This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Five MOMs (Mothers of Miracles), one Kiwanis Club, and hundreds of generous local citizens pulled together to make this inclusive playground happen for the community of Iola and its surrounding counties. Each of the MOMs picked out a play component based upon their child’s needs, including the Oodle® Swing and the Roller Table™. Physical therapists were consulted to help select other inclusive elements, like the Cozy Dome® and various sensory panels. The Riverside Park play area features a Summit Climber and a Cascade Climber, plus side-by-side Stationary Cyclers, one accessible and one standard. And since Kansas sun can be brutal, CoolToppers® shade systems were added to provide plenty of shade. The playground is partially surfaced with engineered wood fiber which may make it more difficult for some children to maneuver throughout the playground. Biography The 12,000-square-foot playground is also accessible for children and caregivers of all physical abilities. Rosedale playground’s features include: National Mall-themed play equipment. This custom equipment was designed especially for Rosedale, and elements include the White House, the US Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Washington Monument, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Natural History Museum, and the Air and Space Museum. Ramped access to the play equipment. The ramps are wide enough to allow two wheelchairs to pass each other or travel through the equipment together. Seating within the play equipment to allow caregivers or children to rest when needed. Sensory elements such as finger mazes, musical instruments, talk tubes, a sensory wall, and more. There are also quiet places for imaginary play for children who may prefer less stimulus. The Omni Spinner is a high-backed version of a Merry-Go-Round and allows children to be transferred into the equipment from a wheelchair or walker. The Spinner is good for sensory play, social skills, and team work. The Sway Fun Glider has room for two wheelchairs, plus two large benches for other passengers. Slides, overhead activities, and climbing features are located throughout the equipment. New signs, water fountains, and shade structure, with accessible picnic tables underneath, perfect for family gatherings. The main parking lot features new ADA accessible parking spaces. MORE PHOTOS

Notes Bellevue Park is Sault Ste. Marie’s main passive park. It is 17 hectares in size and offers a large playground area, 2.4 kilometres of asphalt walkway, multiple floral beds and a display greenhouse which is open to the general public. Biography The playground which opened in July 2016 includes outdoor musical instruments like a drum, ‘metallophone’, and chimes, designs and shapes designed to enhance tactile sensations, a ‘cozy dome’ cave that lets over-stimulated children have a quieter playing space, and several other “of the newest” climbing and spinning devices.

Two wheelchairs can pass on the ramps and there are large decks with crow’s nests. Children can wheel out from under the main traffic flow. At Riverside Village double wide ramps and extra large decks combine to provide exceptional elevated play space with ample room for multiple players with and without mobility devices. n addition to traditional slides and climbers, many different sensory experiences have been purposefully included to appeal to a wide range of users. Auditory, visual, olfactory, tactile, swinging, spinning and balancing opportunities are included, to name a few. Whether exploring independently or with friends and family, there is always something new to discover. There are special features, including musical instruments and miniature backhoes for playing in the sand. Biography Located right on the lake, this huge Ajax park is a great place to spend the day. It has two unique play structures — one for big kids and one for preschoolers. Both are fully accessible, and so is the large splash pad. The park also boasts a pavilion with washrooms and a concession stand. There are tables and chairs for picnics, big trees that provide shady spots and plenty of green space for burning off energy.

Biography The equipment for this playground comes from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant was Rep Services. There are two playgrounds. The larger blue playground is completely accessible and has a separate area for younger children as well as baby swings. In addition, the playground includes water mist, interactive video game, rope jungle gym, tire swing, slides, tunnels, monkey bars and much more. There are covered picnic tables and easily accessible restrooms.

The $2.3 million project is seven years in the making and designed to be a place where children of all abilities can play side by side. You’ll find a variety of pieces that are built with kids with mobility or strength issues and other disorders in mind. They will allow all kids to be incorporated into play across the 3.5-acre playground – the largest in Raleigh. The pieces are definitely spread out. If your children are young or if they could run off, this isn’t a playground where you can hunker down on a bench and read a book. There are some fences around the perimeter – but not all of the way around. But it’s definitely a place families will spend hours at for years to come. Here are 14 things to look out for when you go: Wide Decking: The massive main play structure features lots of wide decking so kids in wheelchairs and walkers can get in on the play. Handicapped Accessible Picnic Tables: Instead of being stuck at the end of the table, people in wheelchairs can sit with everybody else in these specially designed picnic tables. The tables will sit on one side of the playground in three small picnic shelters, which also are designed to offer a quiet, cozy place for kids with sensory issues to take a break. Equipment Accessed from Ground Level: This play piece and others are examples of play equipment that can be accessed from the ground level instead of climbing or rolling up onto above ground decking that’s mostly found at traditional playgrounds. Biography The playground is one acre and is an equestrian theme. A sprawling PlayBooster® playstructure and Evos™ playsystem make up the unique play area called Scott’s Play. The playground welcomes children and families of all abilities with innovative play activities like the Sway Fun® glider. An extensive ramping system brings children using mobility devices to the center of the action where they’ll encounter lots of play panels, crawl tunnels, slides and more. Across from the PlayBooster is the Evos playsystem, which has a whole different set of challenges for all abilities. Biography The Sensory Garden Playground is a combination of sensory-integrated playground equipment and amenities along with gardening areas. The 40-acre facility is being developed in four phases. Phase I opened spring 2015. The playground is located in Danada South Park. Accessible, portable washrooms are available onsite for your convenience. Phase I Thanks to the gracious support of donors, Phase I of the Sensory Garden Playground project is complete and opened in spring 2015. Phase I includes the following: 2-5-Year-Old Playground Area Fragrance Garden Paved Pathways Sound Garden Sensory Garden Playground Project Phases II-IV will be completed as funding is secured. These phases will include: 5-12 Year Old Playground Area Art Along the Way (sculptures to be installed Summer 2016) Art Along the Way is a component of the Sensory Garden Playground that will encourage appreciation for art and recreation/play, inspire a spirit of inclusion and imagination for all ages and abilities, as well as foster a welcoming and playful entrance environment for visitors to engage with during their visit. Biography The playground features two brightly colored, large climbing structures, swings, a sand table and a zip line, all of which can be accessed by kids of any ability. Centered between the pool and the baseball field at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, the sprawling play area is not fully enclosed, but it is surrounded by walking paths and plenty of grass, providing a safety net for those tots that tend to be runners. Travel and adventure is the theme of the new playground. The smaller of the two play structures is designed to look like a whimsical train. The rubber padded play-space is for the younger set, featuring tunnels, slides and low climbing walls at each train section, all connected by bridges. The larger play area resembles an airport tower, complete with an orange windsock fluttering from the top. A modern merry-go-round, a tall curved slide, a rope web, monkey bars and, a perenial playground favorite roller slide offer plenty to explore, but the real gem of this spot is the zip line. The second zip line features an accessible seat with a safety bar, so that anyone can enjoy the thrill of the ride.
