activities and meetings. A meandering tree-shaded pathway for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists surrounds the entire property. Covered picnic pavilions within the large open green spaces are a haven for family gatherings and party rentals.

Biography This playground includes a PlayBooster® play structure that include the SlideWinder2, Thunderhead Climber® and the Pinnacle™ natural climber. In addition, the structure includes many fun panels and an extensive ramping system. To round out the playground design, Hex Shingle Roofs were included to protect children from the sun, and grass-like safety surfacing was included. The playground equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant was Rep Services.

Biography Playground opened in 2015. Read about the playground with a lot of pictures from this blog. From another blog, “Sharing some of the area’s special history and ambiance the park is a nautical theme hence the name Pirate Playground. The park is completely fenced in and small enough you can sit anywhere through out and observe your children playing without any problem. It is also nicely shaded (thank you park designers.) There are also easily accessible bathrooms. These are just the necessities. There are so many fun things at this park. A merry go round that even Mom can get on, comfy swings with backs on them , a cool climbing web, a musical instruments section, a pretend section with little buildings/shops and even a pirate ship. Our favorite the sand water sensory area”

Biography The equipment for this playground comes from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant was Rep Services. There are two playgrounds. The larger blue playground is completely accessible and has a separate area for younger children as well as baby swings. In addition, the playground includes water mist, interactive video game, rope jungle gym, tire swing, slides, tunnels, monkey bars and much more. There are covered picnic tables and easily accessible restrooms.

Biography The playground is one acre and is an equestrian theme. A sprawling PlayBooster® playstructure and Evos™ playsystem make up the unique play area called Scott’s Play. The playground welcomes children and families of all abilities with innovative play activities like the Sway Fun® glider. An extensive ramping system brings children using mobility devices to the center of the action where they’ll encounter lots of play panels, crawl tunnels, slides and more. Across from the PlayBooster is the Evos playsystem, which has a whole different set of challenges for all abilities. Biography SENSES Park is an All-Inclusive Playground that caters to children on the autism spectrum. The structures are separated by space to allow for self-learning, exploration and less intense social play experiences for those on the autism disorder spectrum. A key feature for parents is a perimeter fence, so that children can’t wander or bolt. The inclusive play space is fully accessible for children who use wheelchairs. The park is located in Buenaventura Lakes at the intersection of Florida Parkway and Buenaventura Boulevard. Notes Details George R. Sims, one of New Port Richey’s earliest promoters, donated Sims Park (then named Enchantment Park) to the City in 1924. He died in 1954, and in accordance with his instructions, he was buried about 50 feet from Orange Lake without a tombstone – just a redbud tree to mark the spot. (However, his remains were moved to a cemetery some years later.) Sims Park is protected by New Port Richey’s very first ordinance, and because of Ordinance One, Sims Park will remain the people’s park forever. Dogs are welcome in Sims Park and around Orange Lake on a leash. More history can be found here. Developed by the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District and operated by the City of Boca Raton, this 132-acre park continues its commitment to enhance the role of recreation and culture for residents and visitors alike.

Sugar Sand Park is home to the Children’s Science Explorium, the Willow Theatre, and the Field House which features an indoor gymnasium. The carousel includes 2 wheelchair chariots in addition to the horses.

The Science Explorium offers Sensory Friendly saturdays on the first Saturday of each month for an opportunity to explore the museum in a sensory-modified setting with sound and lighting adjustments. Call 561-347-3906 for additional information.

What is there to do?
- There is a community center, field house, playground (closed until early 2017), Children’s Science Explorium, Willow Theatre, nature trails, roller hockey rink, outdoor basketball courts & picnicking (http://www.sugarsandpark.org/map-of-sugar-sand-park). If you want to know something specific is open, please call before traveling a long distance! Occasionally, certain areas are closed for maintenance or other reasons – the number is 561-347-3900 for the Community Center and 561-347-3950 for the Field House.
Is there a fee to enter?
- Entrance to the park is free. The carousel costs $1 per person, per ride, and the Science Explorium has a suggested $5 per person donation. There is a $5 fee for non-residents to participate in Field House “open play” activities for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Classes, special events, pavilion rentals and leagues all have costs associated with them.
