This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Sand Castle: Our Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. Water Play: Water offers a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. Biography The playground,located in South Los Angeles, has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Features include a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. The UAP also has resilient rubberized surfacing and shade structures for each play area. A totally inclusive play environment incorporates a a Landscape Structures Inc PlayBooster® playstructure with climbers, slides, accessible play panels, ramps, and tunnels. The playground also features a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. Beilenson Park on Monday, June 9, 2008. The accessible playground at Beilenson Park has two separate play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and two sections for five to twelve-year-olds. All of the areas have a “Maritime” theme and feature swings, ladders, a variety of balancing elements, climbers and slides. Special features to the 19,600-square-foot playground is an interactive drum play area and sensory wall. Other elements include spring toys, crawl tunnels, landscaping and drinking fountains. Enjoy the new 19,600-square-foot addition to a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility in the San Fernando Valley – Lake Balboa. Included in the design is a lighthouse-themedLandscape Structures PlayBooster® playstructure, as well as other themed components throughout. Biography This is the 28th universally accessible and inclusive playground to be developed by Shane’s Inspiration and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The equipment was built by Landscape Structures and features a sea-creatures theme. The playground incorporates some musical elements for kids to engage with. There is plenty of parking and a ton of space for running around. The tot park is separate from the main play equipment. This playground is not fenced. Equipment includes: Bridges, Bubble Windows, Climbers,Crawl Tunnels, Musical Elements, Play Panels, Pod Bridge,Pod Climbers, Ramps, Rubberized Surface, Slides, Talk Tubes, Tot-Park, Twister Slide

Biography The playground features two brightly colored, large climbing structures, swings, a sand table and a zip line, all of which can be accessed by kids of any ability. Centered between the pool and the baseball field at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, the sprawling play area is not fully enclosed, but it is surrounded by walking paths and plenty of grass, providing a safety net for those tots that tend to be runners. Travel and adventure is the theme of the new playground. The smaller of the two play structures is designed to look like a whimsical train. The rubber padded play-space is for the younger set, featuring tunnels, slides and low climbing walls at each train section, all connected by bridges. The larger play area resembles an airport tower, complete with an orange windsock fluttering from the top. A modern merry-go-round, a tall curved slide, a rope web, monkey bars and, a perenial playground favorite roller slide offer plenty to explore, but the real gem of this spot is the zip line. The second zip line features an accessible seat with a safety bar, so that anyone can enjoy the thrill of the ride. Biography Overlooking a beautiful, tranquil lake, Prado Regional Park’s unique Universally Accessible Playground design weaves elements of the lush natural landscape into its playful and cool design. Toddlers can sail away in their sturdy and fully-accessible boat while school-age children discover the lost Water Island in the shade of swaying palm trees. The park has a Zero-Depth Water Play Zone. There is a sensory wall that is embedded with water creatures (turtles, fish, frogs) that splash, ribbit, and squirt; while combining a variety of textures, running water, and sound. This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground. Prado Regional Park is a one-stop recreational paradise located in the Chino Valley basin where San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles Counties connect. The park is loaded with outdoor recreation and adventure offering: Fishing, camping, hiking, biking and nature trails, disc golf, picnic facilities, two 18-hole golf courses, an Olympic shooting range, horseback riding, and archery.

Notes Fully accessible restrooms are available Biography Shane’s Inspiration opened on September 21, 2000 in memory of Shane Williams who died of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It was the first West Coast Universally Accessible Playground created by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks. This is a fully accessible disabled children’s playground (Universally Accessible Playground). This playground is located in Park Center of Griffith Park (across from the Merry-Go-Round. The Airplane: Cruise down the accessible “jet way” and take off on this jetliner. Pilot and co-pilot can manage the controls in the cockpit while checking their compass for direction. Accessible Slides: Immediately adjacent to the bottom of each slide is a landing pad, which gives with children mobility challenges the opportunity to depart the slide and comfortably. The Lucky Star Chaser: This space shuttle gives children of all abilities a chance to adventure into space. Ronald’s Ship of Dreams: Ronald’s Ship of Dreams, generously donated by Ronald McDonald House Charities, provides hours of imaginative play. Enter through the accessible “gangway” and explore the wheelhouse, complete with a talk tube radio system.

