This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Children in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility are able to get right up into the play. There is a climber with a slide and a climbing wall. A house climber with a slide, a space ship climber with a ladder, and the scoop climber are sure to provide great play time. There is a seat bouncer and a motorcycle bouncer, as well as a standing spinner and a bowl spinner. The preschool playground area is completely fenced with two gates that latch so kids can have a lot of safe freedom for play. There is limited shade in the park area but there are two picnic tables with umbrellas. Valleyview Spray Park is typically open from mid-June until Labor Day. Open 9am-9pm June and July, and 9am-7pm August through Heritage Day. This spray park is completely wheelchair accessible, with a concrete ground cover, as long as you don’t mind getting wet! This water park is set up really well for young children. There are multiple spray features. There are a lot of small sprays on the edges of the splash pad and the larger sprayers don’t do anything unexpected. The sprays appear to run continuously during operating hours and there was a staff member who knew first aid. There is limited shade in the spray park itself and a small amount nearby. It would be great to bring along a park umbrella, and a blanket to sit on. There are a couple of picnic tables near the washrooms by the spray park.

Biography The playground opened in 2016. A wheelchair-accessible ramp goes from the ground all the way to the top of the blue-tinted main structure, which featured typical playground accessories such as slides, climbing apparatuses and monkey bars. Shelter areas and a small merry-go-round – both in Royals blue – accompanied the main structure.

Notes South Glenmore Park in Calgary’s southwest is the area surrounding the south side of the Glenmore Reservoir which includes the Weaselhead Natural Area and has numerous trails and pathways, tennis courts, playgrounds and the Variety Spray Park. Park features Picnic area & shelter Playgrounds Spray park Tennis courts Polo field Washrooms (seasonal) Water fountains (seasonal) Bike and hiking trails Sailing school, boat rentals (Glenmore Sailing School) Cross-country skiing Hiking trails Biography It was the first barrier-free spray park in Calgary when it opened in the summer of 2017. The goal of the new space was to increase accessibility and inclusivity for all kids at the park. The playground has Landscape Structure’s equipment that include a Roller Table, Omnispinner, and a post and platform structure with a slide.

Biography The Variety Star Playground was the the first all-inclusive playground in Cedar Rapids when in opened in October 2017. It will be ramped for accessibility, have a poured in place rubber surface, and will provide opportunities for children and adults of all abilities to interact together through play. The playground includes shade canopies, play structures to promote core strength, harnessed swings and a saucer swing that allows children to lay flat to experience sensation of swinging.

Biography Serving as a regional destination for park users, this 21 acre park is home to a Boundless Playground, tennis courts, picnic shelters and large open play space. Biography Versluis Park was created on the shore of a 50 acre man-made lake and designed to provide a fully accessible recreational experience. Today, Versluis Park features playground areas, picnic facilities, horseshoes & volleyball, beach and swimming areas with lifeguard stations and a bathhouse, fishing pier, boating, and one mile paved walking trail. Young and old alike can catch their limit from the Versluis Fishing Pier. Barrier free wheelchair access, safety rails, and seating make for an enjoyable family experience. Beach access consists of a deck, transfer step/backrest, shade trellis and seating, while lake access uses wheelchair ramp and transfer-step system down to the water. There is also a water-side viewing via a 300′ boardwalk with railing design that is sensitive to user sight-lines When the Versluis Park Project was first conceived, the township wanted an Inclusive Design that would create a fully accessible park all residents could enjoy. How well they succeeded was published online by the National Center on Accessibility of Indiana University in April, 2002. You can read the article here. On October 21, 2005 Plainfield Charter Township and the Parks & Recreation Department were presented the da Vinci Award for Versluis Park. Each year six nominees are presented the da Vinci Award after a worldwide search for qualified recipients. For more information about the da Vinci Award, log onto http://www.davinciawards.com . The award recognizes the most innovative developments and research in adaptive and assistive technology that embrace the Universal Design Principle, ultimately enabling everyone to participate and contribute in all aspects of society. NOTE: There is a mixture of surfacing which may it make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver the playground.

However there is no adaptive swing seat. Playgrounds for All Children are designed to provide recreational opportunities for children of all ages and abilities. Biography Veterans Park is our newest and largest Hoover park. It features a professionally developed 5K cross-country course for walking and jogging and is host each year to the Great American Cross Country Race. The park also hosts such annual events as Hoover’s own Pet-a-Palooza and Movies in the Park. A large, open grassy area and a two-acre lake with pier accommodations for large crowds on evenings and weekends. The park is surrounded by a 5K cross country trail with a lake and pond, large inclusive playground, beach volleyball courts and two pavilions available for rent to the public.
