Halifax

Ecole John W. MacLeod Fleming Tower School–159 Purcell’s Cove Rd.  The playground has a shiny, modern climbing gym, multiple slides, tunnels, a zip line, swings, basketball courts, hopscotch, planters, picnic tables, student-painted murals and even an outdoor classroom with wooden benches and a blackboard. Designed by the school’s 330 students, the playground was built in one day by parents and volunteers from the national non-profit group KaBOOM! in partnership with Toronto-based Foresters life insurance company.

Westmount Inclusive Playground–6700 Edward Arab Avenue.      The enclosed playground provides a safe and fun venue for blind children, with tactile markers and audible cues to define where they are. The facilities include multi-deck components with wheelchair ramps, accessible swings and ground-level panels, bells and drums, and brightly painted pavement markings. The playground has been designed around an airport theme – a tribute to the first municipal airport, which was located on the site 75 years ago. Play structures include a simulated control tower, runway and emergency fire trucks. A mobility challenge course, a special feature at the site, helps improve the skills of wheelchair users has 18 to 20 different surfaces and challenges for wheelchair users of any age. The components will simulate real-life obstacles like asphalt and gravel surfaces, concrete curbs, inward- and outward-opening doors and small hills. The school has also put in a butterfly garden and continue to look for ways to beautify their outdoors.