Notes Features: Interactive Maze Accessible Slides Accessible Swings Water Play Two “Tree Houses” Biography This 10,000-square-foot playground’s colorful zoo and carousel theme draws on historic community landmarks, enchanting adults and children. Little ones can travel through a fun-filled, interactive maze while school-age kids slide, swing, and play with the animal artistry. Two zoo animals guard the entrance…ready to spray water at the touch of a button. For the more adventuresome, two “tree houses” provide hours of mystery and intrigue. The playground was made possible through the combined efforts of Councilmember Ed Reyes, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, and Shane’s Inspiration. Biography Students at Curtis School in Los Angeles, Calif., are connected with nature during recess each day. The school is home to a nature-inspired playground with PlayOdyssey® Tower, Netplex® and PlayBooster® playstructures. Biography The 4th Avenue Park, located in Los Angeles County, celebrates America’s movement West with this historically themed playground design. Kids of all abilities can join a covered-wagon caravan, then stand lookout at the top of the O.K. Corral fort maze. A TuffRider® Horse provides a great getaway. Notes The park features: colorful slides tubes bridges adapted swings interactive puzzles a quiet area a dragon mister a Sway Fun Biography Children with and without special needs are invited to the Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital. This bright and safe play area provides children with integrated play opportunities through specially-designed playground equipment with sensory features. Opened in February 2008, the Playground accommodates children with wheelchairs, leg braces, crutches and other barriers that would otherwise leave them confined to the sidelines at traditional playgrounds. The Playground provides a colorful, safe and stimulating outdoor haven for children in the community — regardless of their physical limits — to come together, play and learn from each other. The nearly half-acre play area features special equipment in a modern and creative environment. The Playground has sturdy foam ground cover to protect children from falls and yet is wheelchair-friendly. The park features a wonderland of brightly colored slides, tubes, bridges, swings, interactive puzzles, a quiet area and lush landscaping for children ages 2 to 12. A water feature shoots columns of water up from the ground while a whimsical blue-eyed red dragon puffs clouds of mist down toward children, which is especially useful on hot days. A gently sloping ramp includes motion sensors that, when triggered, set off musical chimes. Through a joint-use agreement with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the playground is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (except holidays), with maintenance and security provided by the city. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground done in collaboration with RecWest Outdoor Products. Special Saturday Play Dates Hosted by Support Groups The Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital offers free Saturday “Play Dates” with coordinated activities including face painting, arts and crafts, entertainment, and treats (but please feel free to bring a sack lunch). LAOH support groups Las Niñas and Juniors/Pinafores host these events that offer members opportunities to volunteer.

Biography Buckle in and rocket to the moon at the space-themed Universally Accessible Playground at Parque De Los Sueños in East Los Angeles. This colorful planetary play space features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing. Older astronauts can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and while hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes. A fully-accessible 3-foot-high maze provides hours of active and imaginative play. And for children with developmental delays, sound pucks embedded in the playground encourage auditory discovery. Biography The playground at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is located just off the HBO Café. The spot is meant to be a relaxing place for patients and families. It is a place for kids of all abilities to play together. With a spongy fall surface throughout the grounds, kids are invited to steer a pilot’s wheel, peer through a periscope, sway back and forth on a wheelchair-accessible glider and prop themselves up with the help of strategically placed handle-bars to count on an abacus – activities that are physically and mentally challenging and fun. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground that opened in 2010 with equipment from Landscape Structures.

Biography This engaging Universally Accessible Playground centers on a ship theme, providing an accessible Control Central, complete with two balconies with steering wheels to navigate! These steering ports offer children with disabilities the opportunity to sail side-by-side with their peers. A maze panel, which is accessed from the deck and the ground level, also facilitates interaction while honing fine motor skills. For the more adventuresome, a pod walk, which helps develop balance and depth perception, provides a short cut to the Engine Room. After setting your course, you can relax with your friends in the Living Quarters of the good ship SS WilshireCrest. Or why not challenge your co-captain to a friendly game of tic-tac-toe? A signing panel gives all mates the chance to learn a new language while bright talk tubes let you stay in close contact with the Engine Room.

Biography Renee’s Place has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Each play area has a swing set and shade structures. The UAP also has colorful resilient rubberized surfacing and benches embellished with whimsical artist created tiles. The five to twelve-year-old area is in the shape of a train. Sound features include a train engine, whistle and sound of a train going over tracks. Another special feature of the 17,000-square-foot playground is a foot path with a water element that will provide a unique sensory activity, complete with gentle mist. Biography This Shane”s Inspiration playground has a nautical theme with tall, mast like umbrellas covering a boat decorated with a huge proud pelican at the bow. Wheelchair accessible ramps lead up into the hull where you can find a rotating rain gauge, musical knobs to turn, slides, stairs and ropes to climb down to the rubber coated flooring at ground level. A black 20-foot, humpback whale sits in the giant sandpit and keeps the massive swimming turtle sculpture company. Beneath the sand there is a discovery pool for little fingers to explore. Other wonderfully whimsical features of the park include a large rock abacus, a musical wind chime and rocking seahorses to ride. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.
