This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The accessible part of the park features a zip line, seesaw for up to four, swings accommodating every child, a wide rollerslide, and special panels, including an interactive Braille clock and wind chimes. For parents there are many benches and the playground in fenced in. Note: The surfacing is a combination of pour-in-place and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver

Biography This 1/3-acre playground is located in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood (one block west of Austin Avenue and approximately 1 ½ blocks south of Grand Avenue).

Notes Features: An airplane theme 3 water misters connected to play equipment Sand area Biography One of the features in the Airplane where young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. They can communicate with the Control Tower via a talk tube radio and plan their route on the navigation panels. Many children with physical disabilities are denied the age-old tradition of digging in the sand because their wheelchairs can’t negotiate most sand play areas. The Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. There are water sprays coming from three misters, which are connected to the play equipment, offers hours of fun and a great way to beat the heat at the playground. Water provides a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

These playgrounds can also include accessible amenities, which can include drinking fountains and comfort stations. All NYC playgrounds have pour-in-place rubber or tiles for surfacing. This playground does NOT have an adapted swing seat.

The playground includes a preschool play structure with a roller slide, periscope and music chimes. The school-aged play structure has a triple slide and climbing mountain. Biography Thorn Park All-Abilities Playground was open to the public on April 2019. This playground provides all children and their families a place they can play together regardless of their abilities. Landscape Structures team helped the Parks and Recreation Department with the creation of this inclusive playground. Biography The All-Access to Play playground includes stainless steel slides and adapted swings. The highlight of this playground is the spray fountain which is multi-purpose as well as multi-seasonal. There is a stone wall seating area surrounding the plaza. This area is a lot of fun with bronze ants climbing upon the wall. The stone wall area also has incomplete nursery rhymes written on it for new readers to enjoy filling in or caregivers sharing in the fun. During colder months the plaza turns from water into an area where children still play around whimsical features or enjoy the entertainment of a professional performance. There is a changing room. Biography The playground was carefully designed for the enjoyment of children of all physical capabilities providing the chance to play, imagine and soar. It offers an elaborate wooden play structure of tunnels, bridges, towers, swings and rings built over soft sand. A parent who visited this playground reported, “We drove over an hour to get there and it was all for nothing. The park didn’t even have adaptive swings. It was all sand which was nearly impossible to push her through. None of the structures could accommodate her wheelchair whatsoever. We were disappointed! “

Biography The playground’s activities are accessible to users with reduced mobility through specially designed equipment such as low reach panels. The surface of the playground is made of a soft, skid-resistant rubber. Elevated slide platforms with transfer tiers on the playground’s two slides also make the playground easier to navigate. The Rollerslide provides a multi-sensory experience with room for more than one at a time, encouraging cooperative play, while the Cloudburst Slide helps children into a properly seated position. Talk tubes enable children to discover the magic of “long distance” communication, bongo drums with three different tones allow them to make music and saddle spinners help them discover the cause and effect relationship between body position and movement. The playground also features a Sway Fun Swing, which is a wheelchair accessible glider swing. The playground was done byLandscape Structures and PlayFitness.

Notes Features: Two little league fields, street hockey court, tennis court, basketball court and football field One of the baseball diamonds was named for Ray Dunn, a coach and mentor to thousands of Quincy Point youngsters. There is also a memorial stone in honor of David and Stephen Pitts, two Quincy Point brothers who fought in Vietnam.
