This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This universally-accessible playscape was designed after the many beautiful and unique landscapes found in Michigan-the Great Lakes State. Little explorers can discover Michigan’s wonders and learn about the Great Lakes State through simulated rock, water and fossil features. The playscape includes: an “Up North Woods” cabin, simulated tree fort, sand dunes area, marsh challenge course with simulated cattails, raised sand play area and multiple climbing areas. Colorful rubberized surfacing depicts Michigan’s Lakes and rivers. Biography The universally accessible treehouse by The Treehouse Guys at the nature center is available for public visits. The treehouse was built as part of an Access to Recreation grant through the Community Foundation of St. Clair County. The Access to Recreation program was awarded to the Community Foundation by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as part of the Kellogg Foundation’s efforts to expand opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors.

Biography The playground is located at the back of the park, by Long Lake. Ramona Park has a fully-staffed and lifeguarded beach. The playground has both a large play structure for five- to 12-year-olds and a smaller play structure. The playground has a Sway Fun, two bouncing bug toys, a spinning toy and a PlayMotion X-Wave 2. Admission – Beach Season only: $5 per vehicle daily for Portage resident $10 per vehicle daily for non-resident $25 per vehicle annual Portage resident $45 per vehicle annual non-resident $50 per bus daily for groups of 15 or more Free admission during non-beach season.

Notes g. Biography Thornton Creek Elementary School created its playground after winning the grand prize of the School Grounds. Playgrounds. Common Ground.™ essay contest held in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation (NAESPF) in 2012. Biography A Boundless™ Playground and includes a Sway Fun Glider. Upjohn Park is 18 acre park that contains Kik Pool which is the only 50 meter outdoor swimming pool in the Kalamazoo area. The park also includes the City of Kalamazoo’s first skateboard park, a rugby/soccer field, tee ball/softball field, basketball court, tennis court, and picnic shelter. The playground includes many interesting musical instruments. This playground was funded in part by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation‘s Able to Play project in honor of the Foundation’s 75th anniversary. Note: The surfacing contains a combination of both pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography Versluis Park was created on the shore of a 50 acre man-made lake and designed to provide a fully accessible recreational experience. Today, Versluis Park features playground areas, picnic facilities, horseshoes & volleyball, beach and swimming areas with lifeguard stations and a bathhouse, fishing pier, boating, and one mile paved walking trail. Young and old alike can catch their limit from the Versluis Fishing Pier. Barrier free wheelchair access, safety rails, and seating make for an enjoyable family experience. Beach access consists of a deck, transfer step/backrest, shade trellis and seating, while lake access uses wheelchair ramp and transfer-step system down to the water. There is also a water-side viewing via a 300′ boardwalk with railing design that is sensitive to user sight-lines When the Versluis Park Project was first conceived, the township wanted an Inclusive Design that would create a fully accessible park all residents could enjoy. How well they succeeded was published online by the National Center on Accessibility of Indiana University in April, 2002. You can read the article here. On October 21, 2005 Plainfield Charter Township and the Parks & Recreation Department were presented the da Vinci Award for Versluis Park. Each year six nominees are presented the da Vinci Award after a worldwide search for qualified recipients. For more information about the da Vinci Award, log onto http://www.davinciawards.com . The award recognizes the most innovative developments and research in adaptive and assistive technology that embrace the Universal Design Principle, ultimately enabling everyone to participate and contribute in all aspects of society.
