Calgary

Alberta Children’s Hospital Playground–2888 Shagnanappi Train N.W. It is behind the hospital, but is open to the public.  The playground includes a preschool play structure with a roller slide, periscope and music chimes. The school-aged play structure has a triple slide and climbing mountain. There is also a hand and foot spinner, an accessible swing,a 4 person bouncer, stage and teepee. Bridgeland Community Centre Playground--Bridgeland – 9th St and Centre Ave NE. There is preschool play structure that has one slide and two ramps. There is also a school-age play structure, a medium spinner a balance beam swing and large platform swing. There are other areas for climbing. There is a great merry-go-round that has ropes for climbing up. This is s hard to describe but it is really great piece of playground equipment. Renfrew Park Playground–Renfrew 811 Radford Road N.E. Beside the Renfrew Community Association – NOT the athletic park. This playground has a large play structure, but the best part of the playground are all of the ground level play activities that provide great vestibular motion.  This is an accessible swing, a 4 person see-saw, a 2 person airplane rocker, and a tea cup spinner.  You can see great pictures and get more information about the playground by visiting Calgary Playground Review.

Calgary Rotary Challenger Park— 3688 48 Ave. N.E. (access from 48 Ave.).  This Landscape Structures playground includes a roller slide, a Sway Fun, accessible play panels, an accessible swing, and other easily accessible items for gross motor play.  You can see pictures and get more information about the playground by visiting Calgary Playground Review.

Nellie Breen Playground–Inglewood – 14th St and St. Monica Ave SE  The ground floor of this playground is completely accessible. Although there is nothing that could be directly accessed from a wheelchair, you could get right up to the play on all items except for the tall play structure. There are also many items that could be accessed by people who could be transfered or just had low motor skills. There are many things that swing, spin or bounce for children who benefit from those types of vestibular motion. The Adirondack chairs also provide seating for people who might need some back support. The large school-aged climber has stairs so older children with low motor skills could still get to the top. Cambrian Heights Park Playground–Cambrian Heights – 240 Cardiff Dr. NW. (just east of Northmount Dr.)  This park has a huge level of variety and things not found at many other parks. A large school-age play structure with 2 slides; 3 large saucer swings; gong and chimes (missing mallet); store panel for imaginative play; merry-go-round climber; medium spinner; bowl spinner; and a big ring spinner. Great ground access throughout the play area. A few things could be accessed from a wheel chair and more could be enjoyed by someone who had a support person and could transfer. Mayfair Playground–Malibou Rd & Medford Pl. SW.  This playground features school-aged climber with ramp, slide, mountain climber, overhead steering wheel spinners, climbing wall, tall spinner; toddler climber with a house/jeep theme with slide and climbing ramp; 3 swings (1 baby, 1 saucer); large ring spinner; dinosaur climber; large snail spinner; bowl spinner; and chimes with two hammers.  You can see pictures of the playground as well as read a review from Calgary Playground Review.

Haultain Park Playground–Downtown – 225 13 Ave. S.W. (also known at 13 Ave Park)  The playground features preschool climber with a old west theme, slide, and bridges; school-aged climber with ramps, slides, flying fox and standing spinner; small merry-go-round spinner; saucer swing, regular swing and baby swing.  The school-aged climber has ramps that go up 3 levels with panels, a canopy and room to turn around at each level. There is also a musical panel on the ground level. The preschool climber would have room for a wheelchair to move around at the ground level. There is a saucer swing and a small merry-go-round spinner that could be used by people who were able to be transferred. St. Andrews Heights Community Playground–St. Andrews Heights. 2634 12 Ave NW  The playground features a large climbing structure with slide, ramps, rock wall, and ladder bridge; dinosaur climber; climbing wall; 4 seater wobbler; 2 bowl spinners; 4 swings (2 baby).You can get right up into the play in a wheelchair and a few places you can go under and through. There are two ramps to the first level of the play structure so you can ride around in a loop. There are swings and a couple of bowl spinners for kids who benefit from vestibular motion. Valleyview Park Spray Park and PlaygroundsDover- 28 St and 30 Ave SE This playground includes multiple spray park features. The spray park is completely wheelchair accessible as long as you don’t mind it getting wet! This water park is set up really well for little kids. There are a lot of small sprays on the edges of the splash pad and the larger sprayers don’t do anything unexpected. One of the best things is the whole area is fenced with 2 latchable gates along with the preschool playground so younger kids can have a lot of safe freedom. Valley Ridge Meadow Playground–Valley Ridge – 152 Valley Meadow Close NW This playground offers a school-aged climber with ramp, 2 slides, rock wall climber, spinner, rope bridge and musical panel; preschool climber with slide; 4 swings (2 baby); 4 seater bench bouncer; bowl spinner. There entire play area has accessible flooring. There is a ramp on the school-aged climber with tic-tac-toe at the top. There is also a musical panel underneath the the climber that could be accessed from a wheelchair. There are a couple of spinners and a large bouncer that would be great kids who benefit from vestibular motion. Airdrie

Chinook Winds Playground— – Chinook Winds Regional Park.  This playground features preschool structure with steering wheel and double slide; school-age structure with slide and climbing wall; wave balance beam; 2 bowl spinners; tri-motorcycle bouncer; 4 swings (2 saucer swings); 2 stand spinners; large ring spinner; surf board. The ground floor of this playground is completely accessible. Although there is nothing that could be directly accessed from a wheelchair, you could get right up to the play on all items. There are also many items that could be accessed by people who could be transferred or just had low motor skills. There are many things that swing, spin or bounce for children who benefit from those types of vestibular motion. Red Deer

Parkland School–6016 45th Avenue.  This sprawling inclusive playground has an extensive ramping system, lots of play panels, slides and climbers. The Sway Fun® glider, the first wheelchair-accessible glider, invites up to two children using wheelchairs to interact with their able-bodied peers. The playground equipment comes from Landscape Structures Inc and was designed by Habitat Systems Inc.

Spruce Grove

Rotary Playscape–Located at the West District Sports Park and TransAlta Tri-Leisure Centre, 211 Campsite Road.  This playground has something to meet the play needs of everyone! For children 2-12+ the playground includes equipment from Landscape Structures Inc, including a customized stage, Evos™ playsystem and Mobius® climber, Spacenet™ climber, Natural Elements™ climbers and PlayBooster® playstructures. There’s also HealthBeat™ Outdoor Fitness Equipment for the adults. The playground was designed and built by Habitat Systems Inc.
