This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography At Castle Park II there are 2 playgrounds, a pre-school age 2-5 and school-age 5-10. It is a very popular place with tons of kids. There are 2 toddler swings and more bigger swings. Biography The Center for Lifelong Learning is a 89,000-square-foot special education school. It was chartered through the Piscataway-based Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission. The grounds include an accessible playground open to the public during non-school hours. Old Bridge-Sayreville Rotary Club provided the funding for the playground.

Notes This active recreation site features 535 acres which include a barrier-free playground, tennis courts, two swimming pools (for lessons only), a Sprayground, an inline rink, basketball courts, open fields, and 2.3 miles of paved trail for walking, biking, and in-line skating. There are also athletic fields available for use for games only, no practices. Please consult the Athletic Field Rentals link to the right under “Facilities” for further information. Biography Challenger Place is a place for all children to play in Monmouth County. This universally accessible playground provides all children, at their own level of play, an opportunity to laugh, play, grow and learn together. This play facility, opened in June 2004, includes elevated surfaces that are accessible to those in wheelchairs and Braille signs for individuals who are visually impaired. Each of the three play structures has areas in where children of varied abilities can play together, enjoying fun and stimulating activities. This playground project was a joint venture of the Monmouth County Park System and Challenged Youth Sports, and Middletown. Adjacent to Challenger Place is the Sprayground. This water-enhanced playground is a great place to be cool and play with water. The facility is open daily from mid-May- early September. The Sprayground opens weekdays at 11 a.m. and at 10 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Closing is at 7:30 p.m.

Biography From NJ Playgrounds, “This is a wonderful playground and sprayground. Because it is so expansive, this is extremely popular and crowded. My kids were entertained for hours, they loved it. There was a cool sway thing that you can sit in and someone can sway it by moving their body weight. The water table was a big hit, bring your buckets! Also the sand area was alot of fun since there were movable chutes and diggers. Also it is a “boundless” playground so it is handicap accessible.” Excerpt from http://www.monmouthcountyparks.com: “This water-enhanced playground is a great place to be cool and play with water. Located at the Dorbrook Recreation Area, this facility is open 7 days a week beginning May 19 and closes September 9. The Sprayground opens 10am on weekend and holidays and 11am weekdays. Biography One of the biggest playgrounds in the area along with Brookdale, this one provides plenty of structures to entertain your children. With the rubber ground cover, you will not need to worry about getting wood chips in your sandals! Ball field is nearby. One of the highlights is the great spider web structure, and plenty of slides, this playground is also fenced in. No permanent bathrooms, but there are 2 port-a-potties. Biography Fort Medford is actually two playgrounds in one. The first is the original Fort Medford, a Native American themed wooden playground complete with teepees, totem poles,and Native American decor. The other is the “J and I Samost”, the more recent and modern wheelchair accessible playground. Fort Medford Playground is themed after a fort with ramps that lead up to decks with play panels on them. This park also includes swings and slides. Other components include an interactive musical wall, a sandbox, a sway boat and a roller slide that is designed for children with no lower body mobility. Biography The playground includes wide ramps that are wheelchair accessible, adaptive swings, several slides and climbing areas. Adding to the fun you will find a low-height “Toss-n-Score” Basketball Basket, and a large “Sunblox Sail Roof” providing covering from the sun on warm summer days. There is also a “Whirl Wind” spinning seat, “bouncing” stationary cars and a See Saw.

Biography There is a tiny tot area for those who are just crawling or learning to walk, a medium sized area for preschool age tots and a larger play structure for the more experienced climbers. The giant rope sphere is the highlight of the playground. There are also two baby bucket swigs as well as a super cool giant disc swing (see photos.) And to top it all off, the entire playground has the soft, cushy floor we parents all love. There are two playground areas and the first area in a public park in New Jersey to be designed specifically for handicapped children. The park includes two picnic areas with shelters that can be reserved and plenty of additional activities making it a good destination for a large group or picnic.
