This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Municipal Park is a diversified 18-acre community park with entrances on both Commerce Drive and Main Street Extension. The park’s amenities include a Recreation Center, multi-use fields, a picnic pavilion, tennis courts, a basketball court, skateboarding park, a playground, small picnic shelters, a .66 mile fitness/nature trail, and a concessions/restrooms building. Biography Playground which opened in September 2016 includes a Liberty Swing.

Notes Biography The Teresa Cameron playground is the heart of PlayRights mission. The playground originally conceived by local Kiwanians was over 15 years in the making. Over 150 community volunteers participated in the four day build for this project. Features include: concrete sidewalk attaching the playground borders to existing paved walking trails and parking at the nearby community centre. The playground also feature 45% rubberized surface, with the Remaining base comprised of Fibar. Multiple ramps over accessible entry on the equipment from both the north and south sides. There are also staged transfer points along the length of the main component. A tapered rockwall leads to multiple sensory panels including musical instruments, colour wheels, and Braille panels. This playground also features a “rolling” boat apparatus, and a climbing netplex component. Also included at this site is a separate structure specifically designed for 18 month to 4 year olds. This project was made possible by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Kiwanis Club of Ingersoll, Amico Infrastructures, Ingersoll Community Foundation, and the town of Ingersoll.

Biography The playground opened in September 2016. There are chair swings along with typical swings; a chair zip line, next to a typical zip line; and the main structure doesn’t have rope ladders or other moving objects that could prevent a person with disabilities or a small child from using it. There is merry-go-round was designed to be wheelchair-transferable. There is a sensory wall. The playground was developed by Hope Helps which is dedicated to promoting local scholarships, research & advocacy to those individuals diagnosed with autism and their families.

Biography Playground includes: Wheel Chair Swing, Roller Table, Omni Spinner, Sway Fun, Sand Diggers and Adult Molded Bucket Swing all from Landscape Structures. The park was the signature project of the United Way’s Day of Caring on May 8, 2012. On that day, 75 volunteers contributed 450 man-hours to installing the equipment and beautifying the park. The playground’s surfacing is engineered wood mulch which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver throughout the playground.

Notes Located in the southeast corner of Elmhurst, Butterfield Park was renovated in 2016 and is home to the Park District’s inclusive playground, the Playground for Everyone, which is perfect for children of all abilities. Butterfield Park also has four baseball diamonds as well as a recreation building, picnic shelter, lighted tennis courts and soccer field. The recreation building serves as a satellite location for Sunbeams & Rainbows. Biography In keeping with the values and purpose of the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center in Houston, Texas, they offer the community a fully inclusive playground. A brightly colored PlayBooster® playstructure is connected by a series of ramps so all kids ages 5 to 12 can access the many innovative inclusive and sensory activities. The Sway Fun® glider brings kids of all abilities together to share a fun ride and make new friends. Interactive play panels are incorporated throughout at wheelchair height, plus a Sensory Play Center® offers tons of tactile, shiny and musical stimulations. Biography Rotary Centennial Park, located on Rotary Way, is designed so that children with disabilities can play alongside able-bodied friends. The park not only includes a playground, but it also includes a bankshot basketball court and a splash pad. Rotary Centennial Park was made possible by the 3 Rotary Clubs in Jonesboro (Rotary Club of Jonesboro, Rotary Club of Jonesboro – University, and Rotary Club of Jonesboro – Metro), and it was dedicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rotary International.

Biography This playground is dedicated to the memory of Sarah McCullough, a little girl that inspired her mother to dream of a place that all children can play. A true inclusive playground, this play area allows for all children to put aside physical and mental differences and play together. The rubber Poured in Place surfacing allows for great mobility to all pieces of equipment. This playground with equipment from Landscape Structures Inc has poured-in-place safety surfacing and a variety of play panels, overhead events and ramps. In addition, a Sway Fun® glider and Elevated Sand Table provide sensory-rich experiences. The playground consultant for this playground was O’Brien & Sons.

Biography There are two playgrounds in New Orleans City Park, one for ages 5-12 and this one for 2-5. Featuring a custom Clatterbridge handrail specifically designed for 2-5 years and also a Transfer Module for ADA accessibility. The structures were installed over a concrete base with a poured-in-place rubber surfacing. Separate play space for 2-5 year olds (tot lot). 10 6′ Border Timbers for Sandbox, Acc EZ Digger; Post Icons- Sun, Friends, Telescope, Hand Over Hand Ladder – Wheelchair Ht, Storefront and Crawl Tube, 360 Spiral Slide, Lightning Wide Slide, Double Glide Slide, Glide Slide, Crit Cross, Challenge Walk, Babble-On, U-Bounce, Steggo, Ribbon, Climb Across, Beanstalk Climber, Silo Climber, Spiral Climber, and Arch Swings. The playground was built by the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons in partnership with KaBOOM! as part of their annual meeting.

