This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Details George R. Sims, one of New Port Richey’s earliest promoters, donated Sims Park (then named Enchantment Park) to the City in 1924. He died in 1954, and in accordance with his instructions, he was buried about 50 feet from Orange Lake without a tombstone – just a redbud tree to mark the spot. (However, his remains were moved to a cemetery some years later.) Sims Park is protected by New Port Richey’s very first ordinance, and because of Ordinance One, Sims Park will remain the people’s park forever. Dogs are welcome in Sims Park and around Orange Lake on a leash. More history can be found here. Biography This playground for children in grades K-3 was built by Circle K volunteers. Children in the school helped design the playground which is a Landscape Structures and Habitat Systems Playground. The playground surfacing is wood chips (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver their way through the playground.

Notes Called the “Gateway to the Bronx River,” Soundview Park is situated where the Bronx River opens into the East River. When the City of New York acquired the original 93 acres of land for this park in 1937, the entire area was composed of marshland. For a good chunk of its history, Soundview Park was a partially developed park built on a landfill. The southern third was once open water, while the remaining 2/3 of the park was tidal marsh, complete with three streams. Landfill operations began in the 1920s and lasted forty years. The landfill increased the height of the shoreline up to 30 feet above the marsh elevation, decreasing public access to the water. Happily, the park is now revered for its sports fields, fishing, and gorgeous views across Hunts Point to Manhattan. Today, the 205-acre park offers six grass baseball fields, a cricket pitch, a running track, a soccer field, six basketball courts, six handball courts, a running track with synthetic turf field, walking/biking paths and a new performance lawn. Biography The toddler playground opened in 2010 and was the first toddler playground integrating both inclusive and natural play elements in Minnesota. Designed by Landscape Structures Inc., our new playground is custom designed with every toddler in mind. The equipment is specifically for children 16 months to three years, at all stages of physical, cognitive and social development The layout provides the perfect balance of open space to run, jump and roll as well as fun play components that provide the “just-right challenge” for everyone St. David’s Center features a state-of-the-art playground developed for both typically developing children and children with special needs. MeMe’s Playground is located on the northern perimeter of St. David’s Center (near Plymouth Road) and is open to the public after 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends.

Biography The playground, which opened in 2015, has open space to encourage running and jumping as well as playground structures that are inspired by nature. It’s designed for children of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs and those with autism. The playground is designed for children aged three to ten. The playground is open to the community on weekends and night weekdays. The playground is connected to a 2.5-acre DNR-certified school forest, which encourages kids to play with sand, rocks, leaves and logs. St. David’s Center officials say that playing and exploring the outdoors is an important part of the learning experience for kids at the center.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s Playground opened in 2014. This is a pocket park, is unstaffed, and is open from dawn to dusk. This inclusive playground delivers a nature-inspired playground design, and even offers a custom treehouse-themed play structure. Plus, the extensive ramping system and rubberized playground safety surfacing will bring individuals using mobility devices to the center of the playground action. Developed by the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District and operated by the City of Boca Raton, this 132-acre park continues its commitment to enhance the role of recreation and culture for residents and visitors alike.

Sugar Sand Park is home to the Children’s Science Explorium, the Willow Theatre, and the Field House which features an indoor gymnasium. The carousel includes 2 wheelchair chariots in addition to the horses.

The Science Explorium offers Sensory Friendly saturdays on the first Saturday of each month for an opportunity to explore the museum in a sensory-modified setting with sound and lighting adjustments. Call 561-347-3906 for additional information.

What is there to do?
- There is a community center, field house, playground (closed until early 2017), Children’s Science Explorium, Willow Theatre, nature trails, roller hockey rink, outdoor basketball courts & picnicking (http://www.sugarsandpark.org/map-of-sugar-sand-park). If you want to know something specific is open, please call before traveling a long distance! Occasionally, certain areas are closed for maintenance or other reasons – the number is 561-347-3900 for the Community Center and 561-347-3950 for the Field House.
Is there a fee to enter?
- Entrance to the park is free. The carousel costs $1 per person, per ride, and the Science Explorium has a suggested $5 per person donation. There is a $5 fee for non-residents to participate in Field House “open play” activities for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Classes, special events, pavilion rentals and leagues all have costs associated with them.

Notes South Davis Park has five unique recreational areas: The Fairbanks Dog Park is a canine paradise with two exercise and training pens for local dogs and visitors alike. The Dog Park also has a pond for water-dog training, and a series of meandering trails that are traveled by many Fairbanksans—with or without their canine companions. Like most communities across the U.S, soccer is the #1 youth sport in Fairbanks. The 21 fields across the street from South Davis Park aren’t enough handle the growing need. So, the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association constructed six additional at South Davis Park with plans to develop four more fields in the coming years. Not to be outdone, the Interior Adult Soccer Association is constructing three adult soccer fields at the park as well. Softball is big in Fairbanks. To support their burgeoning numbers, the Golden Heart Softball Association is constructing three adult softball fields at the park, in addition to their four home fields across the street at the Hez Ray Sports Complex. If fast-pitch softball is your passion, there are five fields and a multi-purpose field house at South Davis Park constructed by the Interior Girls Softball Association.

Biography This Riverside Homeowners Association features two different play areas. Sunset Park has a PlaySense® play structure designed for 2- to 5-year-olds, and Sun Canyon installed a PlaySense play structure for kids ages 5 to 12. Both play areas welcome children of all abilities. In addition to the inclusive play playground, swings were included to provide the high-flying fun that children crave.
