Handicapped-accessible playground lauded as result of community spirit

The Northern New York Community Foundation has selected the students, parents, faculty and staff of Sherman Elementary School as recipient of the 2011 Spirit of Philanthropy Award.

The award, first given in 2010 in memory of Alex C. Velto, former foundation director, will be presented to the school at the foundation’s annual meeting in May. It is to “recognize and pay tribute to individuals or organizations whose achievements exemplify a commitment toward helping and inspiring others through the spirit of giving,” according to a news release issued by the foundation.

School representatives and community members raised funds for, and helped erect, the Lucy A. Colello Playground last spring. View a Slide Show of the Playground.  The playground equipment is from Playworld Systems.

Lucy, 7, daughter of Joseph D. and Robin M. Colello, was a Sherman Elementary student and proponent of the school constructing a handicapped-accessible playground. She died in June 2008 at Samaritan Medical Center of pulmonary bronchodysplasia, a chronic lung disease.
