This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Amenities: Blue Mountain is among the City’s original parks and continues to be a vibrant community space. Within this beautiful urban forest setting, a network of paths lead the visitor under a canopy of tall Douglas Fir, Red Cedar, North Red Oak, and even Redwood trees. A variety of sport and recreation amenities, including a grass playing field, ball diamond and three tennis courts, invite both casual and organized play at the park. On warm summer days, the wading pool and spray park are popular meeting places for families. Biography The playground nearby provides a variety of accessible features: a rubberized safety surface, climbing ropes, roller slide, oodle swing, music chimes, and a practice bike path invite discovery and fun for all abilities.

Biography Opened September 30, 2009. The structures and independent play areas, designed by Habitat Systems Inc. and Landscape Structures, have many options for ground level play that are accessible, inclusive and FUN! Ground level play as opposed to ramp access. The accessible components were chosen by parents with physically challenged children and the therapists working with them. Path placement and other elements of the design were planned in order to facilitate a flow of inclusive play and social interaction. The playground features: touch panels, wind chimes, balance beam, spring and balance apparatus, toddler structure with swings, adapted swings, a First Nations Medicine Wheel, basketball court, shaded accessible picnic areas, and benches. The First Nations Medicine Wheel used in First Nations culture as a symbol of the life, health and values of an individual, community or Nation.

Biography Centennial Park is one of Langford’s best all ages parks. Located halfway between Downtown and Langford Lake, Centennial Park is the perfect place for a gathering or baseball game. Four baseball diamonds, two tennis courts, and a washroom/concession building keep adults happy while two playgrounds entertain the kids – one of which is the newly upgraded intermediate, playground with an Explorer Dome and new, wheelchair -accessible picnic tables. Little ones will enjoy the firefighter-themed splash park as well. Both playgrounds are specially surfaced to accommodate children with physical challenges. Getting to Centennial Park is made easy by City of Langford’s own Trolley. Parking is also available.

Notes Park Includes: outdoor swimming pool with changing facilities softball and soccer fields lacrosse and ball hockey courts a playground and community garden. A lot of parking is available from 148th Street. Biography It includes climbing structures and play equipment which cater to a variety of needs and abilities for both younger and older children. The playground includes a short walking track inspired by video games. Kids will pass through the power up area and gain points as they pass over medallions, adding their scores as the go. The playground benches have additional space to the side for walkers, strollers and wheelchairs.

Notes King George/Cambie Community Park is a large 30 acres park in East Richmond and offers various amenities including an artificial turf field, spray/waterplay, community garden, and a picnic area. This sports oriented community park has many opportunities for outdoor play including 5 sports fields 4 ball diamonds, 3 basketball courts, 3 tennis courts and spectator bleachers. The King George Park artificial turf field opened in September 2008 and provides a top-rate playing surface for all field sports groups. In addition to the the sports amenities in the park, there is a themed waterplay area with geysers, spray toys and more. This spray park opens the week of July 1 and closes after Labour Day, or as weather permits. In extreme dry summers, the waterplay area may be closed for water conservation purposes. Near the waterplay area is the “Gathering Place”, a unique gathering area as it provides seating for Adjacent to the Gathering Place is a large picnic space for large groups and events. The picnic venue is perfect for summertime company events and large family gatherings. This picnic area is available on a first come, first served basis and can no longer be booked through the City of Richmond Rentals office. Biography The playground opened in 2014 in the field shared by Kathleen McNeely Elementary School and King George Park just east of Cambie and No. 5 Road. It has pour-in-place rubber surfacing. A ramped structure with a roller slide. A large disc swing, a mutli-sensory music station and sensory panels.

Biography The city’s largest fully accessible playground is a legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and one of three showcase inclusive playgrounds built in the 2010 Winter Games host communities of Vancouver, Whistler and Richmond. New play opportunities such as sand play table, rotating climber, and saucer swings have been included to ensure universal access and encourage imaginative play, sensory experiences and fun for children of all ages and abilities. Biography Thi sLandscape Structures Inc playground includes a PlayBooster® playstructure which provides lots of fun for kids ages 5 to 12. There is a TurboTiwster™ Tunnel Slide, Summit Climber™, and Corkscrew Climber. Plus a PlayOdyssey® Roof provides shade from harmful UV rays. A portion of the playground has been surfaced with Playground Grass. The other portion of surfacing in wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground. Biography Located close to the Olympic Oval–one of three playgrounds built in honor of the 2010 winter Olympics. Shane’s Inspiration and Cre8play worked together on an innovative playground. The playground is designed to look like a real sized Tug Boat. It includes 2 slides, an observation deck, a control room, a log ADA transfer station, interactive sounds, a bell to ring and it is all accessible by a wide ramp. Biography One of the three accessible playgrounds built in honor of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. This one is located at Celebration Plaza. Themed “Nature Play, Play with Nature,” the new playground touches on Whistler’s resort history, outdoor recreation culture and 2010 Winter Games competition environments. The inclusive playground features a wooden play house for children aged up to six years old, and a tree house play structure for those aged seven to 12 years old. Both have weather protection to offer 12 months of safe and sheltered play. Key design features of the Whistler accessible playground include a multi-sensory wall, which takes its inspiration from the skyline of the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, and a large, accessible tree house inspired by the region’s forests. Other elements include a rope climber similar to the existing rope climber, swings, slide, rubberized surfacing and other equipment. Seating integrated into the design allows parents and kids to sit comfortably, gaze at the mountain views and take it all in. From a parent, “There is a large Treehouse structure with a slide, a smaller toddler treehouse with a smaller slide, a rocking boat, swinging discs, a water play area, padded play surfaces, and swings (no infant swings, though). There are restrooms, dining, and shopping all right there.” See more pictures

Notes Recreation Centre offers other accessible activities: 25 metre salt purification swimming pool with six lanes, a multi -use leisure pool (includes features such as a zero-depth entry, a lazy river, a tots’ area, two additional lanes, spray toys and benches with hot tub jets), sauna, steam room, swirl pool, additional multi-purpose rooms and an accessible waterslide tower with an elevator allowing people with mobility issues to share in the enjoyment of riding southern Vancouver Island’s tallest and longest waterslide. (Min height to ride the waterslide is 42″) Aquatic Complex Project History two skating arenas, which are bare for four months in the summer, for ice and dry floor activities a weight room with cardio and strength equipment aerobics/fitness, fencing, yoga and a several of other courses indoor and outdoor tennis courts racquetball and squash courts community recreation programs such as arts, music, dance, computers, cooking, language and sports. Biography This is an accessible Landscape Structures Inc PlayBooster® playstructure. An extensive ramping system bring children of all abilities to the center of the playground action. A Sway Fun™ glider provides a unique play experience for children, Reach Play Panels offer lots of fun games, and overhead events, crawl tunnels, slides and more keep all children engaged while they play for hours. The playground consultant on this project was Habitat Systems. The surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography The park equipment includes a rotating net, arch swing, wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, see-saw, diggers and spinners. Due to its location just south of the Courtenay Airpark, the Rotary Skypark has an airplane theme, with an airplane climber, and a gazebo that kids can pretend is their very own air-traffic control tower.
