This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography If you like running through the sprinkler, you’ll love the Fairfax County Park Authority’s newest attraction – Our Special Harbor Sprayground at Lee District Park. The fully accessible complex features Chesapeake Bay-themed attractions including a spraying osprey nest, Chessie the sea serpent, misting sunflowers and a lighthouse. The beach area is quieter with softer bubblers and interactive water tables. The computerized water maze and dumping crab basket provide more lively activity. The spray park, tree house and a playground for children ages 5 to 12 have been completed and are open to the public. The new playground, known as “Chessie’s Big Backyard,” is fully accessible and incorporates slides, swings and other equipment specially designed for use by all children, including those with special needs. Biography The playground opened at Warriors’ Path in April 2007 featuring a variety of outdoor recreation experiences for children of all abilities. Along with the fully-accessible playground area, the complex also features: *Lions Narnia Braille Trail* with eight sensory stations along a quarter-mile, wheelchair-accessible Trail that tell visitors the story of Aslan, the lion in C.S. Lewis’Chronicles of Narnia fantasy. *Anderson Treehouse, a fully-accessible treehouse Palmer Center Foundation Amphitheater*, a fully-accessible facility able to host audiences from 200 to more than 1,000.

Biography Accessible from Mt. Airy and Westwood, Mt. Airy Forest’s 1,459 acres includes miles of hiking trails and bridle trails (located off Diehl Road) for horseback riders. Mt. Biography The City of Scranton’s largest park, Nay Aug, grants residents and visitors a touch of nature amid the city landscape. Walking trails, picnic areas, kid-friendly rides, two (2) playgrounds, two (2) Olympic-sized swimming pools and waterslide complex number among the attractions. The Everhart Museum is also located within the park. A rock-strewn gorge and waterfalls add to the allure and have been named a National Natural Landmark. A pedestrian footbridge opens in 2007 to access parkland across the Roaring Brook untouched for many years. Nay Aug Park’s David Wenzel Tree house is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, opened on Friday, May 25, 2007. It overlooks the gorge, rising an awesome 150 feet above. The tree house was constructed by Forever Young, Inc., with public and private donations and set the stage for additional tree house construction in other cities across the United States.

Biography The tree house is located in a large white oak tree and stands 15 feet off the ground. Access is provided from a hard surfaced walkway that connects to a series of ramps which wind through a rocky ledge. The final section of ramp brings the visitor to the base of the tree house. The tree house is located at the southern end of the park near the large picnic shelter and is available for use year round. See more pictures

Biography The universally accessible treehouse by The Treehouse Guys at the nature center is available for public visits. The treehouse was built as part of an Access to Recreation grant through the Community Foundation of St. Clair County. The Access to Recreation program was awarded to the Community Foundation by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as part of the Kellogg Foundation’s efforts to expand opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors.

Biography Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities along with the Fairfield County Soil and Water District, the US Natural Resource Conservation Service, the City of Lancaster, the Southeastern Ohio Center for Independent Living, and the Heart of Ohio RC&D created a unique addition to the Lancaster Heritage Trail. The trail has life-sized musical instruments, a boardwalk through a wetland, and an accessible tree house. There are many pictures of both the Sensory Trail and the accessible tree house HERE

Notes Southwind Park is a National Model Park. The unique 80 acre state-of-the-art park serves as a national model by providing a new dimension of inclusion for all people, “without boundaries.” It has gone beyond full compliance of the American Disabilities Act, with a special emphasis and attention given to individuals with physical and cognitive needs. Biography The park includes: Three completely accessible fishing piers on the lake allow anglers to try their luck at catching bluegill, bass and catfish. One of the city’s largest playgrounds is barrier-free and includes accessible swings and outdoor musical instruments. For safety and comfort, there is pour-in play surface. This 8-acre grassy area is ideal for kite flying, Frisbee and just hanging out with friends and family. Five picnic shelters, equipped with ceiling fans and electric outlets, are scattered throughout the park. A large familiy picnic shelter is located near the great lawn and sports courts. The Enabling Garden has raised planters for seated gardening. The Tranquility Garden, for persons with Alzheimer’s or dementia, has seating areas and a grove of white birches. The Fragrant Garden features a waterfall and sensory plants in easy reach. The Children’s Garden includes a vegetable garden, native plant area, bird attracting garden and many different paths and whimsical items. The Butterfly Garden has interpretive signage, seating and a water feature. Navigating the park is easy with a 2 1/2 mile concrete trail that has built-in directional guides and a color-coded wayfinding system for individuals with cognitive disabilities. The park’s exclusively designed tram is accessible and carries up to 8 people, providing either a complete tour or a ride to a specific park location. a barrier-free tree house/nature observatory

Biography Warriors’ Path is the only Tennessee State Park with a Boundless Playground – where children of all physical and mental abilities can play together.
