This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground was carefully designed for the enjoyment of children of all physical capabilities providing the chance to play, imagine and soar. It offers an elaborate wooden play structure of tunnels, bridges, towers, swings and rings built over soft sand. A parent who visited this playground reported, “We drove over an hour to get there and it was all for nothing. The park didn’t even have adaptive swings. It was all sand which was nearly impossible to push her through. None of the structures could accommodate her wheelchair whatsoever. We were disappointed! “

Biography Creekside Park in Archdale has a fully ramped inclusive playground with a pirate ship theme. It is easily accessible from the handicap parking. It is attached to the side of our Recreation Center which is outfitted with shop style automatic doors and easily accessible restrooms. This playground was installed in 2018 by Barrs Recreation and is designed by Burke.

Biography This Landscape Structure playground includes a large ramped structure, a SwayFun, a EVOS climbing structure and a Wee Evos for the younger set. There are many opportunities for vestibular movement including swings, a roller slide, and spinners.

This park includes a variety of musical instruments and sensory experiences. There are chimes, drums, a rain wheel and a texture panel. There is a digging pit as well as an elevated sandbox perfect for wheelchairs and walkers. This park also includes typical, baby, and adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Biography This all-inclusive playground, which opened in 2016, includes wheelchair swings, a four-seater seesaw, a sit-in MerryGo-Round, a rocking boat, double ramps and rubberized surfaces — all accommodations that provide an opportunity for individuals of all ages and abilities to play together outside. The playground includes a Liberty Swing.

The lower playground is accessible via ramp and includes climbers and both traditional and an adapted swing. All of the equipment is in mulched beds with ramps allowing access for wheelchairs and walkers. The largest of the climbers is accessible via ramp. There is an assortment of different sensory equipment at this park including bouncing equipment, sensory panels, and a swinging bridge. There is also a large area of equipment designed for strengthening exercises making this a perfect location for therapy session. This Leather and Associates designed playground has a NASCAR theme. The larger playground is modeled after a racetrack complete with cars and road. There is rubberized playground surfacing. The larger of the two playgrounds is divided into ages 2-5 and 5-12. Special care was taking in designing this playground in order to include a wide variety of textures and materials. Sensory equipment includes musical instruments, various moving bridges, and sensory wheels. The park also includes a large number of adapted swings.

Click here for a printable key request form Biography Trillium Health Resources has awarded New Hanover County Parks and Gardens with a $750,000 Play Together Grant which will go towards constructing an inclusive playground at Hugh MacRae Park. The new playground which opened in 2016 provides inclusive play opportunities for children with all abilities and of all ages. Features include accessible equipment for children with mobility issues, bright colors for the visually impaired and quiet nooks for children with autism. There are elements for smaller children, ages 2-5, and a separate area for those 5-12 years old. Nearby, adults can exercise on the new fitness stations while their children play on the playground. The project also included a new 2,700 square foot splashpad, which opened in April 2017.
