This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Playground which opened in 2014, is a a Landscape Structure playground. The ramped structure includes double wide ramps which lead to very high slides. There is a Sway Fun glides. The surfacing is pour-in-place rubber. Visit Landscape Structure’s website for more pictures.

Biography The playground, which opened in June 2015, is located behind the Arc, a non-profit agency located on Muscatine Avenue that provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It includes a Sway Fun, roller slide, climbers and more.

Notes Des Moines’ largest park is located at SE McKinley Avenue and Indianola Road and has two open-air shelters, playgrounds, an 18-hole disc golf course (click here for a full course map), trail, pond, lilac arboretum, Children’s Forest, lots of shade, parking and open space. BMX and soap box derby organizations lease space in the park for their groups’ events

Biography Playground includes: An outdoor musical station . The station incorporates a marimba, xylophone, rain wheel and tongue drums into one weatherproof structure, allowing several children to make music at one time. Adapted Swing Seats Phase II of the playground opened in the summer of 2017. Some of the new features include two long, parallel zip lines – one with a regular seat and one with an adaptive seat – an adaptive merry-go-round, a large saucer swing for reclining or multiple users, a ramped composite structure with many play items, and more music and sound toys. Easy access is ensured with the use of a smooth rubber safety surface for fall protection and equipment has been selected and designed to promote inclusive play.

Biography The playground which is open to the entire community is full of Landscape Structures Inc accessible playground equipment including an EVOS system, Accessible Power Lifter™ Chinning Bar, ChitterChatter Noodle™ Talk Tubes, Gyro Twister™ Spinner and much more. The playground consultant on the project was Outdoor Recreation Products.

Biography The Variety Star Playground was the the first all-inclusive playground in Cedar Rapids when in opened in October 2017. It will be ramped for accessibility, have a poured in place rubber surface, and will provide opportunities for children and adults of all abilities to interact together through play. The playground includes shade canopies, play structures to promote core strength, harnessed swings and a saucer swing that allows children to lay flat to experience sensation of swinging.