Biography The Mission of the Walnut Grove Playground is to provide a recreational playground where individuals of all abilities are able to Learn Through Play and enjoy the freedom to interact with their peers. The playground is being completed in two phases, with the second phase being completed in 2019. Currently, The Walnut Grove’s playground – The Hine Memorial Fund Inclusive Playground – incorporates play equipment that is versatile and appeals to children of all age groups and abilities. It includes a large play structure featuring double wide ramps a variety of slides, climbers, activity boards and fire poles. Beyond the main center structure, are free-standing pieces for children to play on, including a We-Saw where up to 4 people can see saw together and wheelchair users have easy access to transferring themselves from their chair, the Rollerslide engages children that use Cochlear implants to slide down without any interference to their device and an Omni Spinner, which spins riders in circles. The entrance of the playground features a large shade structure for picnic tables and musical equipment, which allows children to explore and create their own music on a variety of drums and a metallophone. Each instrument is designed so that all children have access to it, including those in a wheelchair. The second phase of the Hine Memorial Fund Inclusive Playground will feature 5 additional play sections, including: Sand Play, an Imagination area with play structures, swings, motion and a triple Zip Krooz. The surfacing of the playground is poured in place rubber and concrete so that all are able to access the play area. At this time port-a-johns are available for use, but the board of directors is exploring other options for the future.

Notes g. Biography Thornton Creek Elementary School created its playground after winning the grand prize of the School Grounds. Playgrounds. Common Ground.™ essay contest held in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation (NAESPF) in 2012. In addition to the playstructure with many sensory-rich components, there are many freestanding components that encourage inclusive play like the We-saw™, OmniSpin® Spinner and Oodle® Swing. Notes In June 2014, through the generous cooperation of the City of Byron, ownership of Tiger Town Park, located at 709 Hampton Drive, was transferred to the Park District. The Byron Park District renovated this park site to include a new inclusive playground, zip line play unit, Dynamo swings, new plaza area with permanent game tables, bocce ball court, full-size basketball court, additional parking spaces, asphalt pathway through the park, and additional landscaping. The Tiger Town Park is also an on-leash dog friendly park with waste bag stations for your use. Biography Playground opened in 2014. Equipment includes Zip Line, bird nest swing, a ramped structure and more. Surfacing is mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult to maneuver through the playground.

Notes 6 acres, divided into 4 areas: Discovery Hill—Discovery Hill is located in the southeast quadrant of Tongva Park. It features a children’s play area, shaded picnic area, and children’s splash pad (hours may vary due to efforts to reduce water usage during the current drought). Garden Hill—Garden Hill is located in the northeast quadrant of Tongva Park. It features seating bays, walking paths, and a shaded picnic area. Gathering Hill—Gathering Hill is located in the northwest quadrant of Tongva Park. It features a grassy ampitheater where many of the free performances produced by the City are held. It’s also home to Weather Field, a public art piece by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle. Observation Hill—Observation Hill is located in the southwest quadrant of Tongva Park. It features 18′ overlooks, shaded seating, walking paths, and public restrooms. Biography The wide ramps and rubber surface accommodate wheelchairs. The bucket-seat swings are good for kids who need extra support. A slide made out of roller balls is designed for children, such as those with autism, who like touch sensations. One of the slides is made out of metal instead of plastic, which can be a hazard to children with cochlear implants, which aid hearing. The equipment comes from Landscape Structures Inc. The playground is tucked away in a residential neighborhood up a steep hill behind the School for the Deaf, off Route 62. There’s a flower garden, a picnic table, three benches and a good-sized grassy area. The park is closed to the public when the School for the Deaf is in session but is otherwise open to anyone.

Biography This playground is a testament to the determination of a parent in championing its development, and the creativity of a landscape architect in integrating the playground into a beautiful, wooded hillside. Working with the playground designers at Landscape Structures, landscape architect, Phil Barlow, and the folks at Boundless Playgrounds®, the parent designed an enormous 25,000 square-foot playground that is unlike anything else. At the crest of the playground is a wheelchair-accessible tree house featuring an enclosed deck that is used by teachers to host classes. Cascading down from this vantage point is a series of play areas linked by walkways and poured-in place surfacing. Two bridges overlook a man made stream and waterfall, a picnic area protected by CoolToppers® shade systems and a wheelchair maze constructed from hedges. The site also feataures a Sway Fun® glider that allows children of all abilities to experience a swinging motion along with all of their friends. The playground consultant on this project was O’Brien & Sons.
